[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs November 25-26-27, 2015

2015-11-27 Thread Glenn Hauser via Hard-Core-DX
** FRANCE. 9675, Wed Nov 25 at 0642, [date correct: overlooked in previous
report] RFI English is fair, with a trace of CCI, presumably China since this
is not its Tuesday siesta; unusual now for this sole RFI English hour direct to
be audible at all. My previous comment about their being ``clueless`` reached
Susan Owensby who fired back at me, but then a friendly exchange explaining
that her parents were both from Muskogee, so that could explain it. She is now
aware of DXLD for info about RFI transmissions which the staff may not be
officially informed about by management. Her next `Sound Kitchen` presumably
airs on the UT Saturday broadcast (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GREECE. 9420, Nov 27 at 0159, VOG is on, as is more and more rare, 5-pip
mis-timesignal ending at 0200:23! VOG theme, I Foni Tis Helladas, Greek
announcement mentions Makedonias, so is it relaying that program? Guess not as
then ID ``Edho Athinai`` rather than Thessaloniki. Good signal, yet nothing
from 9330 WBCQ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U A E [and non]. 17640.14, Nov 27 at 1424, very poor carrier, typical of
Saudi Arabia offset, but no, this time it`s BBC Hausa at 1400-1430 only, via
UAE, another site known for failing to maintain frequency accuracy.

17705.01, Nov 27 at 1424, S9+10 in Arabic, this BSKSA frequency is close to
accuracy (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 6080, Nov 27 at 0619, good open carrier, with some stray Cuban pulse
jamming audible under, no doubt Greenville about to start the substitute
0630-0700-only VOA English service (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1801 monitoring: UT Friday Nov 27 at 0200 cannot pull
any signal at all from WBCQ on 9330-CUSB, but maybe it`s still on and not
propagating to here, or skipping over. I asked if anyone else was hearing it,
but no replies. Other WBCQs, 7490 BS rather weakened, but 5109.7 OK. Next:
Fri 2130 WRMI 15770 to NE
Fri 2130.5 WRMI 7570 to NW
Sat 0730 HLR 7265-CUSB to SW
Sat 1530 HLR 7265-CUSB to SW
Sat 2030v WA0RCR 1860-AM ND?
Sun 0415v WA0RCR 1860-AM ND?
Mon 0400v WBCQ 5110v-CUSB Area 51 to WSW
Mon 0430 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Tue 1200 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 1415.5 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 2200 WBCQ 7490v to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5109.70-CUSB, Nov 26 at 2232, checking out the Pirate Joe
Thanksgiving special that Larry Will notified us about on WBCQ, ``Lonesome
Traveler`` song. Supposed to be on Area 51 webcast too, but no connexion there,
some error message about java, which I don`t normally get. Not really needed
since 5109.7 signal is propagating well this early. 2245 says was Bill Boyd &
Cowboy Ramblers with ``Tin Roof Blues``, on the Pirate Joe Country Music Show,
Blues and R Extravaganzo on WHVW 950 and WBCQ SW 5110. Then spends a few
minutes hunting for info about the song, the year recorded, and back-announces
some more, including ``Rock of My Soul``. 2251, Bob Wills, ``Red Hot Needle``;
2258 ``Dixie``, 2300 legal ID for both stations and into ``Evening Concert`` of
classical music, background about first piece to be an Ignaz Moscheles piano
concerto; sponsored by a life insurance agency. Very well, but all this does
not seem to be about Thanksgiving in particular. Supposed to continue until
0100.

5109.70-CUSB, UT Fri Nov 27 after 0200 UT is again with new show `Just Right`,
leading with background explanation by two guys conversing. Seems this was
originally on the 6 kW, 94.9 MHz student station at the University of Western
Ontario in London, CHRW, ``Your Cure for Corporate Radio``, but the GM banned
them for anti-Islamic stance, which continues to be the main point of the
broadcast now on SW courtesy of WBCQ. Refers to their website
http://www.justrightmedia.org
where there is a very large archive of this and previous broadcasts: ``Not
right *wing* --- JUST RIGHT hosted by Robert Metz and Robert Vaughan`` with a
very wide variety of subjects. Not part of Area 51, so something else is on the
A51 webcast. This is audible while WOR on WBCQ 9330 is not – if we keep to that
schedule, it`ll be much better once winter is past (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Nov 27 at 1347, surprised to find WTWW-3 on air, call-in to
973-506-8442, about the ``Montauk Chronicles``, interview with film-maker
Christopher about alien abduxions, etc. Suggests that all science fiction is
really true, implanted by the aliens to confuse us. No breaks at all for ads,
not even for 1400 hourtop ID past 1415. Refers to
http://unknownoriginsradio.com

