Re: [h-cost] New York Garment District
Thank you for the suggestion. I would very much like to see this exhibit, but unfortunately my trip isn't until March. Is there a permanent exhibit on display on the Costume Institute? I can't seem to find any information one way or the other on the Met's website. One of Queen Victoria's gowns is on display, and two from Alexandra, Edward's wife. You should not miss it. It is in the costume institute, below the Egyptian Exhibit. I believe the show runs until February. Monica ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] New York garment district
I'm going to be in New York next spring (mid-March) and I can squeeze in a couple of hours in the garment district, and I'd appreciate some suggestions: If you could only visit two fabric/trim shops, which would be at the top of your list? Also, I've checked the Met and FITM for costume exhibits and there doesn't seem to be anything particularly exciting on their schedules. Can anyone suggest any other museums or exhibitions that would have (historical) costumes on display? Re: [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
Thank you, everybody, for all the wonderful suggestions. I had no idea that there was so much color in gloves in the Regency. I thing the suggestions of either fawn colored gloves or a sky blue will be best, but it will be easier now to find the right ones with a much wider color palette to work with. Thanks! [h-cost] Regency era evening gloves
I am making a Regency evening gown for a friend. It consists of a black lace overdress with a slate blue lining. I'm uncertain as to what color gloves should be worn with this color ensemble/ I think white gloves against the black and slate blue would look garish, and black gloves would look too much like mourning wear, which it is not. What would they have worn in Regency times? Thanks, Julie ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] fiddly question
Thank you all for your answers. The ribbon is 1.5" wide, and definitely synthetic. I tried to make a narrow hem as suggested but I'm either clumsy or doing something wrong because it lookedlumpy. I think I will try the 45 degree swallowtail cut. Would it be period if, instead of folding the ribbon in half and cutting it on the angle, I folded it into quarters and then cut it, creating a sort of double swallowtail effect? Thanks for all the advice, Julie ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] fiddly question
I'm making a couple of Regency bonnets, with satin ribbons as ties. How do you finish off the end of the ribbon? Hem it? Cut it, and if so, how? Such a minor detail, but I'm stumped. Thanks, Julie ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] measurement chart
I am going to be making a Regency outfit for a friend who lives on the other side of the country. Since there won't be any chance to fit it, I need to get the most exhaustive set of measurements possible. Can any suggest a site that has a fill-in measurement chart that is really detailed, that I can send her? Like, not just bust and waist measurement, but bust and then under-bust, upper arm circumference, side-seam (underarm to waist), shoulder to shoulder across the back, and so on. The sort of measurements you'd need to construct a detailed garment with. I've tried searching but apparently I'm not using the right search terms. I keep getting charts with sizing on them, not blanks to be filled in. Thanks! Julie ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] The White Queen
"The White Queen" would have you believe that ALL the men at court, along with about 90% of the women, went around bareheaded all the time. WTF?? Re: [h-cost] Butterick 5832
Thanks for the help. I'm also wondering about two small details on this pattern. It's designed to close with hooks and eyes (wonder of wonders, NOT a zipper) but I wonder if lacing might be more appropriate to the time period (1840). Also, the sleeves end with a slit (at least 3-4 inches) closed at the wrist with a button. I feel that even if the slit is appropriate (and I'm not sure it is), it's designed too long. (I won't even bother to discuss the fact that the skirt is too narrow - they simply didn't use enough petticoats on the model). I appreciate all the input. I've had exactly the right fabric for an 1840 dress for years, but never found a pattern where I really liked the sleeves AND the bodice. And I've been too lazy to cobble pieces together from different patterns. All this dress needs is a pelerine! [h-cost] Butterick 5832
New-ish pattern from Butterick, day dress 1837-1840 (mislabeled in the pattern book as "Civil War"). http://butterick.mccall.com/b5832-products-27980.php?page_id=147 Everything looks spot on to me, except for the oddly asymmetrical bodice. That would have to be changed, but I can't decide if the pleated bertha should be the wide right side or the narrow left side. Any thoughts or comments? [h-cost] Costume exhibits in New York
Does anyone know of any upcoming costume exhibits in New York, specifically end of April? I've checked the Met and FITM websites and there isn't anything (aside from a standard exhibit from the collection at FITM). Ditto The Frick and the Museum of the City of New York. Also, does anyone know if the costume workshop at the Metropolitan Opera has tours? Thanks, Julie ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Wow!! I didn't know you could do that with Google! Thank you so much for that factoid, and for finding the source of the painting. Using that, I learned that the painting in question is: Ragazza in costume veneziano, 1874 by Louis Joseph Rapha?l Collin big version: http://www.lineadombra.it/sanmarino/images/headers/header_informazioni.jpg -E House http://images.cheezburger.com/imagestore/2010/9/9/330d9013-0b7f-468b-9c3a-b22044bb4e02.jpg ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
