Re: [Hampshire] worst distro name (was - Hmmm.....)

2010-04-30 Thread Benjamin Ashton
I was delighted and amazed with all the responses to my plea for help - thanks
- and how it in-turn lead to a discussions about the silliest distro name.

So here's my take on Zenwalk:

Zen is about authenticity and simplicity.  Since Zenwalk is based on Slackware
(authenticity (?)), but having only one application per task (simplicity), then
I think that Zenwalk is a very appropriate name.

... of course it could just be called that because it sounds funky!

Ben

P.S.  Now getting used how it works and still really enjoying the speed.

The Wasp T12 Spodtool Full Spectrum OS Domination

It would be well weapon.

Naming discussions are off to a bad start as soon as we mention
Linux. :)

I always thought VMS had a good ring to it. OS/360, VM. Acronyms!

2010-04-26 Thread Stephen Davies
At least VMS meant something.

Virtual Memory System

Before that (on PDP-11's) there was

RSTS - Resource Time Sharing System
RT-11 - Real time 1.5kb Kernel!
RSX (-11A -11B -11C -11D -11M -11S -11M/Plus) - Resource Sharing
eXecutive (IIRC)
Very few outside of DEC would have come upon -11A, B or C.
-11S was a memory only O/S. You could load it from DecTape

Then on Dec-10/20's there was TOPS
Can't remember what that one was.

Quiz for those old enough to remember.
12704
00100
12703
00200
60304

What is the answer (in Decimal Please) and how could it be simplified.

I guess that's PDP-11 machine code. I use to be able to read that straight
off, but that was a long time ago. I think I still have a programming card
around here somewhere. If my memory serves me right it's loading 64
into R4 and 128 into R3. I'm guessing the last instruction is add R3 and R4
but it might be a subtract. So the answer is probably 192.

I think TOPS stood for Timesharing Operating System. I never used it, but
I used RSX-11D and RSX-11M+ at various times

I never said I knew what a good Distro should be, I currently run Simply Mepis,
which is so named by the developer Warren Woodford due to a misunderstanding
over a bad skype connection. Somebody suggested that window was a bad name, but
looking back at where is came from the days of a single application running on
the entire desktop to being able to see multiple application running in
convenience little windows, it an obvious choice. The fact that Windows is
badly coded propriotory software does not mean it has a stupid name.
