I’m looking for brim wire and not having a whole lotta luck.

Sources, anybody? The best I can find so far is Farthingales in Canada….
slower and with duty. I’m in the US. A millinery company wants a minimum
order of $76— their “low” price. Right.

 I looked for Janet Wilson Anderson’s Raiments/ AlterYears but can’t find a
 presence on the web??

I need 3 yd minimum, with crimpers/joiners for ends.

 Thanks, List!

[h-cost] Costuming Project

2013-10-10 Thread Aurora Celeste
I've started a new project I wanted you all to know about:

For almost a decade now I've had this idea of doing costuming videos. It
started as someone should do this and eventually morphed from I should
do this to I HAVE to do this. So what is it? I want to produce a series
of topical videos about costuming. Each episode would concentrate on
science and techniques, not projects you won't be motivated to finish.
It'll have information for everyone, from beginners to advanced users who
want to learn the why of things they do. I've been hard at work these past
few months putting together a business, budget, and business plan as well
as lining up topics and starting on scripts and storyboards.

Sound cool? You can help! I'm funding the first season through Indiegogo
here: http://igg.me/at/dramaticthreads/x/281227 Please donate a few
dollars, and share it with your friends!

Lots of people expressed interest, so the Corset-a-Long is a go! You can
see the schedule of posts here:

Re: [h-cost] Question for experienced sempsters

2012-10-08 Thread Aurora Celeste
Washing and drying shrinks fabric. Wearing stretches it back out again.
The shrinking from washing is not a permanent process, especially for
fabric under stress (like tight clothes).

I have a mystery that I'd like some insight on. I've spoken in person to
all the costumers I know and all are baffled.

I made a dress for my daughter from decent quilting cottons from Joanne's.
It has a tight fitted bodice with boning. The dress stretched so I took it
in. It stretched some more so I put elastic in key areas. It stretched
 some more.

Yesterday just for giggles I tried it on. It fits. I'm substantially
larger than my daughter (maybe 2 sizes). What the heck?

The dress will fit her immediately after washing drying but begins
stretching back out within an hour or so.
Does anyone have any ideas? The fabric was washed dried before I cut it
 out.

This is very discouraging. I worked hard to make it fit her just right.
Now it looks like I'm a lousy sempster. But at least I guess I get a dress
 out of it.

I use mine for creepy-crawlies like velvet and sheers, and for leather.

I had a walking foot for my Bernina, but I sold it. I found myself not
really needing it, and not liking it when I did use it. Save yourself some
 money and don't buy one.

You shouldn't need to baste the seam before sewing it with your new
 Bernina,
UNLESS it's velvet. Pinning should be sufficient. You'll find the machine
 feeds beautifully.

 Hello the list:

I'm directing a production of Conor McPherson's The Seafarer, and one of
the characters claims to be wearing a Versace jacket made of dogskin. He
clarifies that it's a kind of fabric, and another character feels the
sleeve and remarks on its softness.

I'm sure McPherson doesn't mean houndstooth, although I did find a picture
of a Versace tuxedo-style jacket supposedly in houndstooth but looking
distinctly solid-black to me. Certainly the Broadway production, which
McPherson directed, didn't have a character in a houndstooth-check jacket.

Can't find an answer on the Internet. Does anyone know of a fabric with
 this name?

 Thank you for any help!
