[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1797209] Re: do-release-upgrade should block release upgrades in some circumstances
This bug was fixed in the package ubuntu-release-upgrader - 1:18.10.11 --- ubuntu-release-upgrader (1:18.10.11) cosmic; urgency=medium * do-release-upgrade: do not run the release upgrade if either not all updates are installed or a reboot is required due to a libc6 upgrade. (LP: #1797209) * debian/control: change ubuntu-release-upgrader-core to depend on ca-certificates (LP: #1796940) * Update of demotions and mirrors data. -- Brian Murray Wed, 10 Oct 2018 14:10:29 -0700 ** Changed in: ubuntu-release-upgrader (Ubuntu Cosmic) Status: In Progress => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of नेपाली भाषा समायोजकहरुको समूह, which is subscribed to Xenial. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1797209 Title: do-release-upgrade should block release upgrades in some circumstances Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Xenial: New Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Bionic: New Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Cosmic: Fix Released Bug description: Impact -- do-release-upgrade will allow people to upgrade to a new release of Ubuntu even if they have outstanding updates to install or need to reboot from a libc6 upgrade. This behavior is different than that of update-manager which forces you to install all updates or reboot before upgrading. Additionally, this specifically allows users to upgrade without receiving fixes that would improve the upgrade process e.g. bug 1780996. Test Case for missing updates - 1) Install Ubuntu 18.04 and don't install updates. 2) Modify /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades so Prompt=normal 3) Run 'do-release-upgrade -d' With the current version of ubuntu-release-upgrader-core you'll be able to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10, with the version from -proposed you'll receive a message saying "Please install all available updates for your release before upgrading." Test Case for libc6 update -- 1) Install Ubuntu 18.04 2) Modify /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades so Prompt=normal 3) Run 'sudo apt-get install --reinstall libc6' 4) Run 'do-release-upgrade -d' With the current version of ubuntu-release-upgrader-core you'll be able to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.10, with the version from -proposed you'll receive a message saying "You have not rebooted after a previous libc6 update. Please reboot before upgrading." Regression Potential The strings are not translated but that seems better than people having a bad outcome when upgrading. It's also worth noting that /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/release-upgrade-motd calls /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release to write a stamp file which contains information about the availability of a release upgrade. The behavior of check-new-release should be the same i.e. it should say a new release is available and not mention the need to install updates or reboot. This can be tested by running '/usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release -qcd'. The output should contain "New release ... available ... use do-release-upgrade". [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1396654] Re: C++ demangling support missing from perf
I was wrong. `/usr/bin/perf` is just a shell script calling a kernel specific version. The real executable is in `linux-hwe-tools-4.**`. I checked the source of `linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36` and it already has the necessary fix. Rebuilding just the perf executable from withhin the source dir resulted in a binary with correct demangling support. ``` apt-get source linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36 sudo apt-get build-dep linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36 cd linux-hwe-4.15.0/tools/perf && make ``` However rebuilding and installing the package `linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36` resulted in a different binary with still broken demangling. I don’t know what’s the reason for that. ``` apt-get source linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36 sudo apt-get build-dep linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36 cd linux-hwe-4.15.0 && debuild -us -uc -b sudo dpkg -i ../linux-hwe-tools-4.15.0-36_4.15.0-36.39~16.04.1_amd64.deb ../linux-tools-4.15.0-36-generic_4.15.0-36.39~16.04.1_amd64.deb ``` ** Also affects: linux-hwe (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** No longer affects: linux-meta-hwe (Ubuntu) ** No longer affects: linux-meta-hwe (Ubuntu Xenial) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of नेपाली भाषा समायोजकहरुको समूह, which is subscribed to Xenial. This causes two threads doing a decrement of pages to race with each other seeing the op->refcount <= 0 at same time, and end up calling fscache_op_complete in both the threads leading to the OOPS. [Fix] The fix is trivial to use atomic_sub_return instead of two calls. [Testcase] I believe the user has tested the patch successfully on their fscache/cachefiles setup. [Regression Potential] Limited to fscache. Small, comprehensible change. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1793464] Re: Kernel panic after the ubuntu_nbd_smoke_test on Xenial kernel

There are two upstream fixes required as this is actually two issues in one. One fix is to not to shutdown the sock when IRQs are disable and a second to fix is to race in the nbd ioctl. == Fix == Upstream commits: 23272a6754b81ff6503e09c743bb4ceeeab39997 nbd: Remove signal usage 1f7b5cf1be4351e60cf8ae7aab976503dd73c5f8 nbd: Timeouts are not user requested disconnects 0e4f0f6f63d3416a9e529d99febfe98545427b81 nbd: Cleanup reset of nbd and bdev after a disconnect c261189862c6f65117eb3b1748622a08ef49c262 nbd: don't shutdown sock with irq's disabled 97240963eb308d8d21a89c0459822f7ea98463b4 nbd: fix race in ioctl The first 3 patches are prerequisites required for the latter two fixes to apply and work correctly. Most of these backports are minor patch wiggles required because later patches have been applied to the driver in earlier fixes to this driver. == Regression Potential == These fixes just touch nbd, so the regression potential is just limited to this. Secondly, we are pulling in upstream fixes that exist in Bionic and Cosmic kernels, so these are tried and tested fixes. == Test Case == 1. Deploy a node with 4.4 Xenial 2. Run the ubuntu_nbd_smoke_test Without the fix, we get hang/crashes. With the fix one can run this test multiple times without any issues at all. This issue can be reproduced on AMD64 KVM //bare-metal node, s390x zKVM node The test itself will pass, but the system will hang after a few second. Steps: 1. Deploy a node with 4.4 Xenial 2. Run the ubuntu_nbd_smoke_test If you have access to the console, you will see that this system actually bumped into a kernel panic: Unable to handle kernel pointer dereference in virtual kernel address space failing address: 03ff802c1000 TEID: 03ff802c1803 Fault in home space mode while using kernel ASCE.
