Re: Communicators bike to car
Darren, I really think the least expensive way to do this is to buy a couple of the Motorola Talk a Bouts and put the earbud/microphone on yours. Then tape the mic part onto the inside of your helmet where your mouth is. There's a button you push to activate the mic. Went on a bike trip with some guys who used this setup and it worked well. Good range up to 2 miles... I'm planning a trip right now and I'm looking for a decent system that will allow the wife and I to converse from time to time. She'll be in the car with the in-laws and my son. Range isn't a major concern since I should be right behind them. Darren
Speedbleeders
Hey everyone! Checking in from sunny Seattle...Blue Angels doing their thing during Seafair. Good time to be here. I have a question about using the Speedbleeders. I ordered two of them and I assume the proper way to change brake fluid after installing the Speedbleeders is to open the fluid reservoir, begin pumping the brake and pour in new brake fluid until the color of what's coming out the Speedbleeder clear hose is the same color as the new fluid. Voila! No air bubbles and nice new fluid! Is that about it? I presume using this technique I'd need a bit more fluid to "clean out" the old. One other related question. I've read in past postings that people have bought 3 of the Speedbleeders and the third is used to change clutch fluid? I've only got 2. So I presume once I seal the brake resevoir I could take one of the Speedbleeders off and screw the original part back on without losing fluid. Am I correct about the third clutch nipple? Is it good to change with the brake fluid or just leave well enough alone. Bike has about 12,500 miles on it. Thanks Mike
Re: Windshield question to the List
I bought a 4+ Clearview and I love it. The only thing I'm not as happy with is it seems to get fine scratches fairly easily. You don't notice them until the sun hits just right though. I have a great setup for cleaning too. Carry a natural sponge and a cloth diaper (also may be used for "pucker factor" tight turn cleanup...) which is about as non-abrasive as one can get. They sell a polish that might work to remove the scratches. Cost was about $120 or so as I recall. Where do you get one if it does work? hawke

Sudden buzz
It may be my imagination, but after doing a couple of hundred miles this weekend I could have sworn I felt significantly more buzz/vibration than usual. I checked for proper tire inflation as a first thought (they were fine) but couldn't come up with any other clues. My fingers began to numb out fairly quickly and that hasn't happened before. Any clues? I'm also now a proud owner of the Garmin III Plus (thanks to Louis Tweed for comments on his Garmin!) and I'd like to hard wire it. I haven't looked at wiring, but after talking to another rider this weekend he said most bikes have an extra "set" of wires. What's involved in adding a cigarette style plug in for the Garmin? After owning my '94 for about 8 months I love it more each time I ride and have some great trips to look forward to this summer!

Honda X Wing
By now I'd assume many of us who own the GTS have at least heard about the new Honda X Wing, the purported successor to the Honda ST1100. Check out the link, with particular focus on the front end of this bike. Gee, looks vaguely familiar doesn't it? Now read the last paragraph of the review. Just confirms once again we're a bit ahead of the curve... http://www.motorcycledaily.com/xwingrev.html

