Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Crash kernels include an obsolete "nousb" parameter by default, which can
cause confusion since it's been deprecated in newer kernel versions.

  [Description]
  Since kernel v4.5, the correct parameter to disable USB subsystem
initialization is "usbcore.nousb" always (instead of "nousb" in case the
subsystem is built-in). This was changed by commit 097a9ea0e48 ("usb: make
"nousb" a clear module parameter").

  We need to take this into account in kdump-tools, or else we may boot
  with USB in kdump even the command-line appears to be saying the
  opposite.

  This affects Xenial onwards, since the system may be running an HWE or
  other supported v4.5+ kernel.

  [Test Case]
  1) Deploy a Disco VM e.g. with uvt-kvm
  2) Install the kdump-tools package
  3) Run `kdump-config test`and check for the 'nousb' parameter:

  $ kdump-config test
  ...
  kexec command to be used:
    /sbin/kexec -p --command-line="BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-45-generic
root=LABEL=cloudimg-rootfs ro console=tty1 console=ttyS0 nr_cpus=1
systemd.unit=kdump-tools.service irqpoll nousb ata_piix.prefer_ms_hyperv=0"
/var/lib/kdump/vmlinuz

  [Regression Potential]
  The regression potential is extremely low, since it doesn't need any changes
in makedumpfile code and we're only removing an already ineffective parameter
from the crashkernel cmdline. Nonetheless, patches will be tested with
autopkgtests and normal kdump use-case scenarios.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  Crash kernels do not advise some subsystems to perform a reset by default.

  [Description]
  Kernel has the "reset_devices" parameter that drivers can opt-in, and perform
special activity in case this parameter is parsed from command-line. For
example, in kdump kernels it hints the drivers that they (maybe) are booting
from a non-healthy condition and needs to issue some reset to the adapter.
Users currently (kernel v4.19) are: hpsa, ipr, megaraid_sas, mpt3sas, smartpqi,
xenbus.

  This should be enabled by default in the kdump config file to be added
  in the kdump kernel command-line for all versions.

  [Test Case]
  1) Deploy a Disco VM e.g. with uvt-kvm
  2) Install the kdump-tools package
  3) Run `kdump-config test`and check for the 'reset_devices' parameter:

  $ kdump-config test
  ...
  kexec command to be used:
    /sbin/kexec -p --command-line="BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-45-generic

systemd.unit=kdump-tools.service irqpoll nousb ata_piix.prefer_ms_hyperv=0"
/var/lib/kdump/vmlinuz

  [Regression Potential]
  The regression potential is very low, since it doesn't need any changes in
makedumpfile code and we're only adding a parameter on the crashkernel cmdline.
  The fix will be tested with autopkgtests and normal kdump use-case scenarios.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1830243] Re: [19.10 FEAT] KVM: Secure Linux Boot Toleration - qemu

2019-07-04 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Yeah lets focus on 2497b4a3 "s390-bios: Skip bootmap signature entries" here
then.
If ever "IPLing from a dasd attached via vfio-ccw" is wanted that would be an
extra bug/discussion.
Thanks Christian B. for pointing to the core change of this bug!

That way it applies as-is to 3.1, with very slight noise to 2.11 and even 2.5.
Started test builds in [1] as a PPA to evaluate.

Who has s390x test kernels with secure boot enabled available to give this a
try?
Marking the bug tasks incomplete until that has been verified.

For formal review MPs are up [2][3][4] as well.

P.S. Cosmic will be EOL until this reaches the SRU queues. Not preparing
that.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1771858] Re: /snap/bin not in default PATH for units, snapd should ship system-environment-generators to inject /snap/bin into $PATH

2019-07-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 229-4ubuntu21.22

---
systemd (229-4ubuntu21.22) xenial; urgency=medium

  [ Dan Streetman ]
  * d/t/systemd-fsckd, d/t/cmdline-upstart-boot:
- skip on s390x; requires grub (LP: #1830477)
  * d/p/ask-password-prevent-buffer-overrow-when-reading-fro.patch:
- prevent buffer overflow when reading keyring (LP: #1814373)

  [ Dimitri John Ledkov ]
  * Specify Ubuntu's Vcs-Git

  [ Balint Reczey ]
  * Append /snap/bin to default PATH.
Snapd ships snapd-env-generator, but systemd does not not support
environment generators. Hard-coding /snap/bin is less risky than
backporting environment generator support and since snaps are considered
to be first class packages on Ubuntu /snap/bin can safely added to
the default PATH. (LP: #1771858)

  [ Ioanna Alifieraki ]
  * d/p/systemctl-Replace-check_one_unit-by-get_state_one_un.patch
- Backport upstream PR#2768 needed for next patch
  * d/p/systemctl-load-unit-if-needed-in-systemctl-is-active.patch
- Backport upstream PR#7997 to fix alias service reports inactive while
  aliased is active (LP: #1828892)

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * This means that software installed via snap isn't transparently
  available for units to use. As snaps are first-class citizens in
  Ubuntu, we should update the PATH.

   * When a generator started to be provided by systemd, it was
  recognized that $PATH is not correctly set, nonetheless, due to an
  environment bug that systemd generators run in.

  [Testcase]

  # make snapd-env-generator executable if it is not
  $ sudo chmod +x
/usr/lib/systemd/system-environment-generators/snapd-env-generator

  # reboot, then test the effect of the fix
  $ systemd-run /usr/bin/env
  $ journalctl -e | grep PATH

  Output should contain /snap/bin

  Output should contain a complete and a valid PATH, i.e.
  PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/snap/bin"
or similar.

