[HCDX] Radio at sea

2003-02-12 Thread Chris Brand

In April my sister-in-law is
crossing the Atlantic aboard a container-ship,from the UK to
Montreal. She's taking a portable sw receiver, and I'll be arming her
with schedulesand guides.Does anyone know about, or have experience
of, radio reception at sea? Iassume short wave and medium wave will be
little different from listening onland, and listening in the bowels of an
iron ship might be similar tolistening in an apartment block built of iron
girders, albeit on the move? Will there be a point, mid-Atlantic, where
European and American medium wavesignals are likely to be of similar
strength, depending on day/night paths? The whole idea of radio and DXing
at sea is a new one to me and I amintrigued as to what might be expected. I
am also tempted to stowaway; aweek at sea with little to do but listen to
the radio sounds as good as itgets!Chrischris brand, hale,

Re: [HCDX] 4050 Hit Shortwave gospel music

2003-02-12 Thread Zacharias Liangas
Hello

Here is a report to Glenn Hauser several days ago
---

A few days ago , Mauno Ritola sent me an MP3 recording from 4050( Hit
Shortwave) on 18.04 onwards on 25.1.3 asking me if someone from our students
know Dari.
As there is a Farsi student, I transferred Mauno s MP3 recording into tape and gave
together with my walkman. The guy together with his Kalash friend have responded as
follows:
-Language is 100% Farsi, what I suspected listening to it . It is NOT Dari ( I
insisted for it)
-Programming was religious sponsored by an organisation in Philadelphia USA. Surely
protestant .
- Not ID has been found from the 25 min recording neither the name of the
organisation

Hope that this can demystify the programming

[HCDX] Help with spanish Ident??

2003-02-12 Thread J999w
Is there anyone fairly fluent with spanish that can listen to this audio file
and help me with the ident??

http://members.aol.com/j999w/DX/580khz_unknown.wav

It's 49 seconds (393k, 8bit, 8k, mono .wav file) taken from a 2 hour tape
session last night. Time was approx. 0800z. Consists of the end of a rapid
fire news report into full ident that sounds like " La Exterior
...??...estantola" I cleaned up the noise as best I could.

Heard with a Kenwood R1000 and 3' box loop from Milwaukee, WI.

THANKS !

[HCDX] News about 549kHz AM from Ireland

2003-02-12 Thread Christopher McCallion
All independent Irish re-broadcasts of UCB and Cross
Rhythms are to end -possibly within months.

Irish Christian Broadcasters (ICB) who are responsible
for retransmitting various UK Christian radio stations
such as UCB and Cross Rhythms in Ireland, have decided
to permanently cease such re-broadcasts. They are now
in the process of building their own high-tech studios
and hope to be able to put their own programmes on air
24 hours a day as soon as possible (-it is possible
however that ICB may purchase some programming from UK
broadcasters once licenced). The new station will be
similar to the UCB network in it's format (but still
independent) though based in Ireland and purely for
and about Ireland. Two radio stations are planned: The
first one will be a family Christian radio station
similar to the old UCB Europe, consisting of Adult
Contemporary Christian Music/Christian Inspirational
music especially that originating from Irish artists,
coverage of Irish Christian events and activities,
plus Christian news, information, encouragement and
teaching with a particular focus on that from the
Irish churches. The second station will be Ireland's
own answer to Cross Rhythms in the UK.

ICB know the potential legal problems that these
relays cause for the Christian radio stations in the
UK that they re-broadcast and they are committed to
replacing these re-broadcasts with their own
programming as soon as it is financially and
practically possible to do so. It is also now clear
that they would need to do this in order to have any
hope of obtaining any sort of terrestrial licence in
Ireland.

For more information about these broadcasts click this
link to this BRAND NEW official website- as you will
see it is NOT UCB who run it nor will UCB, Cross
Rhythms or Transworld Radio continue to be
re-broadcast via these frequencies for any longer than
the short term:

http://www.gracefellowship.ie/icb.htm

The 50 kW 549kHz AM transmitter is situated in
Northern Co. Monaghan, Ireland. When on full power,
the daytime signal can reach the whole of Ireland and
the western half of Britain with reasonable reception
also across most of the English Midlands as far east
as Leicester.

A friend of Christian radio in Ireland.

[HCDX] Status of Radio Illimani, Bolivia

2003-02-12 Thread Don Moore
A news article tells of riots in downtown La Paz. Several large government
buildings in the center of La Paz have been abandoned to rioters. The
government broadcaster, Radio Illimani, was located in one of those buildings
when I visited them in 1985, and they were still there a few years ago...
probably still are. The article is at

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=589&e=5&u=/ap/20030213/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/bolivia_police_mutiny

If that direct link is broken and does not work, try this index link

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=index2&cid=734

Such violence is not new to central La Paz. I remember that a block away from
Radio Illimani and in front of the presidential palace was a 1940s style
lamppost that merited a 24 hour military guard. In 1947, rioters drug the
country's then dictator out of the presidential palace and lynched him from
that lamppost. From what I've read, he probably deserved what he got, but the
Bolivian army didn't take it too well, so the lamppost became a shrine. The
presidential palace is called the "Palacio Quemado", or "Burnt Palace" for what
should be obvious reasons. During the successful 1952 revolution, Radio
Illimani was quickly captured and became the rebels' communications center as
fighting continued just two blocks away for three more days. For more on the
often violent history of Bolivian radio, see my article
"Bolivia: Radio Under the Gun" at

Medium wave could be quite different. Some magnificent ground wave in the
daytime, and rather like a coastal Beverage antenna DXpedition at night,
based on my experiences 1000 km. offshore in the North Pacific on several
occasions. BUT this was with a decent outside antenna (I was lucky enough
to use an 8m high vertical, matching transformer and coax lead in). Inside
a ship there is a big problem with using a radio with an internal antenna ,
as there will be large signal attenuation from all the iron and large
amounts of local electrical noise. Holding such a radio up to a porthole
might help some.

On a container ship with few passengers, she will likely get to know the
crew members who work on the bridge. They may be sympathetic to letting her
listen on the bridge's HF radio, if they have one, depending on how
important they regard monitoring 2182 kHz.

Hope it works out.

best wishes,

Nick
