[h-cost] white and red cotton

2010-12-11 Thread SNSpies
In "The Book of the Islamic Market Inspector" (Oxford University Press,
1999), written in 12th-century Cairo by al-Shayzari, he says:

"You must not mix new cotton with old nor red cotton with white." p. 89

What does he mean by "red cotton"?

Thank you.

It seems reasonable that he means the same thing I mean when I sort my
clothes before doing the laundry... presumably there was some chance
of the dye rubbing off. They didn't want pink socks and underwear
then, either!

Re: [h-cost] white and red cotton

2010-12-11 Thread Deb Salisbury, the Mantua-Maker
I suspect he is referring to a cotton like nankeen, which naturally grows in shades from yellow to dull red.
I know it grows (grew?) in the far east, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was found in the middle east.

[h-cost] What book do you want to see in your Christmas stocking?

2010-12-11 Thread Onaree Berard
I would love to get "The Medieval Account Books of the Mercers of
London", but for some reason every time I think about it my credit
card mumbles something about upping the meds before trying to hide
under the couch.

What is up with that ;->

So, what book do you want?

Re: [h-cost] What book do you want to see in your Christmas stocking?

2010-12-11 Thread Bella
By a stroke of good luck, I'm going to see the book I wanted to see in my
Christmas stocking this year. It's "The Plictho of Gioanventura Rosetti.
Translated and edited by Sidney M. Edelstein and Hector C. Borghetty.
Cambridge,
Mass.: M.I.T. Press, 1969. (Deluxe Edition)"

http://www.jstor.org/pss/3102701

Out of print and a touch on the expensive side (for me) the odd time of two
I've
seen a used copy for sale. Stumbled across a private sale through Amazon.com
for
only $80US, which my kids have bought for me for Christmas. I almost didn't get
it - the seller wouldn't post it internationally. Thanks to a friend of mine in
the US who agreed to receive it from the seller and ship it on to me it will be
here in a few days. I can't open it until Christmas though - the kids would
kill
me. :-)
