Whenever I logout all thumbnail files in ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/* are deleted. I did not find the exact culprit. What I found out so far: - "caja -q" does not delete the thumbnails - write-protecting helps: "chmod a-w ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal" - a script in /etc/X11/Xreset.d/ is called too late to prevent the deletion - symbolic linking ~/.cache/thumbnails from or to ~/.thumbnails does not help First I tried this with a Live USB stick. Nowadays it prevents LTSP fat clients from shutting down. Fat clients is the recommended LTSP setup, and they run the session locally on the client, so having a shutdown button there is required. As for thin clients, preventing server shutdown is taken care of by policykit, there's no need to check for an environment variable in the MATE code (btw I'm an LTSP developer). So, I'd like to ask you to please revert commit 8c25e1b. [Test Case] Log in to an LTSP client running Ubuntu MATE. Enable the Redmond menu, where the shutdown menu should be shown. Verify that the shutdown menu is missing, and that it's displayed when the commit is reverted. To see a more severe effect, we have to do a few changes in order for xdg-open to actually use that file, because by default it falls back to gvfs-open and doesn't use it at all. sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/share/applications sudo ln -s /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list /usr/local/share/applications/mimeapps.list sudo strace -e trace=file xdg-open /etc/adduser.conf 2>&1 | grep "desktop;" ... faccessat(AT_FDCWD, "/usr/local/share//applications//pluma.desktop;", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) I.e. it tries to find a "pluma.desktop;" file and fails, instead of searching for "pluma.desktop". Then it opens the file with "less" and "libreoffice" at the same time! ==> I propose that /usr/share/applications/mate-mimeapps.list gets dropped completely. ubuntu-mate-default-settings ships /usr/share/mate/applications/defaults.list as well, and that one is more complete and doesn't have syntax errors. Impact: My computer is wired via a SpeedStream DSL modem/router to the telephone line. Before I can go online my ISP requires a logon with password. I cannot do this when booting with any Ubuntu installation DVD I've used (14.04 & 16.04, both 32 and 64 bit). There is no way I've found to run pppoeconf to attach to the internet unless pppoeconf is available to do so. Any attempt to use pppoeconf to configure the connection just tells me the package is not installed and to use sudo apt-get install pppoeconf but, of course, I cannot do this until pppoeconf enables me to get connected. Test Case: apt rdepends pppoeconf should list pppoeconf in ubuntu- mate-core and ubuntu-mate-desktop. Workaround: My workaround has been to download the pppoeconf.deb package to a thumb drive, then use GDebi to install it. This works but it's clumsy and it's only been through trial and error and a whole lot of time that I've figured this out. I doubt any newbie on dial-up or DSL will be able to connect to the internet and so is likely to abandon the OS. It had been fixed in version 1.14.1, but it would be nice to backport it as a patch for 1.12, which is the default version in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 (if not using the PPA). Patch is provided in the attachment below. [Test Case] 0. Have Ubuntu MATE 16.04 with MATE 1.12 (no xenial-mate PPA enabled). 1. Open Caja prefs dialog. 2. If "Show hidden and backup files" isn't checked, check it, then close the dialog and then open it again. That's because the item should be checked first in order to trigger the bug. 3. Now uncheck "Show hidden and backup files". 4. Caja crashes. [Regression Potential] During several months of testing the fix in 1.14, I haven't found any regressions. The fix does affect quite small part of code, so regression potential in regards to the whole functionality of Caja should be very low. My locale is LANG=el_GR.UTF-8 and LANGUAGE=el. The Ubuntu MATE installer correctly made those settings for me: $ grep -i xkboptions /etc/default/keyboard XKBOPTIONS="grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll" I.e. I should be able to switch between the US and the Greek keyboard layout using Alt+Shift, and the keyboard scroll led indicates the active language. Unfortunately ubuntu-mate-default-settings overrides the correct settings, making me unable to switch languages via Alt+Shift: $ grep -i xkboptions /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf Option "XKbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp" So, please make sure that 90-zap.conf *adds* "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp" to the current xkboptions, instead of *replacing* them. If it's unable to add instead of replacing settings, then please completely remove 90-zap.conf. [Impact] * Ubuntu MATE included the ability to kill the X server using Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc over a year ago while the initial Compiz integration was being added. That facility is a hangover and no longer required. * This updated version of Ubuntu MATE Settings removes usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-zap.conf and restores the ability to switch keyboard layouts using Alt+Shift. [Test Cases] * Install Ubuntu MATE 16.04 using Greek language and locale and US language. You will be unable to switch between the US and the Greek keyboard layout using Alt+Shift. * Once Ubuntu MATE Settings 16.04.5.3 is installed it will be possible to switch between keyboard layouts using Alt+Shift. [Regression Potential] * The ability to kill the X session using Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc will be lost. But none of the other Ubuntu flavours support this functionality and it's removal restore the default Xorg behaviour.
