[Hampshire] Alan Turing Apology

2009-09-11 Thread Daniel Pope
Those of you who signed the petition demanding an apology for Alan
Turing may have been e-mailed about this already, but Gordon Brown has
issued an apology.

http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page20571

Reading it I felt it diminished Turing somewhat in that the description
of his meaning to Britain was merely his role in the war effort. The
petition creator wrote it better: Alan Turing was the greatest computer
scientist ever born in Britain. He laid the foundations of computing.

If you haven't, you're still free to add your name to the petition if
you would like to:

Hi folks, long time no post.

I was fiddling around last night and some how managed to reassign sound
mute to the m key. Don't know how I did it and have tried some of the
 Google solutions which don't work.

Running kde on a sarge box.

Any thoughts please on how to toggle off mute?

Without knowing which solutions you've tried, it's possible that it's the
global shortcut in KMix.

To find this, right click on the speaker icon in your taskbar and click Show
mixer window, or run KMix from the menu. From the Settings menu, click
Configure Global Shortcuts and then you can disable or change the toggle mute
shortcut in the list.

Cheers,

You seem surprised... Don't be.

The claims are not unlike those Microsoft has made in the past no, more
identical really.

I think we've started to see the fall of microsoft to be honest, and it's not
because Linux is amazingly good (it's great, don't get me wrong), but it's
because Microsoft is now seen to be lying by more average users, not just
developers.

What do you expect from Microsoft. Love and kisses? They are running
shit scared. Fear and loathing stalk the corridors of Redmond and
they don't have anything they can do other than attack. FUD is there
only weapon. This is just a replay of the Best Buy playbook that we
saw yesterday

M$ will continue with desperate measures to try and hold on to its
monopoly. Its business model is now faltering because most people and
businesses just need XP as a platform to run applications. Therefore
they now have nothing new to sell. Vista was a disaster and Windows 7
will not make up for this. Linux has played a part in this, but the
reality is M$ is to blame and Linux will continue to benefit and
increase its market share. Bill Gates did a Tony Blair; he both got out
while the going was good ;-)
