[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1444992] Re: fastpath install duplicates iSCSI initiator names, blocking iSCSI HW

2017-11-03 Thread Andres Rodriguez
We believe this is no longer an issue in the latest releases of MAAS.
Please upgrade to the latest version of MAAS, and If you believe this
issue is still present, please re-open this bug report or file a new
one.

fastpath install duplicates iSCSI initiator names, blocking iSCSI HW

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  * All Xenial cloud images currently share a fixed iSCSI Initiator Name
  by default when booted.

  * The Initiator Name is intended to be a globally unique identifier of
  a given initiator.

  [Test Case]

  * Start two instances (LXD, VMs) using cloud images built using the current
livecd-rootfs.
- Both instances will have the same InitiatorName in
/etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi.

  * Start two instances (LXD, VMs) using cloud images built using an updated
livecd-rootfs.
- The two instances should have distinct InitiatorName values in
/etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi.

  * Alternatively, the resulting cloud image from using the old and new
livecd-rootfs can be compared. In the older case,
/etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi will contain a iqn value. In the fixed
case, the file will container "Generate=yes".

  [Regression Potential]

  * It is currently an error that all cloud images of a given version
share the same initiator name. (Even mentioned in the file in
  question!)

  * The likelihood of this regressing any real world iSCSI deployments
  is very low.

  * I imagine the primary source of regressions would be end-
users/sysadmins already working around the broken iSCSI behavior in
16.04 by manually rewriting this file. If they rely on detecting the
fixed Debian initiatornname to do so, that detection will be broken.
However, since in those cases, the initiator name is being generated
at boot, that should be sufficient.

  * Note that this does not solve the known issue for iSCSI that if a
snapshot of a booted image is used to launch more instances, they will
  share iSCSI initiator names.

  ---

When using fastpath install, each host is given an identical iSCSI
initiator name. This does not happen with Debian install mode. The
result is HW SANs that use iSCSI get confused. This is an actual
  customer/partner issue at present.

It would appear to be fallout of the image based approach to installation.
The /etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi file contains something like:
   ## DO NOT EDIT OR REMOVE THIS FILE!
   ## If you remove this file, the iSCSI daemon will not start.
   ## If you change the InitiatorName, existing access control lists
   ## may reject this initiator. The InitiatorName must be unique
   ## for each iSCSI initiator. Do NOT duplicate iSCSI InitiatorNames.
   InitiatorName=iqn.1993-08.org.debian:01:dcafddf1c8b

That is what gets used as the initiator, and is seemingly generated at
package-install time. It needs to be re-created
  uniquely per installed host.

Bug description:
This bug has some history that may be confusing from the comments.
Basically it started out as a Feature Freeze Exception, that's why we
have build logs, git logs and unit test runs attached.

Also, the "rename" that is mentioned elsewhere did not happen with
this package: the ubuntu-advantage name was kept, no new aliases were
added. This will happen in a later SRU, with a later version of the
  package.

I uploaded new tarballs and debdiff with these changes from what was here
before, just in case you, the reader, have looked at the previous description:
  * tarball with correct directory entry. The previous one had "v10" instead of
"10" as the base version
  * updated most recent changelog entry, just saying this is a backport of
version 10. No need to say it has fips support, which neglected to mention the
livepatch support. All that is in the previous d/changelog entries

PPA with built packages for t, x and z:
  https://launchpad.net/~ahasenack/+archive/ubuntu/ua-tools-sru-1719671
  (ppa:ahasenack/ua-tools-sru-1719671 - no ~ppaN suffix, sorry)

  [IMPACT]
Most recent version of ubuntu-advantage-tool on github includes fips and
livepatch enablement. The fips enablement will allow customers to easily
install and configure Canonical's FIPS certified modules on xenial, whereas
livepatch allows xenial and trusty customers to patch the running kernel
without a reboot.

This SRU will cover both new features.

In addition to the new features themselves, a new "status" command was
added that will give a short summary about the available modules and
  their status, at a glance.

Note: FIPS certified modules are only available for xenial. Livepatch
is supported on xenial and trusty. The tool will refuse to enable
either service on an unsupported ubuntu release.

Without this updated package, customers of those services have to
enable them manually by following a series of steps.

