[HCDX] 945 kHz - question

2005-01-27 Thread Hans-Dieter Buschau
Dear Friends,

This afternoon I observed the frequency
of 945 kHz.

Strongest stations were Toulouse/France
and a Romanian station.

I also heard a station with old German
hit songs. Do you think this could have
been Radio Nord from Latvia?
I only heard one announcement, sounding
like Taiwa Music..., at 15.00 UTC this
station had no news, the music went on.

Thanks for your assistance.

[HCDX] new QSL: Nis 711

2005-01-27 Thread Hans-Dieter Buschau
Hello,

Yesterday I received a kind e-mail QSL
written in English for a 2002 report on
711 kHz from Radio Nis, Serbia Montenegro.

v/s is Maria Burgic

She writes that they had well received
my snail mail letter... (which, however,
remained unanswered). And they were quite
pleased about it.

Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

At present I can't hear Nis at all.
A Romanian station covers the frequency
completely when directed my antenna toward
Eastern Europe.

[HCDX] Former VOA Bethany site in urgent need of repair

2005-01-27 Thread Mike Terry
An article in the Cincinnati Enquirer says that the former VOA Voice of
America Bethany Relay Station is in urgent need of repair, and to help save
the building Ohio lawmakers are considering a $275,000 grant. That money
would be combined with locally generated dollars to match a requested
$625,000 Save America's Treasures federal grant. The total $1.2 million
would be spent on electrical, heating and structural work on the building,
which houses the Gray History of Wireless Museum, the Media Heritage
broadcasting collection and township park offices.

[HCDX] ABU-HFC to tackle shortwave broadcast interference

2005-01-27 Thread Mike Terry
Around 40 frequency managers of 18 shortwave broadcasters have converged in
Kuala Lumpur since Monday for an Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)
conference on reducing interference to shortwave services. The first two
days of the 2005 Coordination Conference of the ABU Shortwave Coordination
Group, ABU-HFC, saw significant success achieved towards this end. The
conference hopes to address frequency channel requirements for more than
6,700 daily shortwave broadcasts by using coordination methods and complex
software tools.

The recent tsunami calamity has underscored the critical importance of
shortwave radio in bringing disaster warnings and new of relief efforts to
the affected population, and the need to keep it free from interference. The
ABU-HFC Steering Committee also met on Monday and made some crucial
decisions on the functions of the group.

[HCDX] Radio Sweden - We're back (I hope)...

2005-01-27 Thread Mike Terry
Hopefully this marks the resumption of MediaScan. I had to stop for several
reasons. First of all, I was away on vacation for 6 weeks, and it was hard
to get going again. Then, I got put in charge of Radio Sweden's transition
to a new web content management system, and was told to put MediaScan aside.

Later, when it turned out that I did have some spare time in the new
assignment, the English Service expressed interested in continuing
MediaScan. But after a computer crash, I couldn't get my Radio Userland blog
software to work right. I've now switched to another system, Blogdrive. It
lacks many of the features of Radio Userland, but does allow me to post from
anywhere. I could only get Userland to work on a computer and home, and not
behind the firewall at Sveriges Radio.

I'm note sure how often I will publish, or whether I will publish a lengthy
bulletin or blogs. The latter is easier, but others (especially Andy at
Radio Netherlands) do that well. I am gratififed that a few people have
asked if MediaScan is still alive. That indicates some interest, so I will
try to get something here on a regular basis. Besides, it's a great URL and
deserves content!

[HCDX] Sirius and XM Satellite Radio rumoured to be in merger talks

2005-01-27 Thread Mike Terry
Wednesday, January 26, 2005

According to the New York Post, quoting several sources, Sirius Satellite
Radio and XM Satellite Radio are holding preliminary talks on a possible
merger. Although this would create a monopoly in the satellite radio
industry, the two companies are understood to be hoping a deal would be
allowed if the Federal Communications Commission considers satellite radio
as part of a broader industry delivering music and other content through
mobile devices, such as cellphones.
