[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1798770] [NEW] Xenial update: 4.4.160 upstream stable release

2018-10-19 Thread Stefan Bader
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

   4.4.160 upstream stable release
   from git://git.kernel.org/

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1780109] Re: Only Recommend rsyslog | system-log-daemon

2018-10-19 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello Balint, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gce-compute-image-packages into trusty-proposed. The package
will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gce-compute-image-packages/20180905+dfsg1-0ubuntu1~14.04.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-trusty to verification-done-trusty. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-trusty. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * gce-compute-image-packages depends on rsyslog | system-log-daemon
  while there is need for images where none of those dependencies are
  present.

   * The upload demotes the dependencies to Recommends

  [Test Case]

   * This is seen when the package is fixed:
  $ apt show gce-compute-image-packages | grep rsyslog

  WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in
  scripts.

  Recommends: google-cloud-sdk, rsyslog | system-log-daemo

   * google-cloud-sdk is recommended only on Xenial and Trusty

  [Regression Potential]

   * Since by default recommended packages are installed with the
  packages recommending them the change should not cause issues in image
  generation nor during package upgrades. When an image build process
  uses apt's --no-install-recommends option, that would result rsyslog
  missing from the image.

  oslogin fails on Xenial and Trusty.

  In auth.log we see:

  Oct 17 16:35:59 davecore-oslogin sshd[10073]: PAM unable to
dlopen(pam_oslogin_login.so): /lib/security/pam_oslogin_login.so: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

pam_oslogin_login.so
  Oct 17 16:35:59 davecore-oslogin sshd[10073]: PAM unable to
dlopen(pam_oslogin_admin.so): /lib/security/pam_oslogin_admin.so: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
  Oct 17 16:35:59 davecore-oslogin sshd[10073]: PAM adding faulty module:
pam_oslogin_admin.so

  The error message is a bit deceptive - PAM tries to load the module
  from the correct location, fails, and then tries the other location
  where it is missing. It then reports the missing error rather than the
  real error.

  symlink the module into both paths leads to a much more useful error
  message:

  Oct 18 06:45:12 dja-202158 sshd[16554]: PAM unable to

  [Test case]
   - set up GCE VM
   - turn on oslogin
   - attempt to log in

  [Fix]

debian/patches/0002-Set-LDFLAGS-at-the-end-of-the-c-command-line-right-b.patch
re-orders the link flags to link boost_regex for oslogin. However, this didn't
change the flags for PAM module linking. So fix that too.

  [Regression Potential]
  - fixes a regression
  - limited to oslogin, and how it is linked.

  [Other Notes]
  We still see a scary list of warnings when building, but they don't seem to
have an impact on the common path:
  dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: symbol _ZN5boost9re_detail13put_mem_blockEPv used by
debian/google-compute-engine-oslogin/lib/libnss_google-compute-engine-oslogin-1.3.1.so
 found in none of the libraries

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1798706] Re: Incomplete linking with boost_regex

2018-10-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gce-compute-image-packages -
20180905+dfsg1-0ubuntu1~14.04.1

---
gce-compute-image-packages (20180905+dfsg1-0ubuntu1~14.04.1) trusty;
urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/set-LDFLAGS-for-PAM.patch: Fix missing symbols
when using oslogin due to misording of the boost regex library
in linking the PAM modules. (LP: #1798706)

gce-compute-image-packages (20180905+dfsg1-0ubuntu1~14.04.0) trusty;
urgency=medium

  * Backport to Trusty
- Revert ordering shutdown scripts after snapd.service.
- Revert adding /snap/bin to PATH for startup/shutdown scripts
- Revert to using dh-systemd because Xenial does not have the debhelper
  * Revert "Build depend on debhelper (>= 9.20160709) instead of on dh-systemd"
This reverts commit 1afdbde3f27ab4d1712b1a0d4cc14df3a0528bdc.
Xenial does not have that debhelper version thus dh-systemd is needed there.
  * Build-depend on libboost-regex-dev for regex support
  * Choose std:: or boost:: regex based on support for C++11
  * Set LDFLAGS at the end of the the c++ command line right before libs.
This fixes passig additional libs to make, namely -lboost_regex
  * Link with boost for regex support
  * Free tests from C++11 constructs to let them being compiled without C++11
support

gce-compute-image-packages (20180905+dfsg1-0ubuntu1) cosmic;
urgency=medium

  [ Balint Reczey ]
  * New upstream version 20180905+dfsg1 (LP: #1792466)
- Restart the network daemon if networking is restarted.
- Prevent setup of the default ethernet interface.
- Accounts daemon can now verify username is 32 characters or less.
- Prevent IP forwarding daemon log spam.
- Make default shell configurable when executing metadata scripts.
- Rename distro directory to distro_lib.
  * debian/control: Update Vcs-* fields to point to the new packaging repository
  * Update shared library symlinks
  * Drop 0001-Adjust-tests-to-changed-LoadJsonArrayToCache-behavio.patch,
it is integrated upstream
  * Build depend on debhelper (>= 9.20160709) instead of on dh-systemd
to keep Lintian happy.