Rear Tire Mounting
Just got my new set of Macadams and had them mounted up locally. Went to an aftermarket Harley shop and they mounted for $30 but couldn't balance the rear tire. Went across the street to get the front balanced for $10 (thought that was a rip-off) and proceeded to get the rear balanced a local Yamaha dealer for free. Both wheels are now back on the bike. I was able to get the wheel back on without changing the stays from where they were prior to removing. Re-lubed the rear axle. I think I need a bit more chain play but my main concern is how to make sure the rear wheel is trued up after making adjustments for the chain. Any help on this? I'm also not sure how to tighten the rear axle bolt down to proper tourque specs without a huge adapter for my torque wrench. What do those of you doing your own mounting use? Mike
Tire Choice
Hey Kevin! Greetings from Seattle. Just curious if you've had experience with the Macadams on the GTS? I'm ready to buy new tires have heard good things about them and the price is reasonable. Should I be looking at the Pirelli's instead? I probably won't be super aggressive on the twisties this being my first riding season... I take from your email that we might live within a couple hours of each other. Where are you located Ken? I'm up on the Parkway quite often. Get rid of those OEM tires and shod that GTS with a set of Pirelli GTS MTR23/24 120/70 front, 170/60 rear. Keep the pressures at around 38 front / 40 rear and you won't believe how much nicer the GTS handles! We've also had great success with the Bridgestone BT57 on this bike. Both are excellent tires! Take a look at my website http://www.geocities.com/~raddboy under "GTS1000 Modifications" to see all the windscreens that will solve your problem. Maybe I should put together yet another bulk order of the MRA screens for some of the newer members. XS1100, K75s, Ducati 900ss sp and some H-D's are part of my back ground. Have been trying to get caught up on all the sites for GTS. Just measured the spacer and then moved the clutch assembly the same 10 mm as is the one next to brake reservoir. Static test seems to fit my hand better. Of which I'm only 5'8'' so my reach and seating position is different then others. Which my first concern is to modify or change the wind screen. Seems that the air slaps the helmet and the turbulence makes such a dreadful noise. More then my 95 BMW K75s. I got rid of the bike. Just wore a lot of ear plugs. Didn't keep the bike that long anyway. Traded for the Duck. Have had all body panels off and newly acquired shop books to do some maintenance on bike. Have put Amigo (spelling?) horns that bolted to a bar just under headlight they fit tight but work nicely. Will need tires soon. Have not decided which brand. OEM Dunlop on front matching OEM on back. Turning 14K. As for an article about the GTS rear ABS problem in MCNews March 2000 page 6 has me a little worried. This is the my first ABS bike. Have noticed something strange on some rear braking. The rear wheel seems to pulse with a short lock up. Maybe it is letting the rear wheel come out of a lock up condition. Have not had the time to ride enough to determine real condition. Have read archives on brakes. To wit I had not seen a GTS for several years. I had the bike one week and noticed 2 that weekend. One at Peaks of Otter, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, gas station as I drove by. Then that one and then another at the bottom of Rt 43 in Buchanan where I was at the gas station there. One had soft bags and the other hard bags. I have no bags yet. Both riders were with several other bikes. Hope those that were out that day had a good one. Thought all of this would make things interesting. Will pass on other thoughts about bike later. Ken Swartz

Horn Power
Thought the group might be interested in this from the ST group if anyone is thinking about adding a horn to their bike. From: Tim Shevlin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: ST1100 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: ST1100: Electronic Horn Date: Mon, 07 Feb 2000 15:26:03 -0800 To upgrade your stock horn without adding a relay or something that shows, consider an electronic siren of the type found in most auto anti-theft systems. They're made in Taiwan, measure about 3" X 5" and will mount to the front fairing stay with a couple of hose clamps. (non-ABS models, anyway) Wire in parallel with the stock horn which is retained. It beeps or wails depending on how long you lean on the button. Look for one identified as "multi-tone electronic siren", which can be tuned to sound really ugly. Available at Orvac Electronics, Fullerton, Cal., www.orvac.com (714)871-1020 p/n TRC 90-800.$15.95 + tx. Tim Shevlin#1183 There was a follow up message that commented that anything that sounds like a siren is illegal in certain states. Apparently this unit only warbles when the horn button is depressed for more that a couple of seconds. Pretty inexpensive way of getting cagers attention, no? Also, thanks to Brandon for his commentary on my visit to Salt Lake City a few weeks ago. It was a great opportunity to meet both he and Allan and I learned alot visiting Allan's home to see his bike apart. Looking forward to riding with any of you who might venture toward the Seattle area in the coming months. Mike

Re: Tire Changing w/Pro-Lev'r
Kevin, how has the Pro-Lev'r worked for you? Curious about 3 things. First do you have any kind of "stand" or holding device for the rim while you remove and install? Or do you simply put the tire and rim on the ground or workbench. Did you order the "Rim Protectors" and are they worth the $22? Lastly, did you do your own balancing? I'm about ready to replace the original Dunlops and there's a pretty big difference between mail order prices and the local shops. The Pro-Lev'r isn't too expensive either and the savings would be made up on the first installation. Mike Esfeld - Original Message - From: "Kevin T. Touch Up Paint?
Hey everyone! I've been pretty much lurking on the listserve sidelines over the last 3 months or so since I bought my '94 GTS. What an embarrassing way to say hey to the group, but here goes. About a week ago I decided to test the ABS front/rear on a dirt road nearby. No problem there, everything worked fine. The road I went down was actually someone's driveway and made a 90 degree turn at their back yard. I decided to turn around in a pretty tight space. There was a layer of fairly large gravel (1 inch fairly sharp grade) in the section I intended to turn. Doing about 2 MPH I began the turn easing on the throttle to keep momentum and...you guessed it! Down she went. Here's a bike with 10k on it kept in pristine condition by the previous owner and I dump the thing! What amazed me was my ability to pick the bike up on my own. Incredible what anger/adrenaline will do in a pinch. Bottom line is, I ended up with a couple of nicks and several scratches. Tried some rubbing compound and wax but short of repainting all the damaged tupperware I'm looking for touch up paint. Haven't checked with the dealer yet, but anyone think they still carry it? Other ideas? Sure enjoy all the info the group sends out! Mike
