The only thing I've seen is a packet of postcards. Nice, but not much use.

I'd check the People Center at the American Museum of Natural History
for costumes of indigenous peoples. I might also check the Museum of
the City of New York, the New York Historical Society, the Museum of
Folk Art, and the American Crafts Museum to see if there will be any
interesting exhibits. You might also check to see if you can do some
specific study at the Met's Costume Institute, if there's something
particular you wish to research.

Thank you for the suggestion. I would very much like to see this
exhibit, but unfortunately my trip isn't until March.

Is there a permanent exhibit on display on the Costume Institute? I
can't seem to find any information one way or the other on the Met's
website.

I'd suggest you go to Elegant Fabrics on 40th Street, between 7th Ave. and
8th Ave. That will fill up your allotted time all by itself.

I'm going to be in New York next spring (mid-March) and I can squeeze in a
couple of hours in the garment district, and I'd appreciate some
suggestions: If you could only visit two fabric/trim shops, which would be
at the top of your list?

Also, I've checked the Met and FITM for costume exhibits and there doesn't
seem to be anything particularly exciting on their schedules.

Oh good lord! Just two? MJ Trim is a great shop. They have a website, fyi.
Nearby, there is a block or two with little fabric store crammed to the gills
next to another little fabric store crammed to the gills, next to another one.
All of them have slightly different fabric. And they make deals for cash. It is
on the same street as Beckenstien's,
http://www.citysearch.com/profile/7085136/new_york_ny/beckenstein_s_men_s_fabric_czar.html
which has men's suiting and makes suits for the stars. I wish I would have had
them measure me up and gotten one when I was there a few years ago.

I have to second Elegant Fabrics. You don't need to go in knowing what you
want. The fabric, and the prices, will entice you to buy. If I'm just
looking for bargains, I go to NY Elite Fabrics at 554 8th Avenue.

For trims, I have good luck with BQ Trimmings, 210 W 38th St (though it may
be called Shine Trim now).

If you just want to drool, look at the ribbons at Mokuba (137 W 38th St).

There is a sit down Thai restaurant at 318 W. 36th St (near 8th Ave) that
serves up a tasty and quick lunch.