  [FIPS DESCRIPTION]
When "ubuntu-advantage enable-fips " is issued from commandline,

   - configure the private PPA where the FIPS modules are located
   - install the FIPS modules from this PPA to the local machine from where the
script is run
   - configure the bootloader to enable fips

Upon successful completion of these steps, the customer then gets a message
stating to reboot
the machine to complete the fips enablement process.

Without the script, customers must perform the steps manually.

  [LIVEPATCH DESCRIPTION]
Livepatch allows customers to apply kernel patches to a running system
without rebooting it.

The current instructions live in http://ubuntu.com/livepatch and boil down to:
  - install snapd if it's not installed already. On trusty this means a new
kernel as well.
  - install the canonical-livepatch snap
  - obtain a livepatch token from Canonical
  - run the enable command with the given token

The ubuntu-advantage-tools package simplifies this process by just
requesting the token and performing all the other steps on behalf of
the user. It also conveniently checks the running kernel and instructs
the user to reboot into a newer kernel if needed to finish the
installation (this is the case when running trusty).

  [FIX]

Add fips and livepatch support to the ubuntu-adadvantage-tools
  package. See debdiff below.

  [LIVEPATCH TESTCASES]

  TRUSTY
  0. Install the new ubuntu-advantage-tools package to add livepatch support.

  1. Collect status before enabling livepatch

  type on commandline:
  ubuntu-advantage status

  expect:
  livepatch: disabled

  esm: disabled (not available)

  fips: disabled (not available)

  2. Enable livepatch

visit https://ubuntu.com/livepatch and obtain a token

  type on commandline,
  sudo ubuntu-advantage enable-livepatch

You may be required to install a newer kernel. In that case, expect the
  following output:
   Installing missing dependency snapd... OK
   Installing the canonical-livepatch snap.
This may take a few minutes depending on your

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
This issue is reproducible on two different nodes in our testpool,
fozzie and rizzo, both with 4.4.0-98-generic amd64.

On a clean install system with a scratch drive sdb available.

  Steps:
  1. sudo parted /dev/sdb mklabel -s gpt
  2. sudo parted /dev/sdb mkpart -s p1 xfs 1MiB 2MiB
  3. sudo parted /dev/sdb mkpart -s p2 xfs 20001MiB 4MiB
  4. sudo mkfs.xfs -f /dev/sdb1
  5. sudo mkfs.xfs -f /dev/sdb2

  Result:
mkfs.xfs: cannot open /dev/sdb2: Device or resource busy

In my test case, there are 5 partitions from sdb1 to sdb5, only sdb2 will
fail with this. And this happens on both nodes.

Some NVMe operations time out too quickly. The module parameters allow the
timeouts to be extended, but only up to 255s, as the counters are bytes.

The underlying parameters are unsigned ints, so make the module parameters
unsigned ints too, by picking patch

Very limited: only types of module parameters are changing, the patch is

Bug description:
  [Impact]

compute-image-packages is provided by Google for installation within
guests that run on Google Compute Engine. It is a collection of tools
and daemons, packaged as gce-compute-image-packages, that ensure that
the Ubuntu images published to GCE run properly on their platform.

Cloud platforms evolve at a rate that can't be handled in six-month
increments, and they will often develop features that they would like
to be available to customers who don't want to upgrade from earlier
Ubuntu releases. As such, updating gce-compute-image-packages to more
recent upstream releases is required within all Ubuntu releases, so
they continue to function properly in their environment.

With this release we also add a new binary package to the suite -
google-compute-engine-oslogin which is for a future feature of using
OS Login on GCE VM instances.

  [Test Case]

When a new version of gce-compute-image-packages is uploaded to
-proposed, the following will be done:

   * an image based on -proposed will be built for GCE and published to the
ubuntu-os-cloud-devel project
   * the CPC team will write new automated tests to cover new testable
functionality (if any) in the new package
   * the automated testing that the CPC team normally runs against GCE images
before they are published will be run against the -proposed image
   * the GCE team will be asked to validate that the new package addresses the
issues it is expected to address, and that the image passes their internal
image validation.

If all the testing indicates that the image containing the new package
is acceptable, verification will be considered to be done.

  [Other Information]

This bug is used for tracking of releasing the new upstream version
for all supported series, as per the approved policy mentioned in the
  following MRE:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/gce-compute-image-packages-Updates
