it would be very well if I could get those suggestions to work

the "cat >> etc" didn't seem to do anything and I had to 'vim
~/.gnupg/gpg.conf' in order to add those two lines

then when it came to "gpg --edit-key $KEYID" I can't seem to work out
what is required in place of $KEYID.

I assumed it meant something from my ~/me.pub.asc file but nothing I
enter does anything and even if it did I have no idea if I set it up
with a passphrase or not, something which seems to be required after
doing the setpref command

/me will stick with what I have since I almost never sign anything
these days

[Hampshire] [JOB][ADVERT][SPAMSPAMSPAM] Program Python for actual money! amidoinitrite?

2009-05-07 Thread Daniel Pope
Since everyone is spamming jobs now, I could do with a Django developer
- or someone who could pick that up quickly:

http://www.mauveinternet.co.uk/jobs

I've been looking at offices in and north of Portsmouth, so the fact
that I say "we're based near Chichester" is a bit flexible.

Love and kisses,

Dan

PS. FWIW, 1-2 adverts per person per month sounds like a good way to
slash the signal-to-noise ratio of the list. Members of our community
who relay job postings, while perhaps not actually endorsing anything,
stake their reputation that it's worth our attention. Anyone trying to
do that without a reputation or trust to stake is just a spammer.

The "Key ID". IOW, exactly what is says.

> I assumed it meant something from my ~/me.pub.asc file but nothing I

No, that's an ASCII representation of the key. The key ID can be found
by doing the following at command prompt;

gpg --list-keys

You'll get out put starting something like;

pub 1024D/8B81EB69 2008-09-01 [expires: 2011-09-01]
uid Brad Rogers

The important bit being the first line which tells you;

pub 1024D / 8B81EB69 2008-09-01 [expire]
Public Key; Size & Type / KEYID; Date creation; Expiry date.

That is, the 8 digit Hex number immediately after the "/" is the info
you need.

Adverts like this are IMHO completely different from the ones that were
complained of. There is a hyperlink which one can click or not. And it is a
relevant local job.

Full blown, detailed and more frequent job advertisements are far more
intrusive and annoying. They were certainly irritating me - and you, equally
certainly, are not. And nor did Hugo.

I realise that I may not be typical. Just my 2c worth ;-)

+1

I almost applied to one of the ads (reading) but then saw the same
ad on three other lug lists twice in rapid succession and decided
against it.

[Hampshire] Backup media

2009-05-07 Thread James Courtier-Dutton
Hi,

There is already lots of data regarding backup media like CDs, DVDs, Tapes etc.
The best being off-site network backup to a remote backup facility.

I cannot find anything on usb flash disks.
Does anyone know how long data will last on a usb flash disk if I
store a picture on it, and leave it in a draw. How long before my data
fades?

Kind Regards

James

No reason not to apply for it... unless it's a principled decision to
not 'support' that recruiter?

(My apologies to those of a sensitive disposition for the grossly
mangled grammar above. I realise that the previous line contains
three negatives, a split infinitive, a dubious verb phrase, that it's
not a proper sentence, and ends with an inappropriate question mark.
But heck, it's Thursday ;-)

You also mis-spelt "recritter".

I don't think there is any as the media hasn't been around long enough for
meaningful tests.

I seem to remember magneto-optical media was the best but i don't think
there is anything aimed at the consumer. Last encounter i had with MO was
my syquest drive. Syquest are dead now though.

Maybe someone will know if Jaz drives from iomega that are sold to companies
are MO or something else.

More that you have to be careful who gets your CV.

I have been in my current job for over 15 years and during that time
have looked multiple times with long periods in which I was not looking.
For this reason I only ever give out a CV for a specific vacancy and
get very angry when my CV is put forward for jobs I did not apply for.

After a while you get a feel for who is going to try and spam your CV and
the postings and emails "fit the pattern" - this was enought to put me off.

Thanks Brad, that got me through the first stage, now have to think
about setting up a new 2048 bit key - do I need one for example

By the way I suddenly realised I did know my passphrase after all ;-)

Not immediately, but it's worth thinking about. The following blog
article gives a pretty good "how-to";

http://www.debian-administration.org/users/dkg/weblog/48

Whilst it's on a Debian site, it's not Debian specific. It uses GPG
from the command line, not any Debian specific front-face.

Ah, blessed relief! :-)