That site confirms, just as I suspected, that we`re listening to the Dark
Matters Radio Network, which WTWW failed to turn off at 0800 UT following Art
Bell! Must have been on all night with whatever DMRN was feeding, but UOR is
originally webcast Thursdays at 8-10 pm ET = UT Fridays 01-03, and obviously
not formatted for real broadcasts requiring station

[DX] VOA Radiogram, program 139, 28-29 November 2015

2015-11-27 Thread Kari Kallio
Hello friends, last week's experiments on VOA Radiogram were largely
successful.A good demonstration of the simultaneous decoding of text and an
image can be
seen in this video prepared by Oscar in Italy.

http://voaradiogram.net/post/133719604758/oscar-in-italy-provided-this-video-of-the-voa

The simultaneous text/image transmission could be very useful for a news
organization, especially if one future software application can decode both.
The QR codes were successfully scanned even if the image was not completely
crisp. Beyond a certain level of fuzziness, however, the QR codes would not
decode. See some examples here.

http://voaradiogram.net/post/134055005357/qr-codes-transmitted-via-shortwave-then-scanned

The only advantage of the QR codes that I can think of is that scanning the QR
code is a slightly quicker way of accessing a web page than copying and pasting
the URL. The plain-text URL, however, enjoys the advantage of error correction.
Maybe future software can open a selected URL in a browser.
If you tuned in last Sunday at 1930-2000 UTC on 15670 kHz, trans-Atlantic
shortwave propagation to Europe was generally very poor. It was much better to
western North America and surprisingly good in New Zealand. See these examples

http://voaradiogram.net/post/134028333147/program-138-on-15670-khz-images-tell-the-story-of

Last Saturday's transmission at 0930-1000 UTC on 5865 did not reach Europe, but
it will, at least occasionally, around the winter solstice, so keep trying. The
5865 kHz transmission did reach Western Australia, as seen in these images sent
by Frank in Perth

http://voaradiogram.net/post/134027418152/frank-in-perth-western-australia-sent-this

This weekend on VOA Radiogram, we will transmit two more QR codes, smaller than
the ones sent last week. Also, a VOA Turkish news story, so have your Fldigi
set for UTF-8.
Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 139, 28-29 November 2015, all in
MFSK32 except where noted:
1:31 Program preview
3:10 New Shepard reusable rocket lands after launch*
7:55 Lasers used to cool water*
14:09 El Niño Brings Unexpected Fish to California*
19:30 News item from VOA Turkish Service**
22:45 Closing announcements*
26:05 Olivia 64-2000: Transmission schedule
* with image
** Requires UTF-8 for proper display of diacritics. In Fldigi:
Configure > Colors > Rx/Tx Character set to UTF-8
Please send reception reports to radiog...@voanews.com

VOA Radiogram transmission schedule
(all days and times UTC):
Sat 0930-1000 5865 kHz
Sat 1600-1630 17580 kHz
Sun 0230-0300 5745 kHz
Sun 1930-2000 15670 kHz
All via the Edward R. Murrow transmitting station in North Carolina.
The Mighty KBC will transmit a minute of MFSK32 Sunday at 0130 UTC (Saturday
8:30 pm EST) on 7395 kHz, via Germany. Reports for this KBC reception to Eric:
themighty...@gmail.com
I am now preparing the MFSK image gallery from program 131 and will be
responding to those reports this weekend.
I hope you can tune in and write in this weekend.

