Caja thumbnails are deleted during each login and logout! (only on

Bug description:
I tested the new Mint 17.2 MATE rc.
Whenever I logout all thumbnail files in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/* are
deleted.
I did not find the exact culprit. What I found out so far:

  - "caja -q" does not delete the thumbnails
  - write-protecting helps: "chmod a-w ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal"
  - a script in /etc/X11/Xreset.d/ is called too late to prevent the
deletion
  - symbolic linking ~/.cache/thumbnails from or to ~/.thumbnails does not
help

First I tried this with a Live USB stick. Then I thought it might be a
special "feature" for USB sticks. So I updated my Mint 17.1 to 17.2.
But thumbnails on a harddrive are lost too during logout. To upgrade I
  followed http://mintguide.org/system/448-early-update-linux-mint-17-1
  -rebecca-to-linux-mint-17-2-rafaela.html

Fedora seems to have had this problem too:

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu-MATE 16.04 with the mate xenial ppa. When I choose
the BlackMATE theme thene, thene both the text and the background of
Ubuntu Software Center are white (making them unreadable, except for
when something is selected). Changing colors at the Appearance
  application doesn't change anything.

  Ways to reproduce:
  1) Choose BlackMATE theme from the Appearance application.
  2) Open Ubuntu Software Center (the old one from the package software-center
not the gnome-software)

I attached an image to see the problem.

Don't suppress the shutdown menu on LTSP clients

Status in mate-panel package in Ubuntu:

Status in mate-panel source package in Xenial:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
I've already reported this upstream, but I'd like to SRU it to 16.04
  after it's fixed upstream.

  This (https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-
  panel/commit/8c25e1bdd328a8712735c0b00cf4aede7993da1d) commit, 9 years
ago, aimed at hiding the shutdown menu on LTSP clients, because they
were remote sessions to the LTSP server, and we didn't want remote
users to shut down the server by accident.

Nowadays it prevents LTSP fat clients from shutting down. Fat clients is the
recommended LTSP setup, and they run the session locally on the client, so
having a shutdown button there is required.
As for thin clients, preventing server shutdown is taken care of by
policykit, there's no need to check for an environment variable in the MATE
code (btw I'm an LTSP developer).

So, I'd like to ask you to please revert commit 8c25e1b.

  [Test Case]
Log in to an LTSP client running Ubuntu MATE.
Enable the Redmond menu, where the shutdown menu should be shown.
Verify that the shutdown menu is missing, and that it's displayed when the
commit is reverted.

Title:
Mate Advanced Menu does not appear when using Mutiny

Status in mate-menu package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in mate-menu source package in Xenial:
  Triaged

Bug description:
On mate 16.10, and 17.04 (and i believe it happened before in 16.04,
and it happens on another computer system as well) when i enable any
menu besides the simple "Main Menu" the menu will not display in the
sidebar, and mate starts acting strange (sometimes crashes entirely
and nothing works, or adding and managing applets becomes very slow
  and stutters)

By skipping the pre-defined mutiny theme and assembling a similar
layout yourself, the advanced menu can be carried over from the
Redmond layout, but if you remove it and try to add it again, it
disappears and does not work. Also by logging out it will try to
assign your previous layout partially (a duplicate notifications menu
and "show the desktop" button) and the advanced menu will also be
  missing.

Usually after a while Ubuntu will show a error message and ask to
report it, which i have done in the past.

Don't suppress the shutdown menu on LTSP clients

Status in mate-panel source package in Xenial:

  Syntax error in /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list

Bug description:
The lines in /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list end in
semicolons while they shouldn't; and that breaks xdg-mime and xdg-
  open.

  Specifically:
  $ grep plain /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list
  text/plain=pluma.desktop;

That should be like that instead:
  text/plain=pluma.desktop

A small effect of of the issue is:
  $ xdg-mime query default text/plain
  pluma.desktop;

  That should return plain "pluma.desktop".

To see a more severe effect, we have to do a few changes in order for
xdg-open to actually use that file, because by default it falls back to
gvfs-open and doesn't use it at all.
  sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/share/applications
  sudo ln -s /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list
/usr/local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
  sudo strace -e trace=file xdg-open /etc/adduser.conf 2>&1 | grep "desktop;"
  ...
  faccessat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/local/share//applications//pluma.desktop;", R_OK) =
-1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

I.e. it tries to find a "pluma.desktop;" file and fails, instead of searching
for "pluma.desktop".
Then it opens the file with "less" and "libreoffice" at the same time!

  ==> I propose that /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list gets dropped
completely.
  ubuntu-mate-default-settings ships /usr/share/mate/applications/defaults.list
as well, and that one is more complete and doesn't have syntax errors.

Bug description:
I tested the new Mint 17.2 MATE rc.
Whenever I logout all thumbnail files in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/* are
deleted.
I did not find the exact culprit. What I found out so far:

  - "caja -q" does not delete the thumbnails
  - write-protecting helps: "chmod a-w ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal"
  - a script in /etc/X11/Xreset.d/ is called too late to prevent the
deletion
  - symbolic linking ~/.cache/thumbnails from or to ~/.thumbnails does not
help

First I tried this with a Live USB stick. Then I thought it might be a
special "feature" for USB sticks. So I updated my Mint 17.1 to 17.2.
But thumbnails on a harddrive are lost too during logout. To upgrade I
  followed http://mintguide.org/system/448-early-update-linux-mint-17-1

Bug description:
pppoeconf is missing from the ubuntu-mate-desktop meta-package.

