[HCDX] Re: Special Swedish MW Event on 15 January

2004-01-13 Thread Juha Solasaari
Earlier was announced that the time is 1730 UTC for the presentation,
and 1800 UTC for the historical rebroadcast (18:30 and 19:00,
respectively, according to the Swedish time, as still is at
http://www.scandiham.com/).
Now the new times given are one hour earlier. Which one is right?
Local time in Sweden used to be UTC + 1 h. (Summer: UTC + 2 h).

[HCDX] About HCDX Online Log

2004-01-13 Thread Jari Savolainen
Hi Risto, Online Log looks fine.
There is one thing I'd like to be discussed. I don't want to
be a "log cop", but sometimes it is annoying to see a
logging, which most probably is not correct.
Let's take an IMAGINARY example:
I see a logging

4567 Jan 5 2100-2200 Zambia: R Flatlands. New station on
new frequency. Many ID's. MisterX

But I have just seen a website, promoting new R Atlantis
in Gambia on 4567. How can I gently tell MisterX to check his
logging. I don't know who he is or what's his e-mail. Do I put
a "non-log" (as I haven't heard the station myself) to the
online-log on 4567, telling there is this kind of station. Or send
a message to the list, hoping MisterX notices it.
Is there a "post a comment" feature in Online Log for commenting
someone else's logs. Same thing with the UNID loggings.

This is just a small thing, but I hope there's an easy solution.

[HCDX] Re: Qinghai PBS 4750 EE id

2004-01-13 Thread Jari Savolainen
After my first logging (see below) I monitored 4750 almost daily
around 1400-1430 to see if I could get this English ID again. But
the cx has been rather poor. Today 13 Jan their signal improved
a bit and at 1359 UT there was again a female with English id.
It was no armchair reception, but I managed to hear what sounded
like "Qinghai Broadcasting Station" then possibly list of frequencies.
The one I mentioned earlier as 4150 might as well be said as 4950,
but doesn't sound like 4750. Maybe someone with good reception
of this one could confirm the ID. At my location there is at times
severe Russian SSB traffic on the channel, blocking it totally.
There is also a growling carrier on 4750, which at times I believe
gives some audio, but cannot tell the language.

Re: [HCDX] About HCDX Online Log

2004-01-13 Thread Risto Kotalampi
Jari,

Thank you for the feedback. This is greatly appreciated!

I've added your suggestion to the roadmap for the next version 1.1. We
already have everyone's email address in the users table so implementing
this shouldn't be too difficult. Ie. you can open a dialogue box and the
system will send an email to the user (and keep the real email address
hidden).

The other major enhancement in the next version will be user profiles.
With user profiles we will be able to save everyone's QTH, receiver,
antenna etc. Then, everyone will be able to check where the logging has
been made. Also, with user preferences you will be able to customize the
output of your user experience as you wish. You will be able to:

   * choose the log format you want to use. The current log format is
called "clusive" but I'd like to hear what other formats you would
like to be able to choose.
   * choose the date format (European/American)
   * choose colors
   * etc (ideas welcome!)
73!

[HCDX] Once more about HCDX Online Log

2004-01-13 Thread Jari Savolainen
Risto, thanks for your reply to my comments.
One more thing about the logger's names.
I just can't see why a person, loggng a station
to Online Log, doesn't use his real name/QTH.
Well, in some countries this may be a political
reason, but I guess rarely among the HCDX people.
It's so much easier to read a logging when you see
who's behind it and where he or she is located.
Guess that's enough nagging for today :)

[HCDX] MW DX Equip Advice

2004-01-13 Thread Jay Heyl
I've lately found myself becoming more interested in MW BCB DXing. I have
several radios that do okay for casual use, but I'm looking for something a bit
more serious. On the low end there is frequent mention of the GE Superadio
(which I have) and the CCRadio (which I also have), and I've seen a few
mentions of the newer Tecsun BCL-2000 as a fairly serious contender in this
price range. All of these radios are typically described as pretty decent for
casual use, but not really sensitive enough for true DXing. On the other end
of the spectrum I've seen the Drake R8B described as being one of the better
choices for BCB DXing (in addition to just about any other kind of AM DXing).
Does anyone know of a currently produced radio that would perform better than
the low end models but cost a bit less than the R8B?

I've seen the Lowe HF-150 mentioned as an excellent BCB DX machine, but it's
out of production and I haven't seen any used ones advertised recently. (Though
I may not be looking in the right places.)

I'm aware that the radio is just part of the overall equation. For the moment,
though, that's the part I'd like to address. Any input on this topic will be
greatly appreciated.
