** COLOMBIA? 4940, Oct 3 at 0230, anonymous mystery missionary station
is on again, good S9/+10 into Bonaire SDR during drama, carrier offset
first reads -45.1, anomaly? Then settles to more usual -5.4 to -6.0.
0255 program outro sounds like `Historia Preferida`, or was it
`Historia de la Biblia`? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2054 monitoring: not confirmed
Friday October 2 at 2200 on WRMI 9955: canceled without notice. At
2204 check a Lt. Joe Allen spelling his email address, and pushing a
religious book ``Behind Metal Bars`` with phone number. O, the System
B sked has been changed but still shows a longago date May 4, now with
`Mental Bars`, M/W/F at 2200, with Viva Miami filling at 2215. So now
we have lost our 9955 audience at both Friday evening times.

Confirmed UT Sat Oct 3 at 0130 on WRMI 7780: inaudible! here tho 7730
& 7570 are, weaker than usual; nor at UTwente, nor at Virginia, but
attaining at least a fair S5-S7 signal at Maine SDR. K index is only 2
but propagation continues really sucky. Next:

** U S A. (7490 webcast), UT Sat Oct 3 at 0001, WBCQ `AAAWWW` is
starting with ``WTO``; 0104 usual opening fiddling on the air with
studio settings, mikes. His mike is cutting out a bit. Says it`s hot
in DeLand of Fla, 75% humidity, 71 degrees outside, 81 inside Studio
9. Muses whether to resume video UStreaming during show so all can see
scantily clad beautiful Angela. Into Topic A, Virus and now inside
beloved Trump too, microbiology lesson, later complaining about
property and income taxation. I`m only semi-listening while following
more objective TV coverage of the situation.

At 0027 I tune around remotes to find out which frequencies are in
play: at Rochester, no 3265, no 5130, no 6160, not even 7490, nor even
9330 with WLCR! How about Alexandria VA, a bit further away for better
skip? Not much: no 3, 5 or 6, 7 is JBA while 9330 is a good S7 during
Portuguese aimed at Brasil. In Maine, 9330 is VG S8-S9, but 7490 is
only JBA. At Warrenton MO, nothing on 3, 5 or 6, but 7490 is good
S5-S7, 9330 good S7.

At 0042, he finally confirms date is 2nd of October, YOOL 2020 and
simulcasting on 7490 & 6160 --- I don`t think so, 6159.9 not picked up
anywhere including here. Now he says that 5130 has been ``mothballed,
not retired`` due to shortage of technicians. Again appeals for job
applicants, says pays better than most. Angela adds they also need
more buyers of airtime. 0050 he explains how it is necessary to
discharge capacitors and everything to avoid being killed even when
transmitters are ``off``. 0056 closing prayer suggests OFIH should
modify the virus just a little to make it less lethal. Yeah, that`s
the ticket! At 0114 I check reception here to be sure while not
listening to Hal Turner: zilch on 6159.9; 7490 is S9; 9330 is S9+40
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

I'm noting it fairly strong tonight. It's been known to have issues
switching to night power/pattern.

They'd filed back in July to be silent, but have apparently been silent
since December.

The 870 signal matches a webstream I found. It's the first time ive heard
this since last winter

[HCDX] WNJC 1360 Weekly DX Test, FT8 Basics, and HSFB

2020-10-02 Thread Les Rayburn
Chief Engineer Duke Hamann, KC2DUX has committed to continuing weekly DX Tests
late night Saturday/early Sunday mornings until at least the end of October.
They will always begin at Midnight Eastern Time (0400 UTC). At this point, it
looks like Duke will continue to include FT-8 transmissions as well.

Last weekend’s first-ever test of the mode brought some promising results.
Conditions were poor overall yet the FT-8 transmissions from WNJC were
successfully decoded on the West Coast of the United States, into Florida and
Alabama and locations as distant as Spain. Most of the DX’ers who had success
with the mode were hams who already had experience—but there were exceptions.

Below we’ll discuss a bit more about the mode and how you can get started on
the fun. And never fear, in addition to this exotic mode, Duke plans to
continue with the usual voice and Morse Code ID’s, sweep tones, and sound
effects. This means you still have a great chance to log the station
regardless.