2015-11-27 Thread Arthur Delibert
INDONESIA, 3905.0 kHz, RRI Merauke, 12:12 - 12:30, man and woman alternating in
Indonesian. Just before 12:17, mention of 'Radio Republic Indonesia.' For
rest of the time, brief musical pieces with talk between. Fair signal with
some ham QRM, occasional strong het from a ham tuning up on the frequency;
largely covered by ham QRM at 12:30. Best signal so far this year, despite (or
because of?) the geomagnetic K-index having jumped a bit overnight. (Delibert,

[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs November 27, 2015

2015-11-27 Thread Glenn Hauser via Hard-Core-DX
** CUBA. 17730, Nov 27 at 2247, RHC French is suptorted --- suppressed and
distorted modulation (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 9900, Nov 27 at 2143, fair signal from R. Cairo transmitting dead
air in English. Still so at 2243 as the English sesquihour toward Europe and
North America should be closing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 15580, Nov 27 at 2132, VOA with VG strength, obviously Greenville,
when I want to hear `Music Time in Africa` at the Friday 2100 time unknown to
Heather, but modulation is quite distorted and carrier wobbling slightly. I`ve
notified them of the problem, which may be the least of what they are
confronted with at GB, from aging equipment and understaffing. Anyhow, she
includes a long interview rather than music until 2139 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 1801 monitoring: confirmed Friday November 27 at 2130
on WRMI 15770, sufficient. However, at 2130.6 on WRMI 7570, it`s WOR 1800 ---
it seems I missed uploading the new file to System F at Okeechobee; my fault.
Which means the Thu 2100 airing on 7570 was also the old one. (As my error rate
climbs despite my best efforts, it may be time to retire?) Now #1801 is ready
to go on System F should there still be any need for it. Next:

Sat 1530 HLR 7265-CUSB to SW

Sun 0415v WA0RCR 1860-AM ND?
Mon 0400v WBCQ 5110v-CUSB Area 51 to WSW
Mon 0430 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Tue 1200 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 1415.5 WRMI 9955 to SSE
Wed 2200 WBCQ 7490v to WSW
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9955, Nov 27 at 2303, WRMI with ``Can-can`` music, introducing a
`Happy Station` occupying this PCJ Friday hour, Keith Perron about his visit to
Paris during a European tour; 2337 playing ``Bolero``. I gather this was
produced well before the latest incidents, a happier time (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, Nov 27 at 2128, WTWW-2 is on early, or rather probably still on
all-day. Might have been able to hear it with all devices off at midday. As in
previous report, has stayed plugged in to Dark Matter Radio Network instead of
closing down at 0800 after `Midnight [sic] in the Desert`; on autopilot, or an
experiment? Very poor signal now but definitely there with something talking.
At 2141 sounds like it could be Unshackled, some kind of drama.

Retune at 2208, now I recognize the voice of eminent scientist and broadcaster
Dr Michio Kaku, continuous talk about when science was a priority in the
Islamic world, then in China, which had the largest fleet of ships in the
world, exploring as far as Africa, but finding there were no competing empires,
destroyed the ships and turned inward. Finally overtaken by Europe with the
Renaissance. 2228 abrupt cut to music, but it`s still Michio outroing part 1 of
`Exploration`, apparently somewhat edited down.

Then into part 2, with two guests on different phones discussing nuclear
accidents, or ``broken-arrows``, H-bombs accidentally dropped by US in South
Carolina, off Spain, and Greenland but which did not (and could not) detonate.
2257 once again abrupt cut to theme and outro Explorations. 2257.5 a series of
program promos for other shows on Dark Matters Radio Network, `The
Unexplained`, Paranormal-something, `Capricorn Radio`; 2300 ID and into spooky
music, `More Questions Than Answers`, ``the only paranormal quiz show``.

Here`s the full program schedule in PT/ET, confirming `Exploration` Fridays at
2/5 pm = 2200 UT:
http://darkmatterdigitalnetwork.com/
So as long as this error(?) lasts, that`s what we`ll be hearing on 5085. This
schedule is not 24 hours, however, taking a break in the daytimes, and in fact
not resuming on Fridays until 2200 UT. ``Due to the nature of the varied length
of podcasts, start times are approximate. We will be repeating shows throughout
the night [sic] after the live/new program segment.``

Michio Kaku is right-on, a science FACT show, which hardly belongs mixed in
with this other stuff, but a way to get on the air. I was wondering if the
defunct Global 24 had something to do with this being on SW, as his
`Exploration` show was on that for a while, after I had initially recommended
Kaku to ``Phil Workman`` as a good show to pick up filling 24/7 of airtime.

