Bug description:
  == Comment: #0 - Carsten Jacobi  - 2017-03-07 03:35:31 ==
I'm evaluating Ubuntu-Xenial on z for development purposes, the test system
is installed in an LPAR with one FCP-LUN which is accessable by 4 pathes (all
pathes are configured).
The system hangs regularly when I make packages with "pdebuild" using the
pbuilder packaging suit.
The local Linux development team helped me out with a pre-analysis that I can
post here (thanks a lot for that):

With the default settings and under a certain workload,
blk_mq seems to get into a presumed "deadlock".
Possibly this happens on CPU hot(un)plug.

After the I/O stalled, a dump was pulled manually.
The following information is from the crash dump pre-analysis.

  $ zgetdump -i dump.0
  General dump info:
Dump format: elf
Version: 1
UTS node name..: mclint
UTS kernel release.: 4.4.0-65-generic

  Memory map:
 - 0001b831afff (7043 MB)
0001b831b000 - 0001 (1149 MB)

Things look similarly with HWE kernel ubuntu16.04-4.8.0-34.36~16.04.1.

So both dm-mpath and sd have requests pending in their block multiqueue.
The large numbers of sd look strange and seem to be the unsigned formatting
of the values shown for async multiplied by -1.

Bug description:
This a parallel to bug 1477455 regarding update-manager and a full
  /boot partition.

  [Impact]
ubuntu-release-upgrader provides generic instructions if a system being
upgrade is calculated to not have enough free space for the upgrade to succeed.
The instructions include using apt clean and emptying trash. This message won't
help if you have a separate boot partition that is low on free space though.

  [Test Case]
  1) Create a file to be used as a /boot partition (dd if=/dev/zero
of=fake-boot bs=1024 count=204800)
  2) mkfs -t ext3 fake-boot
  3) copy your real /boot somewhere
  4) sudo mount -t ext3 fake-boot /boot
  5) copy the files from step 3 to /boot
  6) fill up /boot so there is less 30MB free space
  7) run 'do-release-upgrade -p' (-p is for proposed)

With the current version of ubuntu-release-upgrader you'll see an
error message with instructions to "empty your trash and remove
temporary packages." With the version of ubuntu-release-upgrader in
-proposed you'll receive a message regarding using "sudo apt
  autoremove".

  [Regression Potential]
We are just changing the strings used in the error message, which will
introduce untranslated strings but that is better than leaving people with
systems that cannot update.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1722579] [NEW] xgene nic unresponsive after ifdown/ifup

2017-10-10 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Sean Feole discovered that if you ifdown/ifup the NIC on an X-Gene 2 system,
the NIC does not come back online. While the interface is reported as up, you
cannot ping the system. In addition to the obvious problems this causes for a
sysadmin, it also breaks software that does this automatically, such as juju
when it sets up a host bridge.

[Test Case]
Boot an X-Gene 2 system, and start pinging it from a remote system. Assuming
the pinged interface is eth0, run:

$ sudo ifdown eth0; sudo ifup eth0

System will cease responding to pings.

[Regression Risk]

Bug description:
  [IMPACT]
There is a requirement for Common Criteria EAL2 certification that changes to
the system's hardware clock be audited/monitored. In Ubuntu the hwclock command
can be used to alter the system's hardware clock. Thus this event needs to be
audited for EAL2. The hwclock command within util-linux has the ability to
create an audit event when the system's hardware clock is altered, but this
ability is enabled via the --with-audit config option. This option is currently
not enabled.

Only the hwclock and the login commands within util-linux package use
this --with-audit config option to enable auditing. However, it
appears the login command is not built nor shipped in util-linux.
Ubuntu uses the login command from shadow instead. Thus, only hwclock
command would be affected by this change. The change would enable (1)
call to audit_open to create a netlink socket descritor. (2) generate
an audit entry when system hardware clock altered. The entry will be
logged into the /var/log/audit/audit.log IF auditd is installed and
  running.

  [TEST]

This has been tested on both P8 and amd64 architectures. With the
patch all the Common Criteria testcases pass for hwclock. Before this
patch, the functional part of the testcase passed, but the check for
the triggered audit records would fail. Attached the Common Criteria
  testcase below.

Also, the util-linux package has testcases that get run during the
build. All of these pass. Pointer to build log below.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
The regression potential for this should be small. This change does not take
away from any current functionality. It just adds the ability to generate an
audit entry when system hardware clock is altered.

Bug description:
  SRU:
  Impact:

In snapcraft.yaml, we use dpkg-parsechangelog (part of dpkg-dev) to
extract the debian version string from debian/changelog, but this tool
is not installed by default when doing a cleanbuild (build inside a
lxd container): fix it by making dpkg-dev an explicit build dep.

  Fix:

add dpkg-dev to the build-packages list (see attached patch)

  How to test it:

  $ git clone
git://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/xenial
  $ cd linux
  $ snapcraft cleanbuild

it will fail by saying that 'dpkg-parsechangelog is not installed',
then apply the attached patch and cleanbuild again, this time it will
  complete fine.