If you do receive the test, you can request an e-mail verification from the
station by e-mailing Duke Hamann at:

kc2...@duxpond.com

If you would prefer a QSL card, you can send reception reports along with a
self-addressed stamped enveloped (SASE) to:

Duke Hamann, KC2DUX
P.O. Box 84
Dennisville, NJ 08214

THE BASICS OF FT-8 MODE

First a little Q:

Q. What the heck is FT-8?

A. It’s a special mode that requires a computer to decode the transmission from
the station. The station transmits a series of tones, in a pre-arranged
sequence with careful timing. A computer “listens” for these tones, allowing it
to identify them even when no audible signal can be detected by your ears. The
computer can literally hear below the noise level. It can also hear “through”
QRM from other stations in some cases.

Q. Do I need an SDR (software defined radio) or a fancy receiver?

A. Nope. You can use virtually any receiver and a laptop, desktop or tablet to
receive the signals. You need a way to get the audio from your radio into the
computer. A patch cord from your earphone jack, a computer interface of the
type used by hams, even a microphone placed close to the radio speaker can
work.

Q. What software do I need on the computer?

A. There are several software packages that can be used, but the original and
still the best is called WSJT-X You can download it for free here:

WSJT Home Page

Q. Can I record the audio and just play it back into the computer later?

A. Technically, yes—but it’s difficult. The timing has to be precise and audio
levels can be important too. Better to do it “live” during the DX Test.

TIME SYNC

Timing is critical. The software is looking for tones transmitted at a specific
interval of time in “blocks” or groups that make up the text. Your computer
clock has to be in perfect sync with the transmitter clock. Yes, this could be
done with GPS, but the easiest way is to use a NTP application. Again, there is
free software. Take a look at Meinberg. You install it as a service on your
system, let it disable the built-in time sync and it just works.

MODES & BANDWIDTH

FT8 is normally done in USB mode by hams—but WNJC is transmitting the tones in
AM mode as required by FCC rules. This means you want to use AM mode on your
receiver. The tones vary in frequency, so you want a bandwidth of about 2.5-3
kHz…nothing too narrow.

During last week’s test some of us got better results by using LSB mode. If the
test starts and you can’t decode the signal try a different mode or wider
bandwidth. Each transmission can take 30 seconds or longer to decode. Be
patient.

GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND (YOUTUBE TOO)

Do a Google search on “How to get started on FT8 mode” and you’l find lots of
advice on how to get started. Likewise, YouTube has tons of videos on the
topic. Search with a plus sign (+) sign and add your radio for specific advice.

I.E. "Getting started on FT8 + Drake R8B"

HOW DO I….

FT8 is one of the most popular modes of operation in amateur radio. On any
given day, there are more hams using FT8 than Morse Code (CW). But it’s not the
easiest thing to get working the first time. There are lots of variables…what
kind of radio, what kind of connection, your computer clock, etc. Too many for
me to give you a “checklist” of instructions.

Experience and trial and error are the best bets here. The good news is that
it’s easy to test. Tune your receiver to 14.074 mHz in the 20 Meter ham band.
Set your receiver to USB mode and start the software. Once you’ve got things
set up right, you’ll quickly begin decoding signals nearly 24 hours a day.

CUBA 5025, Oct 2 at 0537 UT, R. Rebelde, S=9+20dB of dead air --- well,
at least it's not distorted since there is no modulation! Still
propagating post-sunrise at 1240 UT to S=9/+10dB and still dead.
Something's always wrong at RadioCuba.

[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs October 1-2, 2020

2020-10-02 Thread Glenn Hauser via Hard-Core-DX
** CHINA. 9215, Oct 2 at 1246, JBA carrier with flutter, a CNR1 jammer
vs SOH frequency --- the only WOOB one I find below 14 MHz.
Propagation is still degraded. K-index is 3. October is traditionally
a month for a peak in SW reception conditions, but not yet! (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** COLOMBIA? 4940, reply to my latest report:

``4.940 kHz 23.30 UTC 01-10-2020 SINPO 55545. Caribbean music in
Spanish, including one song dedicated to Colombia (Cantando, cantando
yo viviré/Colombia tierra querida) as well as Dominican singer Juan
Luis Guerra. Then, I also heard a program called Casados y felices, at
23.40, presented by Gladis and Enrique Saavedra, both speaking in
Spanish with Colombian accent. As additional clue, they ended the
program by inviting listeners to e-mail them to
i...@fuerzadepaz.com.