  [ Google Cloud Team ]
  * Remove NTP dependency from packaging

gce-compute-image-packages (20180510+dfsg1-0ubuntu5) cosmic;
urgency=medium

  * Depend on the same version of google-compute-engine-oslogin
  * Only Recommend rsyslog | system-log-daemon (LP: #1780109)

gce-compute-image-packages (20180510+dfsg1-0ubuntu4) cosmic;
urgency=medium

  * debian/patches/0004-order-shutdown-scripts-after-snapd.patch: Order
shutdown scripts after snapd.service.
  * debian/patches/0005-add-snap-bin-to-path.patch: Add /snap/bin to
PATH for startup/shutdown scripts.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  compute-image-packages is provided by Google for installation within
  guests that run on Google Compute Engine. It is a collection of tools
  and daemons, packaged as gce-compute-image-packages, that ensure that
  the Ubuntu images published to GCE run properly on their platform.

  Cloud platforms evolve at a rate that can't be handled in six-month
  increments, and they will often develop features that they would like
  to be available to customers who don't want to upgrade from earlier
  Ubuntu releases. As such, updating gce-compute-image-packages to more
  recent upstream releases is required within all Ubuntu releases, so
  they continue to function properly in their environment.

  With this release we also add a new binary package to the suite -
  google-compute-engine-oslogin which is for a future feature of using
  OS Login on GCE VM instances.

  In the SRU for Trusty the maintainer scripts removed manual handling
  of systemd services because systemd can be present on Trusty systemd
  due to recent changes.

  In the Trusty SRU the maintainer scripts are also changed to
  start/restart the shipped upstart jobs and also running
  google_instance_setup.

  [Test Case]

  When a new version of gce-compute-image-packages is uploaded to
  -proposed, the following will be done:

   * an image based on -proposed will be built for GCE and published to the
ubuntu-os-cloud-devel project
   * the CPC team will

   * gce-compute-image-packages depends on rsyslog | system-log-daemon
  while there is need for images where none of those dependencies are
  present.

   * The upload demotes the dependencies to Recommends

  [Test Case]

   * This is seen when the package is fixed:
  $ apt show gce-compute-image-packages | grep rsyslog

  To reproduce the issue:

  1. Install any kernel starting on 4.15.0-22 or above
  2. Boot the machine with the new kernel
  3. ping the gateway (pings are in the sub 1ms range)
  4. Attempt to do things that use the network, i.e. apt update or scp, etc. It
may take a minute or so before things get hung, i.e. you will see apt update
progress stop and the transfer rate drop down to just a few kb/s or simply say
stalled.
  4. Now ping the gateway again and you will see 1-5s pings, dropped packets
  5. At this point network is no longer usable

Bug description:
  === Begin SRU Template ===
  [Impact]
  The 16.10 kernel dropped a legacy kernel module alias that allowed usage of
  the 'overlay' filesystem via name 'overlayfs'. This broke overlayroot as
  it explicitly tried to to use 'overlayfs' by name in loading of modules and
  also in entry in /etc/fstab.

  Without this fix, overlayroot will simply not work on any upstream kernel
  or Ubuntu kernel of 16.10 (yakkety) or later.

  [Test Case]
  Note, not applying proposed as shown in step 3 below will recreate failure.

  1.) Start an instance of a cloud image.

  2.) get a suitable 4.8 kernel
  On 16.10 or later, this is already done. On 16.04, we currently need to
  install the kernel team's PPA to get one.

  $ sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa
  $ sudo apt update -q && sudo apt install -y linux-virtual-hwe-16.04-edge
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu $rel-proposed main" |
  $ sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/proposed.list
  $ sudo apt update -qy && sudo apt install -qy overlayroot http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-initramfs-tools/cloud-initramfs-tools/trunk/view/head:/overlayroot/scripts/init-bottom/overlayroot
  [2]
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-initramfs-tools/cloud-initramfs-tools/trunk/revision/115

  === End SRU Template ===

  As mentioned in LP: #1411294, it's now called 'overlay' instead of
'overlayfs'.
  Ubuntu had patched the kernel for compatibility.

  The Ubuntu kernels as of 4.8 (16.10 kernel) and possibly a bit before
  no longer have a overlayfs module either. Thus, this is now affecting
  yakkety.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1786139] Re: [GLK/CLX] Enhanced IBRS

2018-10-19 Thread Tyler Hicks
I've marked the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty) task as Won't Fix. The
backport is not nearly as simple as the other releases and I don't feel
like the risk of regression is worth it on that release considering that
this is a new hardware enablement type of a feature and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
only has 6 months of official support left. Users that are stuck on
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be able to use the enablement kernel to get this
feature:

Bug description:
  Description:

  Future Intel CPU's like Cascade Lake and GLK+ support Enhanced IBRS.
  Enhanced IBRS is a H/W mitigation technique for Spectre V2 bug. So,
  it's important for us to make sure that all the OSV's are using this
  feature.

  The patch that enables kernel support for this feature has been taken
  by Thomas and it's in TIP tree. So, please back port it to all the
  OSV's. Please find the patch here:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip.git/commit/?h=x86/pti&id=706d51681d636a0c4a5ef53395ec3b803e45ed4d

  Target Kernel:4.18
  Target Release: 18.10