  [Regression Potential]

   * snapd generator was already fixed separately to cause no harm, when
  running under a broken systemd. With the corrected environment,
  generators will now run with a correct PATH out of the box. A slight
  change of PATH will be observed by all generators, when running in
  containers/initramfs-less boots. However most generators will not be
  affected as they typically do not execute external binaries.

Bug description:
  in disco proposed with new systemd and v4.19 kernel it appears that
  dmsetup / cryptsetup storage either got better or worse.

  Devices take very long to activate, and sometimes remain in use during
  test clean up.

  This leads to udisks autopkgtest failing on ppc64le and systemd's
  "storage" autopkgtest is also failing.

  I've tried to make ppc64le test more resilient, but it's still odd
  that it became unstable in disco, and used to be rock solid on
  ppc64le.

  --
  sru template for systemd upload:

  [impact]
  buffer overflow can cause memory corruption; this is seen in failed
autopkgtests

  [test case]
  see comment 6

  [regression potential]
  the patch is minimal and clearly correct; however the regression potential is
around invalid/corrupted keys read from the keyring.

  these tests require, and modify, grub. That fails on s390x on xenial
  because it does not use grub.

  [test case]

  run the autopkgtests for xenial on s390x

  [regression potential]

  low; only skipping test cases on s390x.

  [other info]

  in bionic and later, systemd-fsckd has support for zipl (s390x

  * core: export environment when running generators.
Ensure that manager's environment (including e.g. PATH) is exported when
running generators. Otherwise, one is at a mercy of running without PATH
which
can lead to buggy generator behaviour. (LP: #1771858)

  [Testcase]

  # make snapd-env-generator executable if it is not
  $ sudo chmod +x
/usr/lib/systemd/system-environment-generators/snapd-env-generator

  # reboot, then test the effect of the fix
  $ systemd-run /usr/bin/env
  $ journalctl -e | grep PATH

  Output should contain /snap/bin

  Output should contain a complete and a valid PATH, i.e.
  PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/snap/bin"
or similar.

  [Regression Potential]

   * snapd generator was already fixed separately to cause no harm, when
  running under a broken systemd. With the corrected environment,
  generators will now run with a correct PATH out of the box. A slight
  change of PATH will be observed by all generators, when running in
  containers/initramfs-less boots. However most generators will not be
  affected as they typically do not execute external binaries.

  systemctl - alias service reports inactive while aliased is active

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in systemd source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  'systemctl is-active' command reports an alias service as inactive even
though the aliased service
  is active.
  Currently the 'systemctl is-active' command does not load units to minimise
its effect on the system (i.e. that a monitoring command does not itself alter
the state of the system).
  However, this behaviour leads to inconsistencies when services are aliased.

  [Test case]

  - Test case 1 - libvirtd

  alias service : libvirtd
  aliased service : libvirt-bin

  /etc/systemd/system$ ls -la libvirtd.service
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 May 13 20:49 libvirtd.service ->
/lib/systemd/system/libvirt-bin.service

  $ systemctl is-active libvirtd
  inactive

  $ systemctl is-active libvirt-bin
  active

  - Test case 2 - sshd

  alias service : sshd
  aliased service : ssh

  /ect/systemd/system$ ls -la sshd.service
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Mar 19 19:44 sshd.service ->
/lib/systemd/system/ssh.service

  $ systemctl is-active sshd
  inactive

  $ systemctl is-active ssh
  active

  [Regression Potential]

  This fix may result into systemctl reporting inconsistent information
  concerning the status of a service.

Thanks for the tests and the feedback @dima2017 and @valia0906! Could
you also post the output of the following commands?

$ uname -r

$ cat /proc/cmdline

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/meltdown

  Boot problems after upgrade to kernel 4.15.0-48 (18.04.2LTS/i386)

Bug description:
  NOTE: Boot problems on TWO different laptops after Software Updater
  updated to kernel 4.15.0-48

  Both laptops running Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS i386/32bit with Xubuntu
  desktop. Both fresh installs from minimal CD in early April,
  originally kernel 0.4.15.0-47, both working fine.

  Bug report filed on THIS MACHINE:
  HP Compag 6710b, Intel Core2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8GHz, RAM 4GB, with Intel
integrated graphics controller GM965/GL960 (with kernel command line parameter
¨video=SVIDEO-1:d¨)

  SYMPTOM:
  4.15.0-48 requires a second ´recovery´ boot to get it up and running.
  Will not boot properly after a normal shutdown - screen goes funny and it
hangs
  Does boot successfully after a hard shutdown - detects improper shutdown,
loads grub menu, then boot successfully

  Boot problem appeared after update from kernel version 4.15.0-47 to 4.15.0-48
  Problem occurs in 4.15.0-48 kernel, but not in 4.15.0-47 (which still boots
normally after a normal shutdown)

  OTHER MACHINE:
  Even older!!! ASUS W1N Pentium M banias 1.7gHz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI Mobility
Radeon 9600 GPU. Running with command line parameter "forcepae".
  SYMPTOM:
  Won't boot at all.
  Was working fine under 4.15.0-47 as originally installed, until software
updater installed 4.15.0-48. Now it won't boot (hangs, black screen), and I
can't even get into the grub menu to try the older kernel.

  More Info on what I've already tried for troubleshooting (on the HP6710b) is
outlined in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/680486

  Happy to provide more info if needed, but I'm just an end user user
  and new to Linux, so will be on a learning curve at this end. (and
  apologies in advance if this a user problem, and not an actual bug).
  Thanks