So, this is the new station Glenn Hauser has been recently reporting
on the group. As far as I can remember the same frequency was used by
Continental or Amazonas Internacional, both Venezuelan stations owned
by the same people living in Barinas, but years ago. Now they're off
the air! Therefore, although there was no clear station ID, some facts
indicate that it broadcasts from Colombia, such as the Colombian
Spanish, strong reception in relation to my location, and the e-mail
address the aired which seems belongs to the Colombia para Cristo
organisation.

In fact, I dare to say that this is another station operated by the
Colombia para Cristo organisation, which also operated Marfil Stereo,
La Voz de tu Conciencia and Alcaraván Radio. Maybe friend Rafael
Rodríguez in Bogotá may give us some relevant and additional
information about this new –tentative Colombian- radio station.
(Leonardo Santiago, SW35, 5-meter longwire, Mérida, Venezuela)``

Tnx, Leonardo. 4940, Oct 2 at 0132 check via Bonaire SDR, on again in
Spanish, S8-S9. At 0537 direct, tropical music S8-S9 above local noise
level S7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5025, Oct 2 at 0537, R. Rebelde, S9+20 of dead air --- well,
at least it`s not distorted since there is no modulation! Still
propagating post-sunrise at 1240 to S9/+10 and still dead. Something`s
always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 720, Oct 2 at 1210, open carrier with slow SAH of
184/minute = 3.07 Hz. Comes to life with Mexican NA, choral until 1215
``Vd. escucha: El Fonógrafo 7-20 -- mil vatios -- Ciudad Juárez``..
That would be XEJCC; maybe also mentioned call but not positive.

All this contradicts IRCA Mexican Log info which shows daytime only
with 25000 watts, sign on at 1159 with Chihuahua state anthem around
1205 after NA. WRTH does show only 1 kW.

Then follow a string of mandatory PSAs mostly governmental, except for
one promoting a webstation-only, apparently, ``Radio Cid?, La Voz de
los Juarenses``. 1219.6 Fonógrafo slogan ID again and fading down.

Aha, searching finds it`s really Radio STIRTT, as here:
https://www.facebook.com/radiostirttjuarez/
or
https://www.facebook.com/StirttSeccionJuarez/
http://www.radiostirtt.org.mx

Ahh, the Mexicans love their cumbersome acronyms, initialisms! This
means Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Radio, la
Televisión y Telecomunicaciones, i.e. a labor union. We learn that 14
septiembre was Dia del Locutor, and today 2 de octubre is Día
Internacional de la NO VIOLENCIA, e.g. against women in India. And 22
de noviembre will be their 72nd anniversary. Such celebrations are the
major subject of these displays. This page is to listen-live:
https://www.facebook.com/radiostirttjuarez/app/190322544333196/
where I hear some upbeat stereo songs; ID at 1847 as I write this
sounds like ``Radio Estir``. But we digress!

711.27v & 728.73v kHz, two matching wobbly spurs making exactly
same-pitched hets against other Mexicans on 710 & 730, are what first
drew me to 720, since that would be the transmitter producing them
exactly halfway between. This was first at 1208. Once modulating, late
sign-on? from 1210, 720 itself sounds OK.

The spurs remain but by 1222 they are both gone, while 720 is back up
with song in Spanish, talk, and not fading out until 1226. LSR Enid
today is 1228 UT. There has been no other significant signal on 720
which could have been source of spurs, but the disparity in
disappearances detracts from 100% certainty. Maybe XEJCC transmitter
was tweaked in the meantime, or lost them once warmed up? BTW, at 1226
the other Chihuahuans, XEDP on 710 and XEHB 730 are still in (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

I'm noting it fairly strong tonight. It's been known to have issues
switching to night power/pattern.

They'd filed back in July to be silent, but have apparently been silent
since December.

The 870 signal matches a webstream I found. It's the first time ive heard
this since last winter
