Re: [h-cost] A bit OT doll bustle dress question for bonnet

Hi Deredere!

Welcome to the wonderful world of BJDs!!! Costuming for them is
exactly why I got into them to. ;-) I don't know much about that
time period at all but I would think a hat, either a straw boater or
a small hat perched on top of her head. However, I freely admit
that is a guess. Have you found Den of Angels
yet? http://www.denofangels.com If not, you will probably find it
very helpful and enjoy it a lot. I really envy you being able to get
the Dark Elf Quinn!

Cheers,
Danielle

Deredere, what period of bustle do you have in mind? Sheer cotton dresses
for the late 19th dresses with bustle would be rather unusual. Satin,
faille, medium weight cotton (think eyelet), or light weght wool or other
linen are more the fabrics found in historical costumes of the period.

You might check Fran's voloumes on the Gilded Age for a referance. In
addition to patterns, you will find a wealth of historical comment dealing
with color and construction. Depending on the size of your doll, you might
be able to use many of the patterns without enlargement.

Queen Maude, (my latest passion) is 16/17 tall and I am having great
success in using Fran's patterns.

Good luck and happy seaming

Deredere:

I would suggest a fairly plain straw hat with a ribbon , either a boater, or
a wider brin, perhaps tied under the chin.

I love your inspiration gown!! I think a small tilted-forward hat would be
much more likely then a bonnet. You can take a look at some period
pictures here: http://www.demodecouture.com/hair/hair_early.html to get an
idea of the shape. I've just gotten Lynn McMaster's pattern for a full
sized version of the kind of hat I'd recommend, but since I haven't tried
it yet, I can't comment on the pattern itself. (http://lynnmcmasters.com/
- click on the New Patterns Link, the pattern I'm talking about is in the
third row down on the left.)

Good Luck!

RE: [h-cost] A bit OT doll bustle dress question for bonnet

2008-01-07 Thread Abel, Cynthia

On the contrary, many white dresses in sheer fabrics(although layered so
the effect was opaque)were worn in the summer months were worn by the
fashionable during the bustle period, see Harper's Bazar(yes, that's the
spelling) on microfilm in many larger public libraries. There are lots
of fashion plates and written guidelines for proper mourning wear and
its duration for widows down to what we would consider rather distant
relatives, for the rich and fashionable to follow.

Few gowns survive because of wear and tear, discoloration, staining and
greying, and when such gowns did survive the summer season, parts could
be recycled into another garment, children's clothing or even
handkerchiefs. Dyeing and redyeing of clothing was also common to extend
a garment's life and then mourning would require dyeing everthing but
underpinnings to black or at least lilac and gray for half-mourning.
Depending on the style, bustles could be fairly lightweight to weighing
a few pounds. A fashionable woman could have several pounds of clothing
from underpinnings to outergarments in one ensemble to
support--definitely eliminating the need for portable weight equipment
carry around!

I too, recommend Fran Grimbel's two books on Gilded Age fashions.

I would love a BJD, but the cost is prohibitive to my budget right now.

Mmmm...lov-er-ly!

A straw would be perfect, like Kim suggests. I think a boater is too
masculine for the frilly frock. They do wear straws similar in proportions to a
boater but usually tilted forward with the brim bending down on each
side...sorta
like a Pringel potato chip... and decorated with flowers and bows and such. A
ribbon can tie under the chin or behind at the nap of the neck, under a mass of
hair.

I have seen some women in wide brimmed hats in the 1880's in research I did
for a western. They seemed to be worn either straight on and perfectly
horizontal, or even on the back of the head, a style often exaggerated for
can-can
dancers. These seemed to lack a lot of fru-frunot even a ribbon tied under
the chin or anywhere. But sometimes an enormous hat pin or two were visible.
