Re: [h-cost] New York garment district
I'd suggest you go to Elegant Fabrics on 40th Street, between 7th Ave. and 8th Ave. That will fill up your allotted time all by itself. Also, I've checked the Met and FITM for costume exhibits and there doesn't seem to be anything particularly exciting on their schedules. Can anyone suggest any other museums or exhibitions that would have (historical) costumes on display? Re: [h-cost] New York garment district
Oh good lord! Just two? MJ Trim is a great shop. They have a website, fyi. Nearby, there is a block or two with little fabric store crammed to the gills next to another little fabric store crammed to the gills, next to another one. All of them have slightly different fabric. And they make deals for cash. It is on the same street as Beckenstien's, http://www.citysearch.com/profile/7085136/new_york_ny/beckenstein_s_men_s_fabric_czar.html which has men's suiting and makes suits for the stars. I wish I would have had them measure me up and gotten one when I was there a few years ago. Henry W. Re: [h-cost] New York garment district
I have to second Elegant Fabrics. You don't need to go in knowing what you want. The fabric, and the prices, will entice you to buy. If I'm just looking for bargains, I go to NY Elite Fabrics at 554 8th Avenue. For trims, I have good luck with BQ Trimmings, 210 W 38th St (though it may be called Shine Trim now). If you just want to drool, look at the ribbons at Mokuba (137 W 38th St). There is a sit down Thai restaurant at 318 W. 36th St (near 8th Ave) that serves up a tasty and quick lunch.