Impact: My computer is wired via a SpeedStream DSL modem/router to the
telephone line. Before I can go online my ISP requires a logon with
password. I cannot do this when booting with any Ubuntu installation
DVD I've used (14.04 & 16.04, both 32 and 64 bit). There is no way
I've found to run pppoeconf to attach to the internet unless pppoeconf
  is available to do so.

Any attempt to use pppoeconf to configure the connection just tells me
the package is not installed and to use sudo apt-get install pppoeconf
but, of course, I cannot do this until pppoeconf enables me to get
  connected.

Test Case: apt rdepends pppoeconf should list pppoeconf in ubuntu-
  mate-core and ubuntu-mate-desktop.

Workaround: My workaround has been to download the pppoeconf.deb
package to a thumb drive, then use GDebi to install it. This works but
it's clumsy and it's only been through trial and error and a whole lot
of time that I've figured this out. I doubt any newbie on dial-up or
DSL will be able to connect to the internet and so is likely to
  abandon the OS.

patch - fix Caja crash on unchecking "Show hidden and backup files" in
  prefs dialog

Status in caja package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in caja source package in Xenial:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Due to a bug in Caja code, users see it crashing when they uncheck the
"Show hidden and backup files" in the prefs dialog. It had been fixed
in version 1.14.1, but it would be nice to backport it as a patch for
1.12, which is the default version in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 (if not using
  the PPA).

Patch is provided in the attachment below.

  [Test Case]

  0. Have Ubuntu MATE 16.04 with MATE 1.12 (no xenial-mate PPA enabled).
  1. Open Caja prefs dialog.
  2. If "Show hidden and backup files" isn't checked, check it, then close the
dialog and then open it again. That's because the item should be checked first
in order to trigger the bug.
  3. Now uncheck "Show hidden and backup files".
  4. Caja crashes.

  [Regression Potential]

During several months of testing the fix in 1.14, I haven't found any
regressions. The fix does affect quite small part of code, so
regression potential in regards to the whole functionality of Caja
  should be very low.

Bug description:
My computer is wired via a SpeedStream DSL modem/router to the
telephone line.

Any attempt to use pppoeconf to configure the connection just tells me
the package is not installed and to use sudo apt-get install pppoeconf
but, of course, I cannot do this until pppoeconf enables me to get
  connected.

My workaround has been to download the pppoeconf.deb package to a
thumb drive, then use GDebi to install it. This works but it's clumsy
and it's only been through trial and error and a whole lot of time
that I've figured this out. I doubt any newbie on dial-up or DSL will
be able to connect to the internet and so is likely to abandon the OS.

Bug description:
My computer is wired via a SpeedStream DSL modem/router to the
telephone line.

Any attempt to use pppoeconf to configure the connection just tells me
the package is not installed and to use sudo apt-get install pppoeconf
but, of course, I cannot do this until pppoeconf enables me to get

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1574789] Re: SRU: xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf destroys xorg keyboard settings

SRU: xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf destroys xorg keyboard settings

Status in ubuntu-mate:

Status in ubuntu-mate-settings source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
With Ubuntu MATE 16.04, I'm unable to switch between keyboard layouts
  properly.

My locale is LANG=el_GR.UTF-8 and LANGUAGE=el.
The Ubuntu MATE installer correctly made those settings for me:
  $ grep -i xkboptions /etc/default/keyboard
  XKBOPTIONS="grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

I.e. I should be able to switch between the US and the Greek keyboard
layout using Alt+Shift, and the keyboard scroll led indicates the
  active language.

  Unfortunately ubuntu-mate-default-settings overrides the correct
settings, making me unable to switch languages via Alt+Shift:

  $ grep -i xkboptions /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf
  Option "XKbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp"

So, please make sure that 90-zap.conf *adds* "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp" to
the current xkboptions, instead of *replacing* them.
If it's unable to add instead of replacing settings, then please completely
remove 90-zap.conf.

  [Impact]

   * Ubuntu MATE included the ability to kill the X server using
Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc over a year ago while the initial Compiz integration
was being added. That facility is a hangover and no longer required.

   * This updated version of Ubuntu MATE Settings removes
usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf and restores the ability to
  switch keyboard layouts using Alt+Shift.

  [Test Cases]

   * Install Ubuntu MATE 16.04 using Greek language and locale and US
language. You will be unable to switch between the US and the Greek
  keyboard layout using Alt+Shift.

   * Once Ubuntu MATE Settings 16.04.5.3 is installed it will be
possible to switch between keyboard layouts using Alt+Shift.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The ability to kill the X session using Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc will be
lost. But none of the other Ubuntu flavours support this functionality
and it's removal restore the default Xorg behaviour.

Bug description:
  Problem occurs with: Ambiance, Radiance
  Does not occur with: Adwaita

  [ Description, QA ]

Open System Monitor, switch to "File Systems".

What you see: Progress bars with orange borders but white middles

What you should see: All colour

  [ Fix ]

Don't use the border images - use CSS to colour the borders and
  backgrounds.

  [ Regression potential ]

Could break styling of progress bars elsewhere; look in gtk3-widget-
factory, unity-control-center and anywhere else you can think of to
make sure they all still look good.
