If you can take it apart, use Naval Jelly on the rust. -Original Message- From: h-costume-boun...@indra.com [mailto:h-costume-boun...@indra.com] On Behalf Of Audrey Bergeron-Morin Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 9:02 AM To: Historical Costume Subject: Re: [h-cost] antique dress form? Don't use WD-40. If you have to use some kind of lubricant, use a silicon-based one that won't stain (Giga-A-Loo comes to mind, if that's available in your area). I guess sewing machine oil would also be much cleaner (and less toxic!) than WD-40. The best thing you could do, though, is take the thing apart and give all rusted pieces a good scrub with a steel wool pad first to get rid of the rust. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

And if you do apply anything to the form, use a small paint brush or Q-tip to get only on the metal -Original Message- From: h-costume-boun...@indra.com [mailto:h-costume-boun...@indra.com] On Behalf Of Audrey Bergeron-Morin Sent: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 12:02 PM To: Historical Costume Subject: Re: [h-cost] antique dress form? [h-cost] antique dress form?
Hello! I'm looking for advice on cleaning an early (1910s) dress form. The fabric is in almost perfect condition, but the metal bands and screws have some rust and (minor) corrosion. Most of the metal parts move well, but a few are stiff and so are some of the screws/nuts that allow for adjusting. If I use any rust remover or something like WD-40, I risk getting it on the fabric or leaving residue on the metal that might damage garments I put on the form. Help! Any suggestions ... or cautions? thanks! Melissa ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
