Re: [Hampshire] Surrey LUG Bring-a-box meeting: 13th April 2013, Sirus Corporation, Addlestone

2013-04-13 Thread Robert Longstaff
Hello. Just wanted to thank Andrew for hosting us this month and for
Igor, Sam and Alan for their talks - they were very well received.

We had a great meeting with a very good turn-out, including a couple of
newbies who told me they enjoyed it and planned to attend more!

See you again next month at RedHat in Farnborough. However, I hope to
sort out a pub meet towards the end of this month before that.

Re: [Hampshire] Free to a good home

2013-04-13 Thread Benjie Gillam
Any hardware and books that aren't wanted by others would probably be welcomed
by Southampton Makerspace[1]; we can't promise to be a good home but it's
better than sending them to the dump. If we can't find a use for them directly
(for their intended purpose) then we'll try and take them apart and make use of
their juicy innards - motors, lasers, voltage regulators, connectors, buttons,
etc.

Plus it'd be nice for is to start a bit of a mini technical library...

We're generally not so interested in software though.

Of course offer them to HantsLUG/Freecycle members first; but if there's no
takers (and you'll just trash it otherwise) then drop an email to
donati...@somakeit.org.uk :)

Cheers,

Benjie.

[1]: http://somakeit.org.uk/ So Make It is a not for profit Makerspace, hosting
both SoutHACKton (hardware hacking/electronics) and So RepRap (3D Printing),
plus hopefully many more groups to come. We only opened 2 weeks ago!

It wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to claim back the Windows

to gain little more than a moral victory after paying for fully
insured shipping, and therefore decided to leave Windows 7 where it
was, which was just as well as it actually turned out to be useful for
a couple of things in the end.

Anyway, I'm rambling now! Does anyone have any experience of such
things that they would care to share?

Sean

I recently purchased a new HP PC for work (not my choice I was told that
the one I had to order) and was concerned about it being Windows 8, my
supplier said that it comes with Windows 7 installed and discs for
windows 8, he also mentioned that many of the HP range of PC's and
laptops for business are currently setup that way. Maybe if you can find
a business supplier of HP and purchase one that way??

2013-04-13 Thread Richard Bensley
I think you should check out novatech, who are local and much more
forgiving with what you do or don't install.

Plus, they are much more likely to know which laptops can have Linux
installed without any secureboot fuss. The price is also cheaper if you buy
without an OS installed, so you can just turn it on and load Linux onto a
blank machine.

http://www.novatech.co.uk/

They even have a Linux section in their support forum:

Re: [Hampshire] Windows 8 + Dual Booting

2013-04-13 Thread Tim Brocklehurst
Make sure you get the install discs for Win 8, then you should be able to
install it in whatever partition size you wish.

Alternatively, E-buyer have a number of laptops shipping with windows 7 here:

Good luck,

I am continuing my clearout and if anyone is interested in any of this ancient
kit they are more than welcome. I'd prefer it to go in single lots (Mac and PC)
although the scanner could be an either or! Worded pretty much as per my
Freecycle / Freegle post there is:

I have a selection of old PC bits to clear, mainly as parts for an enthusiast I
should imagine.

Software:
Pagis Pro 2

Parts:

Mice
PCI & AGP graphics cards

I also have an Epson SCSI flatbed scanner with slide adapter, although you will
need your own SCSI card and cable for it.

I have a selection of old (pre-OSX) Apple bits to get rid of that would suit a
