[h-cost] Book Alert

2009-06-09 Thread Leah Janette

I just got a notice that the V&A is coming out with several new medieval titles
in November (hopefully). Two that should be of interest to this list are:

Fashion and Armour in Renaissance Europe : Proud Looks and Brave Attire

and

Medieval Jewellery in Europe 1100-1500

All Text, but there is the promise of an illustrated second volume this
sometime "real soon" now. Things are described in such a way, that if you
have much experience with period items you will have little trouble
envisioning them. Of course, for me the written word translates into a
vision in my head. I 'see' the story a book is telling. It makes it hard
when my favorites are made into movies and the characters don't look a thing
like I imagine them!

the eye glasses.

Is it illustrated at all or is it simply text?

No, this has not been published, and from what I can gather, no-one
seems able to give me a date for publication. Janet was on the 4th
draft when she died, so I would not have thought there was a lot to
do, as she had done all the drawings, or so she told me.

Word on the street is that the long-awaited analysis volume, which was
shelved with Janet Arnold's death (she was doing the costume analysis) is
back in production. I don't know when it will be coming out. I have this
information from one of the scholars who is doing one of the other
sections of analysis.

[h-cost] Book Alert - Inventories of Henry VIII

2006-02-04 Thread Wanda Pease
I get the David Brown Book Company alerts. They have The Inventories of
Henry VIII edited by David Starkey for $72 I paid $170 for my copy and
was happy. I had seen it at David Brown for $144 and thought it a bargain.
This is simply an unbelievable sale for a huge book stuffed with information
far in excess of the dry listing of what Henry and Edward owned. It also
has a glossary and dictionary. My copy bristles with little yellow sticky
notes marking fascinating things like the knitted hose, the hound collars,
the eye glasses.

A truly "Must have" book if you are into things Tudor.

it, bypassing the deadly other sale offerings!
