The kdump kernel needs to be reloaded after a CPU add/hotplug. [Test case] Do CPU add/hotplug, trigger a crash, and check for a successful kdump. [Regression potential] Multiple reloads caused by multiple sequential CPU adds may cause spurious log results, and systemd may fail to properly reload the kdump kernel. This has been handled by resetting the failure counter when doing such reloads. == Comment: #0 - Hari Krishna Bathini - 2019-05-10 05:55:40 == ---Problem Description--- kdump fails when crash is triggered after CPU add operation. Machine Type = na ---System Hang--- Crashed in early boot process of kdump kernel after crash Had to issue system reset from HMC to reclaim ---Steps to Reproduce--- 1. Configure kdump. 2. Add cpu from HMC. 3. Trigger crash. 4. Machine hangs after crash as below: --- [169250.213166] IPI complete [169250.234331] kexec: Starting switchover sequence. I'm in purgatory --- STRUCK HERE --- ---uname output--- na ---Debugger--- A debugger is not configured == Comment: #1 - Hari Krishna Bathini - 2019-05-10 05:56:46 == The problem is, kexec udev rule to restart kdump-tools service - when a core is added, is not being triggered. The old DT created by kexec (before the core is added) is being used by KDump Kernel. So, when system crashes on a thread from the added core(s), KDump kernel is failing to get the 'boot_cpuid' and eventually failing to boot.. == Comment: #2 - Hari Krishna Bathini - 2019-05-10 06:02:27 == The udev rule when CPU is added is not triggered because ppc64 does not eject add/remove event when a CPU is hot added/removed. It only ejects online/offline event to user space when CPU is hot added/removed. So, the below udev rules are never triggered when needed: SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="add", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try-restart kdump-tools.service" SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="remove", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try-restart kdump-tools.service" Also, with how CPU hot add & remove are handled in ppc64, a udev trigger to reload kdump after CPU is hot removed is NOT necessary. So, fix the CPU hot add case by updating the udev rule and drop the udev rule meant for CPU hot remove in the kdump udev rules file: SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="online", PROGRAM="/bin/systemctl try- restart kdump-tools.service" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-systems/+bug/1828596/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators Post to : group.of.nepali.translators@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~group.of.nepali.translators More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Test case] After the fix, a dump could be captured on i386. Other arches were tested and worked just as fine. [Regression potential] Systems could fail to have a dump captured, but it was tested to not be the case. === After introducing the udev rules to restart kdump-tools service when there is memory or cpu hotplug, it will be restarted during coldplug as well. This will cause the dump capture itself to be interrupted after a crash. When it is restarted and tries to dump again, it will find an existing dump file and will fail to dump. My proposed solution is to use a different systemd service for the real capture. The first is related to a definition of a memory flag bit, whereas the second is about kaslr offset calculation - both cause similar failures when collecting the vmcore in kdump environment: Excluding unnecessary pages : [ 46.3 %] / __vtop4_x86_64[ 39.341233]: Can't get a valid pmd_pte. readmem: Can't convert a virtual address(e05cb400) to physical address. readmem: type_addr: 0, addr:e05cb400, size:32768 __exclude_unnecessary_pages: Can't read the buffer of struct page. create_2nd_bitmap: Can't exclude unnecessary pages. * The report is mainly related to the first issue, which started to happen after the merge of kernel commit 326e1b8f83a4 ("mm/sparsemem: introduce a SECTION_IS_EARLY flag"), introduced in kernel 5.3. After this commit, a memory flag was changed and induced the error in dump collection. The fix is available in makedumpfile, as commit 7bdb468c2c ("Increase SECTION_MAP_LAST_BIT to 4"). This is hereby SRUed to Bionic (due to HWE kernel 5.3), Eoan and Focal. * The other issue is fixed in both Eoan and Focal, on makedumpfile 1.6.6-based version. It is related with the kaslr offset: if the offset is small enough, we may return 0 wrongly in get_kaslr_offset_x86_64(), causing the vmcore collection to fail or even worse, to erase unintended data from the memory dump. This is fixed by makedumpfile commit 3222d4ad04 ("x86_64: fix get_kaslr_offset_x86_64() to return kaslr_offset correctly"), which isn't present in versions before 1.6.6. We hereby SRU this fix for Bionic. * Notice this modification is being worked concurrently with other kdump-tools' changes in LP #1828596. [Test Case] 1) Deploy an Eoan VM e.g. with uvt-kvm; 2) Set-up console output in the guest; 3) Install the kdump-tools package; 4) Configure and collect a dump (with sysrq to panic the system) - the error aforementioned is observed given Eoan kernel is 5.3-based. [Regression Potential] * The modifications hereby proposed are minimal and scope-constrained to makedumpfile in x86_64; both are merged in makedumpfile upstream, one of them being already released in E/F. An unlikely regression would potentially fails vmcore collection in kdump environment. When testing manually, the kernel dump is collected and all works fine. By discussing with the package maintainer (Cascardo), it seems it started after a change in the instance type of the tests, to m1.large. This seems either a problem in the test infrastructure itself or a likely a "timing" problem in the test (i.e., requiring some pause or delay that is not currently enough). This demands investigation because those failures delay the package release for all arches, usually those releases contain important fixes. Also, the recurrent "workaround" is to mark the tests as "force- badtest" in ubuntu-hints for the 2 arches, which is in practice skipping the test, so those 2 arches are getting releases untested by the automatic infrastructure. [Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1762391] Re: pam_group.so is not evaluated by gnome-terminal
systemd in Xenial differs to much to cleanly apply the upstream fix. It would require reimplementing it and may be more risky than useful. Marking Won't fix. ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu Xenial) Status: New => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of नेपाली भाषा समायोजकहरुको समूह, which is subscribed to Xenial. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu 16.04 Bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1762391 Title: pam_group.so is not evaluated by gnome-terminal Status in systemd: New Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in systemd source package in Xenial: Won't Fix Status in systemd source package in Bionic: In Progress Status in systemd source package in Cosmic: Won't Fix Status in systemd source package in Eoan: In Progress Status in systemd source package in Focal: Fix Released Bug description: [Impact] pam_setcred call was missing in systemd making its implementation of the PAM protocol incomplete. It could manifest in different ways, but one particularly problematic for enterprise environments was the fact that processes were never getting group membership they were expected to get via pam_group module. [Test Case] * Add a /etc/security/group.conf entry, e.g. *;*;*;Al-2400;dialout,users * Add pam_group to your PAM stack, e.g. /etc/pam.d/common-auth * Login to the system and launch gnome-terminal (it will be launched via gnome-terminal-server launched by systemd --user + dbus). Expected result: Logged in user is a member of 'dialout' and 'users' groups. Actual result: no group membership gained from pam_group. [Regression Potential] * It introduces a new PAM warning message in some scenarios (e.g. for systemd DynamicUser=1 units) for users that can't authenticate (pam_setcred fails in such case). * In certain systems user group membership may be extended by pam_group. [Other Info] Original bug description: We are using Ubuntu in a university network with lots of ldap users. To automatically map ldap users/groups to local groups we are using pam_group.so. This has worked for years. With the upgrade from Xenial to Bionic /etc/security/group.conf is not evaluated anymore by gnome-terminal as it runs as systemd --user. Xterm, ssh, su, and tty* however do work as expected. Only the default gnome-terminal behaves different. According to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=851243 and https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=756458 this might not be a bug, but a feature. Nevertheless this behavior is very unexpected when upgrading from Xenial to Bionic and therefore should at least added to the changelog.