Title:
Kernel has troule recognizing Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Xenial:

Status in linux source package in Zesty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I recently bought a Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard, and while it works
well when successfully recognized by Ubuntu at boot, that doesn't
  always happen.

I see messages like this when booting my desktop up:

[6.619510] usb 3-10: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/all
  [6.619543] usb 3-10: can't read configurations, error -110

They sometimes repeat at 5-second intervals, culminating on a "can't
set config #1" message or even "unable to enumerate USB device". This
happens on the logic that deals with a new USB device being connected,
so when it doesn't work it never gets to the HID drivers part of the
code. When it does, hid-generic is quite able to control the keyboard,
though this message appears on dmesg:

[6.883811] usbhid 3-10:1.2: couldn't find an input interrupt
  endpoint

From what I have been able to determine, the Corsair Strafe RGB has three
inputs, with the last one being used as input/output and having something to do
with the LEDs. It only has a single USB configuration, though I don't know why
it times out.

Searching on Google has a lot of people recommending this userspace
drive to me: https://github.com/mattanger/ckb-next , and I've tried
it, but it seems to be more about programming lighting effects into
the keyboard than in controlling its basic operation, which is all I'm
interested in. Its daemon was supposed to handle that part too, but it
didn't fix those connection errors on boot.

I have the following boot parameter set in my kernel, following advice
from ckb-next's README, but it doesn't see to have an appreciable
  effect on my success rate:

  usbhid.quirks=0x1B1C:0x1B20:0x2448

  ckb-next recommended 0x2408, but I added the HID_QUIRK_MULTI_INPUT
as well in an attempt to improve things, without success.

GRUB is always able to correctly identify the keyboard and get it to
work, too, which makes the fact that the full kernel can't always do
  it a little more frustrating.

I would be happy to provide any extra information you require on this
  issue.

Support Dell Wireless DW5819/5818 WWAN devices

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Dell Wireless 5819/5818 devices are re-branded Sierra Wireless MC74 series
which will by default boot with vid 0x413c and pid's 0x81cf, 0x81d0,
0x81d1,0x81d2.

  [Fix]
This patch has already been submitted upstream, reviewed and applied by
linux-usb serial maintainer.
[PATCH] USB: serial: qcserial: add Dell DW5818, DW581
    (See: https://marc.info/?l=linux-usb=150703788328773=2)

However, to meet Dell Edge Gateway 300x delivery schedule, a sauce
patch is being submitted to Xenial SRU.

  [Regression Potential]
The patch adds USB VID's/PID's to the usb qcserial driver. Regression
potential is minimal.

  [Testing]
A test kernel (snap) with this patch was verified by the ODM, no issues were
reported.

This bug is used for tracking purposes, please do not triage.

Currently we have 6.4.10 in the Xenial kernel. The latest OpenNSL

Since the module doesn't load automatically, this update shouldn't
have any impact for people don't use the module.

For the module itself, it loads without problem on a test system.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
There is a USB Ethernet port, 0bda:8153, on Dell IE Docking.
After plugged in the docking, system hard hangs.

  [Fix]
This issue has been fix after v4.11-rc4, so after bisecting the kernel, we
found the first bad commit, and realized this issue is from Realtek USB
Ethernet driver with a non-initialized list.
98d068a r8152: fix the list rx_done may be used without initialization

  [Test Case]
Verified on the Dell XPS and IE docking, and confirm this patch works.

  [Regression Potential]
It's a one line patch and do the initialization of the list variable, there
should be no any regression would be resulted from this.

mdadm segfault error 4 in libc-2.23.so

Bug description:
  [impact]

the mdadm cron jobs invoke mdadm to scan raid arrays periodically, but
when inside a unpriviledged container mdadm does not have access to
the arrays, and it segfaults when invoked. This is logged in the host
system's logs, and while harmless, causes confusion about mdadm
  segfaults in the host logs.

  [test case]

install a ubuntu system and create one or more raid/mdadm arrays.
create a container, with either trusty or xenial inside the container.
in the container, install mdadm. Run:

  $ mdadm --monitor --scan --oneshot

that is the command run by mdadm's cronjob (though other variations on
the command will also segfault). With the current mdadm code, mdadm
will segfault. With the patched code, mdadm exits normally.

  [regression potential]

this patch changes mdadm's code that processes each array's name; a
bug in this area may cause mdadm to fail when performing any operation
on arrays, but not during the operation, the failure would occur
  before mdadm opened the array.

  [other info]

this commit fixing this is already upstream and included in zesty and
later; this is required only for trusty and xenial.

  [original description]

On Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Xenial, mdadm segfaults every day on two machines.
Everything works as normal though, and the RAID arrays are not degraded.

The segfault message always appears twice in quick succession.

It seems to be triggered by /etc/cron.daily/mdadm which essentially runs
  mdadm --monitor --scan --oneshot

As such, the frequency is around every 85000 seconds or 24 hours give
or take, depending on when the cron job was executed.

It does not happen when running the command manually.

