2019-03-06 Thread Steve Langasek
shim-signed uses kmodsign from the sbsigntool package. It declares a
dependency on sbsigntool, but the dependency is unversioned, and
kmodsign was first introduced in xenial in sbsigntool 0.6-0ubuntu10.1.

shim-signed needs a versioned dependency on sbsigntool.

  Qemu guests hang indefinitely

  [Description]
When running a Qemu guest with VirtIO network interfaces, detaching an
interface that's currently being used can result in a deadlock. The guest
instance will hang and become unresponsive to commands, and the only option is
to kill -9 the instance.
The reason for this is a dealock between a monitor and an RCU thread, which
will fight over the BQL (qemu_global_mutex) and the critical RCU section locks.
The monitor thread will acquire the BQL for detaching the network interface,
and fire up a helper thread to deal with detaching the network adapter. That
new thread needs to wait on the RCU thread to complete the deletion, but the
RCU thread wants the BQL to commit its transactions.
This bug is already fixed upstream (73c6e4013b4c rcu: completely disable
pthread_atfork callbacks as soon as possible) and included for other series
(see below), so we don't need to backport it to Bionic onwards.

  Upstream commit:
  https://git.qemu.org/?p=qemu.git;a=commit;h=73c6e4013b4c

   qemu | 1:3.1+dfsg-2ubuntu2 | disco/universe| amd64, ...

  [Test Case]
Being a racing condition, this is a tricky bug to reproduce consistently.
We've had reports of users running into this with OpenStack deployments and
Windows Server guests, and the scenario is usually like this:
  1) Deploy a 16vCPU Windows Server 2012 R2 guest with a virtio network
interface
  2) Stress the network interface with e.g. Windows HLK test suite or similar
  3) Repeatedly attach/detach the network adapter that's in use
It usually takes more than ~4000 attach/detach cycles to trigger the bug.

  [Regression Potential]
Regressions for this might arise from the fact that the fix changes RCU lock
code. Since this patch has been upstream and in other series for a while, it's
unlikely that it would regressions in RCU code specifically. Other code that
makes use of the RCU locks (MMIO and some monitor events) will be thoroughly
tested for any regressions with autokpkgtest and scripted Qemu runs.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Memory usage of landscape processes abnormally grows, over time,
even for processes which are generally idle and have no reason to
 grow.

   * Most of that memory leak is due to uninitialized python-twisted
logging facilities buffering logs and their context. This fix
Initializes logging with a null handler to have those unused log
 entries discarded.

   * Upstream twisted has mitigated part of the issue in recent releases
by reducing the default buffer size. Because of that, the impact
of this bug is greater on xenial.

  [Test Case]

   * register a landscape client and log the memory growth over a day

   * the effect is most noticeable on /usr/bin/landscape-client and less on
 the other processes

   * the memory difference on recent releases (bionic and up) is
expected to be smaller (~10mb on bionic instead of 200mb on xenial)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix initializes twisted logging, which is unused by landscape
so it is unlikely to have an impact.

   * The fix comes from recommendations on the upstream bug:
 https://twistedmatrix.com/trac/ticket/8164

  [Original description]

This has been noticed on several systems of mine, all 16.04.

Landscape Client takes up, over time, an *extreme* amount of system
  resources.

On a 1024MB RAM system, within 3 days to a month, Landscape Client and
it's python scripts (possibly cached data?) are consuming massive
quantities of memory - in the realm of 512MB RAM and over 400MB of the
  Swap on the system.

This is repeatably shown in other systems of mine as well. Is there a
memory leak or something in landscape-client that would contribute to
  this issue?

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1814911] Re: charm deployment fails, when using self-signed certificate, which has IP address only (SAN)

2019-03-06 Thread James Page
James Page rbasak: the recommends does not exist in xenial BUT
python-ipaddress is already installed on a xenial base image I think
12:11 Balint Reczey cjwatson, ok, sorry for the wrong vote
12:11 James Page so a happy co-incidence means that stuff works OK
on xenial, but not on trusty, where python-ipaddress is not installed
12:12 rbasak: I'm actually OK with marking the xenial task as invalid - I fixed
the UCA part with a UCA specific patch which we auto-apply to add the recommends
12:12 Robie Basak jamespage: OK - but it's currently in Xenial
unapproved and not in Trusty unapproved.
12:13 James Page rbasak: that's true - but this is a UCA specific
issue on trusty, not a general trusty issue
12:13 ricab → ricab|lunch
12:13 Robie Basak I see, OK.
12:13 James Page rbasak: xenial feeds trusty/mitaka in the UCA
12:13 Robie Basak ah
12:14 I think I understand the situation then, thanks.
12:14 Are we in agreement to drop the Xenial SRU then? I'm still open to it if
you want to push for it; I would prefer not to do it though.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Bug 1771988 introduced a fix to support IP based SAN's in certificates;
however the required new dependency (python-ipaddress) was not added to the
Recommends of the package which was an oversight of the original SRU. This
really only impacts on trusty deployments as on xenial python-ipaddress is
installed indirectly via another dependency.

  [Test Case]
  apt install python-urllib3
python-ipaddress is not installed, certs with IP based SAN's won't verify
correctly.

  [Regression Potential]
Minimal - extra package installed on upgrades or install of urllib3

  [Original Bug Report]
E.g. radosgw charm fails, when self-signed SSL certificate has IP address
only (not hostname based).

2019-03-06 Thread Juerg Haefliger
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or

Linux 4.4.176
KVM: VMX: Fix x2apic check in vmx_msr_bitmap_mode()
ax25: fix possible use-after-free
mISDN: fix a race in dev_expire_timer()
net/x25: do not hold the cpu too long in x25_new_lci()
mfd: as3722: Mark PM functions as __maybe_unused
mfd: as3722: Handle interrupts on suspend
kvm: fix kvm_ioctl_create_device() reference counting (CVE-2019-6974)
x86: livepatch: Treat R_X86_64_PLT32 as R_X86_64_PC32
net: ipv4: use a dedicated counter for icmp_v4 redirect packets
net: stmmac: Fix a race in EEE enable callback
vxlan: test dev->flags & IFF_UP before calling netif_rx()
tcp: clear icsk_backoff in tcp_write_queue_purge()
net: Do not allocate page fragments that are not skb aligned
tcp: tcp_v4_err() should be more careful
net: Add header for usage of fls64()
sky2: Increase D3 delay again
net: Fix for_each_netdev_feature on Big endian
hwmon: (lm80) Fix missing unlock on error in set_fan_div()

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:
