In any event one of the english-speaking station was probably WOMG in Detroit, MI like other WTFDA`ers reported (I have no way to proove it at all though) and the FF station may have been CHGO in Val d`Or wich was widely heard in Ontario and New England. (Chiochiu-P-QC) Your country station is almost certainly WFRG Utica, the most powerful FM signal in central New York. The oldies was likely WOMC (not WOMG); "LaSalle" is a common place name in southeast Michigan, which was settled by the French (where d'ya think "Detroit" came from?) before the English ever showed up there... s ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] South Korea Foils Airlift of Radios to North
>From today's New York Times.. The article doesn't mention what brand of radio, or whether the radios they attempted to airlift covered AM FM, and SW. South Korea Foils Airlift of Radios to North By JAMES BROOKE HOLWON, South Korea, Aug. 22 - All in all, it was a perfect day for breaking North Korea's information monopoly, and Dr. Norbert Vollertsen and his band of volunteers were determined to take advantage of it. A brisk wind from the south was driving clouds and, Dr. Vollertsen hoped, large balloons carrying transistor radios north over the barbed wire of the demilitarized zone into North Korea, a country closed off from the rest of the world. But before the specially designed cargo balloons could be inflated with helium, South Korean police officers clambered aboard the truck and subdued Dr. Vollertsen, who is German, so roughly that he needed medical treatment. "The law requires that organizers of rallies or demonstrations notify the local police 48 hours in advance," said Kim Bu Wook, Kangwon Province's police chief.. This was before a two-hour standoff degenerated into a shoving match between riot policemen and members of a growing international movement to break the half-century information monopoly that North Korea's Communist government has maintained over its 22 million people. Until 2000, South Korea's military sent thousands of balloons north from border towns like this one, usually in the summer when the prevailing winds were favorable. But under the so-called sunshine policy of reconciliation, South Korea has tried to avoid irritating North Korea. By blocking the private efforts to distribute radios, however, South Korea has placed itself on a collision course with Washington. Over the summer, both chambers of the United States Congress voted overwhelmingly to expand the daily Korean-language broadcasting of Radio Free Asia to 24 hours from 4 hours. By law North Koreans are allowed to have only radios and televisions that are locked onto the state frequencies. Residents with illegal tuneable sets can listen to Korean-language government broadcasts from China, Russia and South Korea, a Christian group in South Korea, and two stations financed by the United States government, Radio Free Asia and Voice of America. But few North Koreans have access to normal radios and televisions, and North Korean defectors say that information controls in North Korea are far tighter than they were in Eastern Europe under the Communists. South Korean officials said earlier this week that they would allow the balloon launchings to go ahead. But the government apparently reversed that decision to avoid provoking North Korea in anticipation of six-country negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program, scheduled to start in Beijing on Wednesday. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/23/international/asia/23KORE.html 73 Mike Brooker Toronto, ON ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Fw: RCA RP-3710 Digital AM/FM Radio For $18.49
As promised I put the RCA RP-3710 digital AM/FM clock radio through the DX grinder last night. First of all sensitivity with the internal loop stick is surprisingly good, with very deep nulling possible off the ends of the loopstick. Selectivity is also very good. I tuned to the local 5 kw pest on 910 kc a few miles away and there was no splatter on 900 or 920 kc, I was amazed. With the internal loopstick antenna I was able to null out WBBR NYC and WWBR Bartow, FL on 1130kc and hear KWKC in Shreveport, LA. in the clear. I'm not interested in FM DX so only checked local stations and all is okay there and sound is very good on AM and FM from the tiny front mounted speaker. As it's meant to be an alarm clock first, there is no external antenna input or audio output for headphones. Also no provision for battery operation but it does have 9 volt battery back up for time and memories. The digital frequency readout is LCD and approximately 1" high, which is easy on my eyes as I'm half blind in one eye and deaf in the other? It also has a backlit display that is adjustable for brightness and 11 memories for AM and 11 for FM. It makes one wonder why RCA could put digital readout in an under $19 clock radio but GE could not do the same on it's Super Radio's I, II and III. I also put the radio it on the 2 foot box loop and man did it ever come alive for stateside DX, when I tuned for resonance via inductive coupling. It heard everything that my FT-840 and 130 foot inverted L did, including KOA 850 kc at times through the fading and blanketing auroral conditions. By the dimensions are 5 1/2" wide, 4" tall and 3" deep. See included photo. http://www.kn4lf.com/rcaradio.jpg 73, Thomas F. [HCDX] KN4LF Daily HF/MF Radio Propagation Outlook #2003-03
