Yes that's it. And they only have a 1 yard minium now. Although directly across the st you can find handkerchief linen for $4-5 a yard. All I ever make underwear out of. Just look for the going out of business sign. Oh and they will haggel with you, be prepared. Not my favorite part, but if you're a good deal broker and you're buying quantity they'll go down in price. -Robin On Thu, Apr 2, 2009 at 10:53 PM, Saragrace Knauf wickedf...@msn.com wrote: I think this might be the store you are talking about: http://www.graylinelinen.com/ How'd I miss it when I was there? Re: [h-cost] New York fabric shopping
Despite the fact of its popularity, despite the 'tourists,' I have to admit I love Mood. I've never gone in there without finding something delightful, which I can't say about some of the other places in the area. It's mainly because Mood seems to carry more than the usual amount of natural fibre fabrics. Sometimes you have to ask for help finding specific items. I'm a $5/yd kind of person who likes to buy things on sale when I find them and then figure out how to use them. But the prices at Mood are not totally outrageous. For example, a fine silk taffeta was the same price there as it was at Denver Fabrics online ($14/yd), and I nabbed a beautiful semi-sheer cotton/silk blend there last year for $8/yd. That was something I had been looking for in vain on online sites. The wools are plentiful and, while not usually $5/yd at least you know when you buy a worsted twill there you can see what quality you are getting. (As you can tell I've been burned online by the we say it's a worsted wool twill but we really meant it's a cheapo tricotine.) - Hope Robin Betzhold wrote: Same thing with Mood fabrics, well worth seeing but expensive. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions so far. I'm getting psyched, and believe it or not, so is my husband (who was dubious about the time we allotted on the schedule for fabric shopping, until he realized there was stuff HE was looking for...) Re: [h-cost] New York fabric shopping
I haven't been following this NY shopping thread, since I never go there, but it brings up a question for me. I heard a year or two back, that fabric shopping in the big cities isn't what it used to be. If I take on a new design job I've just been offered, I may have to travel to L.A. to shop for it. I recall someone saying that the garment district doesn't have all the good jobbers it used to. True or not? Re: [h-cost] New York fabric shopping
Greetings-- I'm not sure about LA, but here in Toronto we've probably lost about 1/3 of our good independent fabric stores in the fashion district. For whatever reason, they've been mostly replaced by bead stores. I've also been told that one of our old standbyes, Designer Fabric Outlet (the orange bag store to locals) has reduced significantly its stock of fashion fabrics in favour of home decor. One of my favourite stores moved elsewhere in Toronto off of Queen St. We also used to have a few stores scattered amidst the Chinatown stores, but those are also mostly gone now, too. It's still way better down there than at the local chain stores, but I have definitely found the variety has dropped off a bit. My favorite stores are all the hole in the wall places on 39th between 7th and 8th. My personal favorite store has been having a going out of business sale for the past 3 years...there is one store that sells nothing but 100% linen and they have some neat finds. I just start at one end of the street and work my way to the other. Daytona Trimmings is my favorite place for cheap trim they're also on 39th. M+J trimmings is of course worth visting but know they're expensive. Same thing with Mood fabrics, well worth seeing but expensive. -Robin On 3/30/09, Susan Carroll-Clark scarrollcl...@gmail.com wrote: Greetings-- I know this topic comes up from time to time, but I'd love to hear an updated take on it since we all know there is a lot of turnover in the fabric store biz these days. I will be in New York City in mid-May and have set aside a little time for possible fabric shopping. I do medieval (primarily 10th-14th centuries, but dabbling a bit later occasionally) and have it pretty good in Toronto--but am always looking for neat finds--wools, linens, silks, and the like; embroidery supplies if I can find 'em. I'm not adverse to paying for the right fabric but I also love bargains. Where should I be looking? Sounds like Queen St. in Toronto. We've got one of those stores that was going out of business for several years, too. Unfortunately, it finally did recently.
