Re: [h-cost] where to buy lucet?

Rebecca,

I have at least a dozen lucets (plain polished wood, mostly cherry, with
a regular handle) that my husband made a few years ago for me to teach
with andsell. Contact me offline at lis...@juno.com if you are
interested.

I got mine at Lacis

I haven't purchased a lucet from him, but the maker of my inkle loom also sells
lucets, and if their quality is on the same level as the looms, they should be
excellent.

Minor comment on lucets in general. I find the handled ones less easy
to carry around, because they don't fit into a needlework bag as well.
I think the main thing the handle is good for is spinning the lucet
around while working, but I've never missed having one and don't think
it a necessary feature.

Just a remark :)

PS if you're just learning-- be sure not to pull your threads too
tightly! Unless they are perfectly spun, they will cause you grief if
you work too tight (as I do!). It helps to learn how to pull up just
enough, but not too much. This takes a bit of practice with the
desired thread. I've learned from bitter, hand-numbing experience not
to lucet so tightly.

Carolann, thank you for the detailed analysis of your collection!  This is so
interesting -- I never knew such specialized fabric existed.

By special order, but... yes!  You can still buy pre-corded fabric!

Fabric is a little different than what was used at Read Homestead, which has
wider cordless areas (presumably meant for tucks as that is how they were used).

There were many types of pre- corded fabric available with different spacing,
different size cords, different cording patterns. A wider cordless area does
not necessarily indicate tucks. :-)

I saw these and thought beginners might get a kick out of making their own from

I use the style without a handle. The base rotates in the palm of my hand
quite comfortably. I had to try a few before I found the right shape for my
hand.

It was suggested to me that the cord could be wrapped around the
handle as you work. But I realized I had to unwrap and rewrap as it
got longer. For me it's not about the handle so much as the shape of
the tines. I like them flared a bit so the work does not fall off
easily. Also nice and smooth, but if there is a problem there you can
fix it with sandpaper.
