Thank you Ann,

If you happen to have links to those images, or know
of a book source with some, please let me know off
list. I am going to collect them, so I can try to
learn what's going on.

And I could always make it up as a masque dress...
masques were quite popular in Henry's court, and from
what I am reading, those masquers got to keep their
custom made outfits after the masque.

So, not real, unless you were dressing for a real

[h-cost] Reminder: Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade Pre-registration

2008-03-28 Thread Eleanor Farrell
Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade

Call for Entries

The Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade recognizes creativity,
scholarship, stage presentation, and workmanship skills in the context
of historical clothing. It celebrates the history of costume, including
all cultures, periods, and types of dress. Historical costume is
costume based on clothing that was worn or could have been worn
somewhere in the past of this world.

The Historical Masquerade will take place on Sunday, April 27th, 2008.
To enter the CC26 Historical you must be a member of CC26, as must all
models you may plan to use. We are expecting to have a particularly
large number of entries for this Costume-Con, as the Bay Area has so
many opportunities for historical costuming. Because of that, we would
like to encourage interested costumers to pre-register, even if you
only think you will have a garment completed in time. You can submit a
registration form, or contact the masquerade directors to express your
interest. Deadline for submission by mail: April 15th, 2008
(registration forms can be obtained on the Costume-Con 26 website).

Deadline for registration at the con: 8 p.m. Friday, April 25th, 2008,
but please don't wait in case we are unable to accept all submissions
due to space/time limitations.

Thanks, and we are looking forward to a very wonderful historical
masquerade at CC26!

She isn't exactly a BJD, but I started collecting(if two dolls is

produced in China, which has cut her price 1/3 - 1/2 of the Japan

Volks dolls in Japan is the Holy Grail of most BJD fans--you can have a

Re: [h-cost] Researching Folk Costumes

2008-03-28 Thread Hanna Zickermann
Hi Aylwen,

I just did a very very superficial check on Geman
sites. In short, I found out that the Vendish
were a Slavic tribe/people and closely related to
the Sorbs. There is still a minority in eastern
Germany. Vendish and Sorbish appear to have the
same roots, but during the GDR the Sorbish
culture was pampered while the Vendish were
neglected, so that there is more information
about the Sorbish than the Vendish. So says the
website of the Vendish minority, unfortunately in
German only, but they might answer an English inquiry. http://www.diewenden.de/
But perhaps the Sorbish can help you with what
you are looking for? This site has information in
English: http://sorben.com/sorb2/
Then there´s a region called Wendland in
Germany which has villages in a traditional
Vendish shape, the Rundlingsdorf. One of them
has a village museum in one of the old
farmhouses. They might have information about
costume in that area, however they appear to have
mostly 19. century things:
http://www.luechow.de/index.htm?baum_id=5154inhalt_id=112641
If the link does not work directly, here´s the
museum´s contact address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hope this helps,
Hanna

Re: [h-cost] ball jointed dolls

Popping out of lurking.

I'll contact Bjarne off-list and fill him in on some fun places onlineto
discuss BJD's.. But I also request that this discussion be droppedfrom the
list, since it's so waay off topic. :)

Cindy: Momoko has ball joints and therefore is, technicially, a BJD (some
people prefer ABJD for Asian Ball-Jointed Doll). There's a bit of an elitist
attitude out there that if the doll isn't cast resin, 60cm or 42cm tall doll in
the style of the Volks Dollfie that it' isn't a BJD, and shouldn't be included
in BJD discussions. Others, though, are far more inclusive, and are happy to
talk about Momoko, Syberites, and Tonner's Ellowyne Wilde.

I know you're generalizing, but I will raise my hand in saying that Volks dolls
are not my own holy grail. I personally am a bigger fan of more realistic
sculpts, such as those made by Elfdoll. Volks dolls happen to be the most
expensive in their size classes. You can find similar dolls for hundreds of
dollars less, and if that's still too rich for you, you can go down in size to
42cm (aka MSD), and even smaller sizes (I have several that are only around 5
tall).