KN4LF Daily HF/MF Radio Propagation Outlook #2003-03 http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf5.htm Date Format is YY/MM/DD Published 1400 UTC 03/08/24 PAST 24 HOUR SOLAR, SPACE WEATHER AND GEOMAGNETIC INDICES- Coronal Hole #052 has been in a geo-effective (Earth facing) position since 03/08/21. It's high speed solar wind stream is the source of our ongoing geo-magnetic storm but it's influence continues to weaken and should end on 03/08/25. After a seemingly endless parade of geo-effective Coronal Holes in recent months, which is a normal occurrence on the down side of a solar cycle, Coronal Hole #053 located in the Sun's southern hemisphere may not become geo-effective (Earth facing). If this verifies and we do not experience any unexpected geo-effective solar flares and attendant Coronal Mass Ejections (CME's) or Elevated Energetic Proton Flux events of >10 MeV (10+o), we should see some improvement in propagation conditions in the short term. The Ap index has been at severe geomagnetic storm levels, with a peak at 107. A previous 24 hour Ap index under 10 is good, under 7 for 72 hours consecutively is best for good high and latitude MF propagation conditions. The Kp index has been at strong geomagnetic levels, with a peak at 7. Re: [HCDX] A question about Radio Marti
I`m not kidding at all. I know "I" can hear them often even with the telescopic antenna unextended at all into it`s socket on the Sangean 606 witht excellent strenghts. But it isn`t the same way in Europe. I only heard once some Spanish on 6.03 MHz using the Umea`s Web-controlled shortwave receiver in Swden and it was weak and with quie some QRM and not enough to ID it. If you are interesed in using this great web-controlled receiver (you select a frequency and listen to it as it is heard in Umea, Sweden and you DX on the Net !), just go to http://194.165.225.6/sfors/. This web-controlled rx web-site has also a chat where you can talk about DX strategies, targets, music, pets, or any other subject while listening to the radio, with the other users. About 1 year and a half before I started DX`ing, I was amazed by people I tought were from another planet, that were from Sweden as well, from Uk, SPain, Finland and other European countries that told me they heard my local CKAC Radio Média on 730 kHz and other Quebec stations, New-Foundland stations like VOCM as well as WABC and CHRQ from Alberta on 770 and Radio Vibracion 1470 from Venezuela. At that my furthest MW catche was WSB in Atlanta, GA on 750 and I tought anything further than Atlanta such as Savannah in SOUTHERN Georgia, Florida, Latin America, Europe et al was impossible on MW because the ionospheric absorptions were too high, compared to shortwave. How wrong I was ! This site teached to me a lot about MW and SW DX`ing too (there were some people tuning to SW pirates and tropical bands broadcasters, at that time I thinked SW was merely for the international broadcasters because in Romania when I was a little child in the appartaments with concrete ceilings and walls with radios that had mostly extremely simple antennas - our main shortwave radio at my parents house about 10 years ago when I listened to Radio Free Europe, the BBC and things like that, was connceted to just a random wire in strunggled along the library in our living room, so you can imagine major international broadacsters was all I could hear). And at that time, I didn`t even know how DX-unfriendly were the concrete buildings. Well back to Radio Marti, you can try to get it at your home too. However, I`m not kidding: here in Montreal I get them even with the telescopic whip at minimum ito the socket, but in Europe they seem to be, at most, very weak, if it was really them (the PWBR also list a religious domestic Chilean broadcaster on 6029.6 kHz, Radio Santa Maria wich I even very tentatively received here during the Radio Marti Monday Morning "silent period"). While here in Montreal they are often extremely strong, I`m sure in Europe they would be a nice DX catche ! Especially considering that 6030 is used, in the morning at 6AM Romanian time in the winter by Radio Free Europe, so at the best time for hearing Radio Marti on 6030 kHz in Europe due to sunrise enhancement at the receiver end there is intense RFL co-channel QRM. I also wonder if the cuban jammers can be picked up on a regular basis in Europe. Regards, 73 and good DX ! Bogdan ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! Yes.Radio Japan on 6110 KHz is a relay transmission from Radio Canada's Sackville transmitters. Someone must not have thrown the swtiches to cut the other part of the transmission off. [HCDX] 2 NEW Radio Sawa logs !!