Meanwhile, WTWW-3 is *again/still* dead air on 12105, S9+30 Nov 27 at 2142
check (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Correxion: this was on 15570, not 15770!
15570, Nov 25 at 2052, open carrier, dead air, good signal, probably Greenville
warming up here to take over 15580 at 2100 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

NOTE: Still no power loss at WOR HQ; as of 0040 UT Nov 28, OG shows 486
customers without power in Enid, double the figure of a few hours earlier. But
the temp has fallen to 28, which means less freezing rain even if
precipitating. Our trees are heavy-laden but not breaking yet

woke up already at 0650 UT this morning.

On 11725 kHz noted some overlapping two signals of both R NZi and Vatican
Radio special in French, live coverage of Pope's journey to Nairobi Kenya
Africa, at 0724 to 0758 UT slot.

NEW ZEALAND/VATICAN STATE 11724.984 kHz odd frequency from R NZi
Rangitaiki-NZ site, English sce at 0724 UT on Nov 27. Talk on PNG matter.

But at 07.24:05 UT started/appeared another station on that channel, with
flute mx and French sce annmt at 0730 UT, live coverage on Vatican Radio
special service on Pope's journey to Kenya. R NZi scheduled 0459-0758 UT.
VR French was S=8 here in southern Germany. But propperly S=9+25dB signal
noted on Moscow Russia SDR post.

\\ VR special in Bras-accented Portuguese presenter from Kenya on 17590 kHz,
S=9+5dB signal here in Germany, S=9+25dB logged on SDR unit in Moscow
Russia. VR presenter also announced many Portuguese radio stations
worldwide, who relay this Vatican Radio sce, like for example via R?dio
Aparecida Brazil radio service.

\\ 21550 kHz VR special in English, NIL signal - only threshold string of
S=1-2 in European/Germany signal skip zone, but S=9+30dB signal heard in
Moscow Russia, some 2500 kms distance away from Rome.

GREECE 9420.004 Voice of Greece ERT Avlis played Greek folk mx at 0655 UT
Nov 27, at 0700 station identification " Helliniki ... or something like.

CUBA [tentat.] 9330.004 Spanish number reading lady from Bejucal? site?
At 0703 UT, joined the remote SDR reception net unit at NJ/NY-US,
S=9+10dB in NY area. Heard Spanish numbers '48864' or '17471' strings.

KOREA D.P.R. 9444.986 odd frequency from Kujang-KRE site, surprisingly odd
frequency of VoKOR English sce at 0712 UT on Nov 27. Probably deep icing
winter temperature in Korea, hit the main power net, maybe electric voltage
is unstable, or icing on the curtain antennas? S=7 in remote NJ-US target.

Despite domestic KCBS Korean sce from Kanggye site is on
exact even 9665.0 kHz at 0720 UT Nov 27.

INDONESIA, 3905.0 kHz, RRI Merauke, 12:12 - 12:30, man and woman alternating in
Indonesian. Just before 12:17, mention of 'Radio Republic Indonesia.' For
rest of the time, brief musical pieces with talk between. Fair signal with
some ham QRM, occasional strong het from a ham tuning up on the frequency;
largely covered by ham QRM at 12:30. Best signal so far this year, despite (or
because of?) the geomagnetic K-index having jumped a bit overnight. (Delibert,

[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs November 28, 2015

2015-11-27 Thread Glenn Hauser via Hard-Core-DX
** ALBANIA [and non]. 7469.98, Nov 28 at 0224, R. Tirana is certainly on
tonite, S7 to S9 with IS running past 0230 to sign-on starting at 0230:41.
Klara`s announcement has changed to cite 7470 for this broadcast so it must be
sticking; but sounds like she gives time for the earlier 7465 broadcast as
``2100 to 2030``, and into news. My first chance to check since I found it
missing three nights ago.

