[h-cost] Nahant Victorian Day Ball

2011-05-10 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear All
Does anyone planning to attend the Nahant Victorian Day Ball in Boston
this July have a hoop I can borrow? (I am a short person) I don't have
room in my luggage for a hoop this visit, and its ended up that I
either wear 1840 without a hoop or borrow a hoop for 1860s. Also, does
anyone know how I purchase tickets for this ball? We leave in four
weeks time and I'm trying to get all my purchase completed before I
lose internet access.

2011-05-10 Thread Patricia Dunham
Apparently Anne wasn't even first; numerous ref's online to, I think, Princess
Philippa, daughter of Henry IV (Bolingbroke), 1406

She was married on 26 October 1406 to Eric of Pomerania [Scandinavia, Sweden]
in Lund Cathedral. Philippa was actually the first documented princess in
history to wear a white wedding dress during a royal wedding ceremony: she wore
a tunic with a cloak in white silk bordered with grey squirrel and ermine).

2011-05-10 Thread Beteena Paradise
I think it depends on what they are trying to say. If they are saying Who wore
it first? then it opens up the spectrum to any who ever lived. But if they are
specifically saying Who made it a trend? then I think the answer is obviously
Queen Victoria. Prior to Queen Victoria, it wasn't the usual thing to do.
Otherwise, after Anne of Brittany or Philippa of England, there would have been
a lot of people wearing white. But because we are onlly mentioning those two,
clearly it wasn't happening (or at least no documentation has survived to us of
it happening). Know what I mean?

Re: [h-cost] 1st White Wedding Dress Trend: Anne of Brittany orQueen Victoria

2011-05-10 Thread AnnBWass
When I taught history of costume, many years ago, I remember reading the
occasional reference to a white wedding dress for a royal/noble bride,
supposedly because it was difficult to bleach silk to a pure white color--hence

it was expensive and conferred status.

Let us also remember that white was very popular for both day and evening
wear during the early 19th century, so a bride's white dress might indeed be
one she continued to wear long past the wedding.

Even after Victoria, brides in the mid- to late- 19th century often chose
colors, and, of course, in the 20th century, there were many instances of
brides (often war brides) wearing colored suits to be married in.

So saying so and so started a trend might be over-simplifying, but what
does one expect from a newspaper article?

If you are only using Anne and Vicky as the comparison it would be
Victoria.
Victoria was a trendsetter due to wider media spread.
This sight is closer to what I have heard but still no docs.

What i find annoying is that every site repeats the Anne of Brittany
marrying in a white gown but I can not find a source that verifies it. Most
pics. have her in gold, black or pink/red. Is there a written source?

just heard about Stanford - the waltz week is on but the dance week is

Sorry, I have been so busy with other things. We are spending so much

get enough registrants to not lose money in this horrible economic

A page had just been set up to pay on-line for the Nahant ball:

It's our first year accepting paypal, so let me know if there are any

status of the Stanford week. We were very sorry to hear that it was

In 1913, my not-so-rich farm bride grandmother wore dove gray for her
wedding. Then sob she _cut_it_up to make my father's first suit!

In 1943, my mother wore a plain suit (whose color she never told me!)
for her wartime wedding.

Alas. We all missed the chance to wear something spectacular. I wore a
simple white dress, not even floor length.

If Anne?of Britanny chose White for her wedding, I have seen no further

for royalty. What ever color or fabric, it would have had cost and politics

By the time of Victoria there were additional psychological and moral, symbolic
