It's an inevitable consequence of time passing; There's far more info
available on the 'net now than ten or twenty years ago. Far more people
connected, too. Of course, some of that info may no longer be relevant.
Be that as it may, it is therefore, possible to get a fair amount of
advice by a simple search. IOW, there's often no need to wait for an
answer - it's almost there waiting for you.

We use a Brother DCP 1610W and couldn't be happier. Costs the double of
the cheap ink all  in ones, but I haven't changed the toner in 2 years.
If you don't need colour, I would highly suggest this one.

Not a cheap printer to buy (though bizarrely we had a buy one get one

stationery pagewide head, it prints as fast as it can feed the paper

I know there was a time when HP silently blocked the possibility of using
non-HP cartridges, but that decision was soon reversed after a *massive*
outcry (no doubt followed by a downturn in sales) from pretty much all

When we had grief with an HP OfficeJet 8100 printer throwing a wobbly
with non OEM cartridges, we replaced it with a Canon TR8550
multi-function printer - we're using cartridges from Ink Factory and the
printer is happy with them. That works fine with both my Linux Mint
desktop (and laptop) and my wife's Windows 10 desktop - it's connected
over the wired network in our house.

BTW, I also have a Canon Pixma 7250 (inkjet printer only, USB & WiFi
connections) going spare - a friend moved flats and decided she wanted
to replace her desktop PC (running Linux Mint...) with a tablet, and
despite nudging from me (I set the printer up so she could print from
her tablet) she turned out the printer as well. If you're interested,
contact me off list and we'll see if we can arrange a transfer. I live
in Newbury.

I've got a Xerox Phaser 8560DN. It's both duplex and colour.
Takes a while to warm up, but quality is good (and it was the
cheapest colour duplex laser I could find when I got it a few

alternatives).

And yes, it does network (and works from CUPS).
I confirm all the the above re the 8560DN. I does have one drawback
that I haven't been able to find a solution to, that being, the colour
is very muddy. Shifted towards the inside of the colour cube. I can't
get bright reds or yellows. They are just dull, dull, dull and I can't
find any discussion regarding this problem on the net. I guess I
haven't stumbled across the correct magic phrase.

YMMV

I can second that - I use Brother HL-5270DN, which does PostScript
emulation and duplex printing. Bought it through Amazon; the only small
wrinkle is that it came from France, but they supplied a UK mains lead
for it as well as the continental one.

Re: [Hampshire] Printers

2010-07-16 Thread Paul Stimpson
Hi,

I've used the HP Laserjet 4300n (and 4200n - the same but a little slower) and
they are excellent devices. They are fairly compact and modular so you buy the
bits you need (duplexer, paper trays, stapler/stacker, trolley...) If you can
find one there are preloaded ones where the model numbers end "dn" (Duplex +
Network) and "dtn" (Duplex + jumbo 2nd paper Tray + Network) that come with the
options pre-installed.

The base printer with just network and no options was originally over £1000 and
they do something like 18000 pages from a cartridge (chipped). They are rated
at something like 30,000 pages a month and you can pick ex-lease ones up (that
have only done something like 25,000 pages total and have a half full
cartridge) on eBay for a couple of hundred pounds. I've seen the duplexer and
the jumbo 2nd paper tray on eBay too. If you find one without the "n" (no
network) then the Jetdirect Ethernet module is also available as a self-install
option on eBay.

I've not had one to try yet but the Samsung colour lasers seem to have duplex
and Ethernet and seem to be penguin-friendly.

Cheers,
Paul.

Re: [Hampshire] Printers

2009-08-29 Thread Stephen Davies
I've used several Kyocera FS series printers from Linux.
I currently use a Samsung CL350 Colour Laser and an Epson 2100 Inkjet.

As an aside, the Linux Cups driver for the 2100 has more features that
the one shipped with OS/X which is ironic as Apple is the Cups
maintainer. I can print panoramas 5ft long on 8in wide paper from Linux
whereas both Windows & OSX fail miserable.

I'd avoid Lexmark printers though. The (AFAIK) specifically do not
support any operation from Linux even if it is over a LAN.

Hi,

I've used the following:

* HP Laserjet 4000n
* HP Laserjet 4200n
* HP Laserjet 4300n
* HP Deskjet 895Cxi
* HP 1310 multifunction **
* HP Color Laserjet 2820  **
* HP Color Laserjet 5500
* HP Color Laserjet 8550
* Samsung ML1750
* Xerox Workcentre Pro 40 ***
* Xerox Workcentre 7345

** I have also successfully scanned with these.
*** No driver for it but the Pro 128 driver seemed to work fine.
 The Linux driver can't control the finisher so the stapler doesn't
work.

All of these printers have worked out the box.

The guy down in our print room (an employee of Xerox on contract) says
that he considers the build quality of the small Xeroxes to be
comparable to the big ones and that he would buy them for home even
though he doesn't get employee discount. He commented that HP running
costs are much higher than Xerox per page.

I always regard HP as a safe bet. Epson are very much "in" with the OSS
community too.

I was going to suggest looking into the new Kodak ESP series printers
(cheap ink that doesn't fade) but an initial Google seems to suggest
that they're boat-anchors when it comes to Linux.

Cheers,
Paul.

I only require b&w printing so got a Kyocera FS-1100 laser printer with
network interface, it works fine with cups and a downloaded
kyocera.ppd. No problems printing from Debian or XP systems on our
home network.

It is listed in the openprinting.org/printer_list so knew I was safe in
getting one.

I have tried to install Canons that other people already owned. The
experience can best be summed up with "Ouch!"

In addition to HPLIP which Al mentioned, there is also hpijs. Those two with
CUPS make using most HPs child's play.

I have also had success with Samsungs. I myself have an ML1510 and I have
installed more recent models for other people. Samsung supplies Linux
drivers, but I have found the ones that come with CUPS more satisfactory.

I have a 6310 which is a printer/scanner/copier/fax and it "Just
Works". Plugged it in and the drivers for the printer were already
installed and ready to print before I'd sat down and put paper in it.
There's also a tool called HPLIP which lets you know ink levels and so
on, so it works much like it would on windows, but without the crappy
bloated HP mess that they call a driver.

Cheers,
Al.

Thank you for the quick come back. It appears as though the Canon I was
looking at is probably not the best choice so now I'm thinking a HP
Deskjet 6940 (although it appears to have been around a while!).

I have a Brother HL-5270DN - Postscript emulation, automatic
double-sided printing and an Ethernet interface - works fine on my home
network with both Ubuntu and Windoze machines.