Hello to all of you ! This afternoon I managed to re-install the long-wire in our own back-yard wich I didn`t manage to do since I returned from the summer camp near Quebec City were my Sanyo radio broked (I taked it instead on our travels to New-Bruntswick and Île-Bizard) and managed to pull in this while sitting on our table in the back-yard, on the patio: 12010 PHILLIPINES, Radio Sawa via VOA AUG 24 2137-2154 - playing "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by New Kids on the Block from 1988 followed by a jingle featuring short bits of AA and international pops with mention of "Arabia Saudia", followed by an Arabic pop tune, then "Sawa" jingle followed by Jennifer Lopez - Glad, then Radio Sawa jingle followed by nx, then Arabic pops presented by a male announcer. Fair to very good reception, //12040 wich had only poor-fair reception. Both NEW ! (Chiochiu-QC) 12050 EGYPT, Egyptian Radiom, Kafr Silîm-Abis AUG 24 2155 - Only PRESUMED ! (darn I could have gotten an ID if that stupid Sangean with it`s weak batteries didn`t turned off) with traditionnal AA song followed by apparent nx. Didn`t even know if they had pips and ID at the top of the hour. Very, very good reception and would have been new for me. (Chiochiu-QC) Bogdan Alexandru Chiochiu Sangean 606 rx w/long-wire antenna in the back-yard, DX`ing from a table on our patio I did read in the IDXD bulletin of NRC that Radio Sawa is a radio station run by the Americans in Iraq who program a mixture of new Arabic pop songs and modern international pop music, like Jennifer Lopez, but I didn`t believe I will hear them someday. My Sangean 606 is really sensitive and selectif on SW, unlike my first SW radio I did got as a gift for my 13 years in 2000, a poor Realistic DX-351 multi-band radio wich aside from not having good gain at all for receptions of SW broadacsters below the "good" level of signal, had the selectivity so poor, that I sometimes thought I did not even had a filter. It also overloaded very easily on the extremely strong major international broadcast signal like the VOA. I also noted Medi Un on 9575 with traditionnal Arabic music at good level with moderate splatter from Africa Numéro Un on 9580 at around 2132 UTC before I came accros the Radio Sawa outlets. And before DX`ing Medi Un, I heard tentatively the Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran on 11885 and CHU on both 3330 and 7335 with poor to fair signals, so they are back to full-power. Unfortunatly, I can`t DX anymore now because all the batteries we have are weak and the sound on my Sangean is distortionated and often it witches off by it`s self with a reverse 3 message (E) for Error and I can`t turned it on for minutes in a row. This is sad, because I found a power supply on our patio where I connected a portable radio with microphone tape recorder and managed to record a very little bit of the 12010 Radio Sawa program until the radio switched off by it`s self ! I also managed to record a traditionnal Arabic tune from presumably Egyptian Radio on 12050, but the Sangean 606 switched off toward the end of the song and now just a song out of nowhere doesn`t make any sense on a tape that absolutely need to contain station IDs from the signals I hear.
