Sadly there is no free alternative that "just works". The closest I can
think of is FreeWroldDialup with an IAX client. The setup is still 
more complicated and the only well-compressed codec they support is non-free
(g729), apart from the not very well compressed ulaw.

use speakfreely. With some scripting it can be made to work even from a 
url. Default compression is gsm.

Correction: He put a job offer on our list, to the benefit of
Haifuxers. I couldn't care less what software he uses, and neither
should you. Please keep this religous nonsense off this list, and if
you have to express this kind of views, you will find another list more
suitable for that.