Wolfgang Büschel was also monitoring this night, via a remote in New Jersey:
``7469.979 kHz frequency in 49mb from the Shijak broadcast center site. Signal
strength was S=9+20dB tonight. All in English language. No distortion, no
interference on that channel.``

7425, meanwhile, the frequency we persuaded R. Tirana not to use, is still
occupied at 0225 Nov 28 by Vatican Radio mixing with Martí as leapfrog of 7305
over 7365 at Greenville, with the VR IS audible at 0227. And also stray Cuban
pulse jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** BRAZIL. 9722.72, Nov 28 at 0142, RB2 has drifted down to here, S7 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** EGYPT. 9964.55 approx., Nov 28 at 0140, R. Cairo Arabic service is just
barely modulated with whine, S9+10.

9745, Nov 28 at 0213, R. Cairo`s other Arabic service is suptorted, S9+20.
Nothing in English/dead air on 9315, 9720 or 9860 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** FRANCE [non]. 11580, Sat Nov 28 at 0133, RFI English via WRMI is S9+10, but
modulation is scratchy; interview in Ghana about the limited areas 4G is
available (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OMAN. 11650, Nov 28 at 0134, Qur`an at S6-8, so RSO is here tonite (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** PERU [and non]. Correxion: in this report, the correct Chaski cutoff was at
0111:36.5*, not 0112:36.5.

5980, Nov 22 at 0058, one JBA carrier, R. Chaski, and still only one 0059-0100+
when BBC/UAE should have come on. By 0110 now there are two beating against
each other until the stronger one cuts off at 0111:36.5* which is 12 seconds
later than at 0111:24.5 on Nov 20 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SRI LANKA. 11905, Nov 28 at 0137, SLBC with S Asian songs, S7-9, much
stronger than usual; I should have had an easy time copying the mis-timesignal
at 0115+ (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** THAILAND [and non]. 13744.97, Nov 28 at 0122, R. Thailand is very poor, S4
in Thai. Hope it was better during preceding semihours in English. RHC is still
on 13740 but weak enough at only S9 not to be a problem (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7615.00-USB, Nov 28 at 0220, very formal net with YL NCS strong,
asking others to making general calls, those very weak. Calls mentioned sounded
like Broadway 51, 0222 Treadway 19, then announces net is moving to NNB
(fonetikaly), and that announcement also repeated by others. I think it must be
TRIBLADE, i.e. CAP (Civil Air Patrol), as in this similar log:
http://forums.radioreference.com/utility-listening/304074-7615khz-usb-0200utc.html
And which I also logged on other frequencies in DXLD 15-33 (7416) and 15-05 and
14-51 (14902). There are several more CAP logs in the DXLD 2014y archive (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 9330, Nov 28 at 0115, WBCQ is certainly on tonite and propagating to
the tune of S9+25, but it`s Blalock the Blaster, so quick tune to the others
with UT Sat`s `Allan Weiner Worldwide`: 7490 is also S9+25, and 5109.7-CUSB
running 29 seconds behind, is S9+30. Later in the hour he`s explaining to a
caller the different color TV systems, how the FCC first approved the CBS
mechanical scan in the early 50`s, but in a year replaced it with the RCA
electronic system, which lasted until the DTV transition; also another way to
fool the eye into seeing some color on black and white TV. Around 0215, 7490
seems to drop power and then go off; shortly later 5109.7 too, back on at 0219.
Meanwhile I have been hearing terrible splash QRM from WRNO 7504.75 across 7490
and beyond. By 0233 check AWWW has concluded, BS is on 7490, and the video game
show on 5109.7, `Grogcast` whose nominal timing is 0200-0300 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 7504.75, Nov 28 at 0215, WRNO S9+45 blob centered approx. here,
extremely distorted and splattering as far as 7490 WBCQ and beyond, 7520 WWCR
and beyond, both of which are weaker to start with and can`t muscle aside the
crap on their own frequencies (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 5085, more on the peculiar situation of WTWW-2 (not -3 as misnumbered
in last report). After carrying Dark Matter programs during the night and day
on Friday Nov 27 as detailed before, at next check 0114 UT Sat Nov 28, these
have been removed and replaced by dead air, and still so at 0150. But by next
check 0212, a bluegrass version of ``Jingle Bells`` is playing; 0229
Ted-in-a-reverb-well is selling some radio; and more Xmas carols. Signal is
blasting in during music such that it almost merits