There is one similar bug #1576055 concerning libc and a few cases
elsewhere but further digging into this has yet to reveal anything
  conclusive.

Note that these machines have almost exactly the same hardware (Xeon
D-1518, 16GB ECC), so hardware design flaws cannot be ruled out.
However, memory testing has not turned up any faults. That said, I
know some segfaults can be difficult to find even when they are
  hardware issues.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1722491] [NEW] improve mdadm imsm integration with systemd

2017-10-10 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * In xenial, mdadm-waitclean is an init.d script, and it appears that
it doesn't not run late enough. In later releases a systemd-shutdown
script is shipped instead. Which results in wait-clean action executed
later in the shutdown cycle, having more chances to complete the
shutdown with clean/synced RAID array state.

 * In xenial, there is no default shutdown initramfs, and therefore
mdmon processes are killed before the Intel Matrix RAID / DFF external
metadata RAID arrays are stopped. This leads to a full resync upon next
assembly. One options is to implement a shutdown initramfs, another
solution is to not takeover mdmon process from the initramfs. This will
result in holding up initramfs memory throughout the lifetime of the
system, however the net effect should be clean raid array shutdowns
which will mitigate excessive resyncs.

[Bugfix]
Backport mdadm.shutdown systemd-shutdown script to xenial

[Test Case]

 * Switch logging to console, and make it verbose LogLevel=debug
LogTarget=console. Perform shutdown and observe that mdadm.shutdown is executed
during shutdown.
 * Check that the system boots with a clean raid-array state.

[Regression Potential]

 * On systems that have rootfs on the Intel Matrix / DDF raid (external
metadata mdadm raid, i.e. NOT the generic linux raid) initramfs will result in
being held up through the lifetime of the boot thus using more steady state
RAM. This only affects systems that use Intel Matrix / DDF controllers, and are
typically bare-metal servers.
 * additional wait-clean shutdown script is quick but has an impact on
shutdown.target speed / time to shutdown or reboot.

[Other Info]

 * Later releases do not use sysv-init script thus this not a direct backport
of code from later releases

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1722481] [NEW] systemd should sync disks, before killing all processes on shutdown

2017-10-10 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * systemd-shutdown binary is executed to complete system shutdown. In
xenial, it calls sync() after killing all processes, and not before
killing them. This means that processes are racing the SIGKILL/TERM
timeouts to sync all IO to disk. To mitigate this race condition, and
make the shutdown process more reliable the sync() should also happen
before process killing spree starts.

[Fix]
Backport upstream commit
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/2e79d1828a8da9b3af1b052297e3617905ec94f3

[Test Case]

 * Make sure systems still shuts down, including e.g. root on raid.

[Regression Potential]

 * Shutdowns may appear to be slower due to two sync() calls instead of one
 * However total shutdown time should not be impacted much, as there really
should not be much additional IO caused by killing all processes.

Title:
Neighbour confirmation broken, breaks ARP cache aging

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed
Status in linux source package in Zesty:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
A host can lose access to another host whose MAC address changes if they have
active connections to other hosts that share a route. The ARP cache does not
time out as expected - instead the old MAC address is continuously reconfirmed.

  [Fix]
Apply series [1], which changes the algorithm for neighbour confirmation.
  That is, from upstream:
51ce8bd4d17a net: pending_confirm is not used anymore
0dec879f636f net: use dst_confirm_neigh for UDP, RAW, ICMP, L2TP
  63fca65d0863 net: add confirm_neigh method to dst_ops
  c3a2e8370534 tcp: replace dst_confirm with sk_dst_confirm
  c86a773c7802 sctp: add dst_pending_confirm flag
4ff0620354f2 net: add dst_pending_confirm flag to skbuff
  9b8805a32559 sock: add sk_dst_pending_confirm flag

  [Test case]
Create 3 real or virtual systems, all hooked up to a switch.
One system needs an active-backup bond with fail_over_mac=1 num_grat_arp=0.

Put all the systems in the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.200.0/24

Call the system with the bond A, and the other two systems B and C.

On B, run in 3 shells:
   - netperf -t TCP_RR to C
   - ping -f A
   - watch 'ip -s neigh show 192.168.200.0/24'

On A, cause the bond to fail over.

  Observe that:

   - without the patches, B intermittently fails to notice the change in
A's MAC address. This presents as the ping failing and not recovering,
and the arp table showing the old mac address never timing out and
never being replace with a new mac address.

   - with the patches, the arp cache times out and B sends another mac
probe and detects A's new address.

It helps to use taskset to put ping and netperf on the same CPU, or
  use single-CPU vms.

  See [2] for more details.

Bug description:
Middle button doesn't work on several Thinkpad laptops like E570,
  E475, E470, E575 and X1Carbon.

When middle button fails to work, logs show:
psmouse serio2: trackpoint: failed to get extended button data

It fails to read out ext button info via PS2 command.
Almost all the Thinkpad have 3 buttons, so set it to 3 button when it fails
to read button info.

And on Lenovo X1, there is a new version of trackpoint, add this ID
  for this new device.
