[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1756209] Re: i386 implementation of memmove broken since glibc 2.21

i386 implementation of memmove broken since glibc 2.21

Status in glibc package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in glibc source package in Xenial:
  New
Status in glibc source package in Bionic:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
In glibc 2.21 they optimized i386 memcpy:

  https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2015-02/msg00119.html

The implementation contained a bug which causes memmove to break when
  crossing the 2GB threshold.

This has been filed with glibc here (filed by someone else, but I have
requested an update from them as well):

  https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22644

Unfortunately they have not yet taken action on this bug, however I
want to bring it to your attention in the hope that it can be patched
into all current Ubuntu releases as soon as possible. I hope this is
not improper procedure. Both myself and another (see comment 1 in the
glibc bug report) have tested the patch provided in the above glibc
bug report and it does appear to fix the problem, however I don't know
what the procedure is for getting it properly confirmed/tested and
  merged into Ubuntu.

  As requested in the guidelines:

  1) We are using:
  Description:Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS
  Release:16.04

  2)
  libc6:i386:
Installed: 2.23-0ubuntu10

However as stated above this has been present since libc6:i386 2.21
and affects Ubuntu 15.04 onward. (I have actually tested this as well.
15.04 conveniently used both glibc 2.19 and 2.21 so it was a good test
platform when I was initially attempting to track down the problem.)

  3) What we expected to happen:
memmove should move data within the entire valid address space without
segfaulting or corrupting memory.

  4) What happened instead:
When memmove attempts to move data crossing the 2GB threshold it either
segfaults or causes memory corruption.

Bug description:
  [impact]

in bug 1752391, cloud-init was updated to check if the initramfs has
specific iscsi root device config (e.g. static initramfs config, or
ibft), and if so then set up the interface in e/n/i but do not mark it
as 'auto'. This prevents ifupdown from actually running dhclient for
the interface; the reason for the change in that bug was to prevent a
hang at shutdown, as taking down the interface removes access to the
iscsi root disk (thus hanging the system).

However, iBFT has no mechanism in its spec to provide the DNS search
domain, so while the interface ip address/netmask and gateway is
correctly set up when the system finishes booting, it does not contain
any search domain in /etc/resolv.conf. There is no way to get this
information except from an actual dhcp query/response.

In the initramfs, if open-iscsi does not detect ibft (or have static
  config built-in) then it will not create a /run/net-IFACE.conf file;
if it does find ibft (or have static config) it will create a /run
/net-IFACE.conf file with the config data that it has (e.g. with ibft,
all the interface configuration that ibft is able and configured to
provide). After this (setting up the interface and mounting the root
dev), ipconfig runs and checks for the existence of /run/net-
IFACE.conf file. If it does NOT exist, then ipconfig creates it
containing the result of the dhcp lease response that ipconfig
received - which includes the dns search domain. However, if there is
already a /run/net-IFACE.conf file, ipconfig does NOT update it. So,
the file created by open-iscsi remains, without any dns search domain.

Once the system boots, resolvconf checks for existance of the /etc
/net-IFACE.conf file, and if found it transfers some of the data into
/etc/resolv.conf (e.g. the dns search domain). Since it does not
contain any dns search domain, the /etc/resolv.conf file does not
  contain it either.

If the system is configured to start dhclient for the interface, then
dhclient receives and sets up the system resolv.conf to use the dns
  search domain correctly.

For trusty: cloud-init is very different and sets up the running
system ifupdown to start dhclient for the root device interface. The
dns search domain is therefore configured by dhclient in the runtime
  system.

For xenial: cloud-init sets up the iscsi root device's interface with
a e/n/i configuration for dhcp, but leaves its 'auto' line commented
  out, e.g.:

  # control-manual ens3f0
  iface ens3f0 inet dhcp
  dns-nameservers 169.254.169.254
  gateway 10.0.0.1

this results in no dns search domain for the system. (note: as
mentioned above, it does this due to bug 1752391).

  For bionic and later: cloud-init sets up netplan instead of ifupdown;
netplan has no such 'auto' mechanism. The initramfs-tools scripts
create a /run/netplan/$DEVICE.yaml file which (when ibft uses dhcp)
contains the 'critical' parameter, causing netplan to create a
systemd-networkd .network file with the "CriticalConnection" parameter
set to true, which prevents systemd-networkd from ever taking the
interface down, which avoids the hang on shutdown (or any other time
dhcp fails/stops for the interface). However, it is still possible to
remove netplan and install ifupdown in bionic (and later), and when
  that is done this bug

After this update all my local Maven builds fail with a crashed VM.
From the console output it looks like one of the prerequisites of
JaCoCo (Java code coverage tool) is no longer met, but I haven't been
able to figure out what the root cause is.

This problem occurs with both OpenJDK 8 and 10.

  Reproduction:

This is one of our projects: https://github.com/LableOrg/java-nicerxvi

Clone the project, and call `mvn clean install`. For me it now fails

When I downgrade to 8u162-b12-1 everything works again.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Setting the cupsd option MaxJobTime to 0 should make the server wait
indefinitely for the job to be ready for print. Instead, after updating
job-cancel-after option with MaxJobTime=0 value it results in immediate
cancelling.
This leads to problems with using filters that take some time to process -
the user needs to set MaxJobTime to a ridiculously high value to ensure the job
is not going to get cancelled instead of just disabling the cancelling timeout.

  [Test Case]

   1. Add MaxJobTime 0 option to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
   2. Setup a filter that takes at least several seconds to process.
(please find a sample imagetopdf wrapper introducing 5s delay)
   3. Submit a print job matching the filter, e.g.
lp -d my-printer someimage.jpg # jpg uses the imagetopdf wrapper

  Expected result:
The job is printed after the 5s delay.

  Actual result:
  The job is cancelled.

  [Regression Potential]

The scope of the change is limited to fixing the MaxJobTime handling
in scheduler/job.c and scheduler/printers.c. There should be no
difference in behavior except for the special value of MaxJobTime=0.

  [Other Info]
  Original bug description:

When using CUPS filters, these filters can take a few seconds to
  complete.

In this case no documents are allowed to be lost on printing failures,
so we used to set "MaxJobTime 0" in cupsd.conf which worked on Ubuntu
  14.04.

With cups on 18.04, you get the following message in /var/log/cups/error_log
whenever the filter takes a little longer:
  I [12/Nov/2018:14:43:26 +0100] [Job 18] Canceling stuck job after 0 seconds.

Then, the job is deleted and lost.

"MaxJobTime 0" is documented as "indefinite wait", but apparently cups
treats is as "wait almost not at all".

This issue appears to have also been filed upstream:
  https://github.com/apple/cups/issues/5438

Temporary workaround is to set the MaxJobTime to a very large value
  instead (e.g. 3 years)

Trusty is not affected by this bug.