To wrestle in at least a little on-topic commentary: as other's have mentioned,
BJD's are great to sew for because they have very correct proportions, except
for their ridiculously long legs. Ok, some also have ridiculously large boobs.
There's a couple of folks out there doing historic clothes and shoes for these
dolls, and some of the doll clothing companies have been doing
psuedo-historical stuff for a while. Ellowyne Wilde and her size counterpart
Evangeline Ghastly have some really nifty, psuedo-Victorian outfits. If you're
interested in more information, contact me off-list.

And now back to lurking. :)

We are in Australia but I buy a lot from the US. I would prefer to buy from
US or Australia, not the UKas our dollar is too weak against the pound
euro.
I've found a few pictures of what we need. The bodice/waistcoat will be
black, blouse white cotton with cotton lace (so it can be bleached
later) and the full circle skirt purple with gold trim. Ideally bodice black
wool, but that may be too expensive, so a solid cotton twill lined with
cotton, black eyelets for lacing up. If anyone cares to quote for a whole
outfit that would be fantastic. We need 15 of these but have a limited
budget, so we can sew trim on to save costs hem the skirts. I have to pay
for all this myself as the students can't afford it. If I can pay off in
instalments that would be perfect, and we'd need to do one as a dummy run to
make sure its okay. I'm happy to pay for that one as well. We need to have
these done by the end of July, so there is not much time. We want to use
them in August and will be touring to New Zealand in September.

[h-cost] Adding color to silk

2008-03-28 Thread Alexandria Doyle
I have a length of silk taffeta that has an embroidery pattern that is
invokative of an Elizabethan pattern, except that it is all off-white
on off-white. I would like to add color to the flowers without
embroidering them all.
So I was thinking of painting dabs or washes of color to those
flowers. I know that there are special paints that are typically used
on silk, but I was wondering about using paints closer to hand -
watercolors, gouaches, acryllics and oils? Anyone have experience of
using these on silk fabric? This gown will be worn occasionally -
maybe two or three times a year at most, and I expect it to be hand
washed only when it needs it.

Acrylic will make it stiff.

I once added colour to trim by hand painting it with regular dye - it was
highly successful.

Having gotten way too much paint on my clothes over the years, (I paint
sets, I can tell you that acrylics do not easily wash out. Plus, they go
through the washer and dryer. I've washed my paint clothes loads of times.
Try the wash/paint technique first, because they do add stiffness.

I have used Dy-na-flow on silk. I got a set of about ten colors for
about $15 online, but they are also readily available in craft and
fabric stores. I used the brights set, but got pastel results. My yellow
and pink came out nice, I had trouble getting a good orange down, and
the darker blue and purples just washed out. The colors bleed, so if
you wanted it to stay in one place you need to put down a wax or
something like they show on the silk painting websites to outline your
shape. Once it dries it is colorfast.

I've also used Tulip Color Spray, which is more of a paint than a dye. I
got good color with the blues and greens I used, but the result was a
bit stiff. This stuff also bleeds and spreads, if that's not the effect
you want you need to outline it with something.

My experience with acrylic paint on fabric is that fabric readily takes
the paint and holds it well. You wouldn't think water based paint is
hard to remove, but it is. The fabric will be stiff where it has been
painted, it's essentially a layer of plastic. The advantage is that it
won't spread after it's applied, and you have pretty good control with a
brush in putting it exactly where you want it for detail.

Having done a certain amount of fabric painting in my youth, dilute
acrylic paints a bit so they sink into the fabric and are more flexible.
There's medium you can buy to add that's specifically for fabric, but I
never noticed that it made much of a difference.

I seriously suggest using the medium if one wants to
paint with acrylics on fabric. Acrylic will flake or
peal over time, and the medium helps to prevent that.
I lost my favorite theatre stage hands shirt because
we didn't know that when we painted them with watered
down, but straight acrylics.

Can you find a site with the St. Nick painting?
It is possible (without seeing the painting) that it could be a wide guard

Mary Tudor's lady in waiting, and the girl on the right in the St
Nicholas picture, don't appear to be tucking up their skirts in any way.
(In the St Nicholas, I can't tell what her hands are doing, but her
apron is lying flat). I'm intrigued, if this is allegorical or an
artistic convention,
why did artists want to show shorter skirts like that? Is it just that
she's so poor, she's grown out of her gown ;-) ?
