[HCDX] Radio Beacon BJ1SE

2023-12-19 Thread Bill Smith
Radio Beacon BJ1SE logged with weak CW bursts passing over the west of Douglas,
MA from Chinese satellite XW2-D on 145.855 mhz. Supposedly radio amateur
satellite XW2-d conducts atmospheric physics experiments. Probably would be
louder when it passes directly overhead. My location is surrounded by 80 foot
oak and pine trees so not very good for satellite reception. According to the
N2YO satellite web site there are 1,918 objects in my sky right now . This
logging was at (1217 UTC) on Dec. 19th using a Yaesu FT-847 and a 2M egg-beater
antenna. The antenna does resemble on old fashioned egg-beater. XW2-D will be
back over my sky at 1633 UTC this afternoon. Again, according to the N2YO web
site, there are 28,420 objects in the total sky. Bill Smith

[HCDX] Bird is the Word - Part II

2023-12-06 Thread Bill Smith
I have received an E-mail reply from Andrew Vitz, the state of MA
ornithologist, stating that, although166.380 mhz is used for some projects, MA
uses 434.000 mhz to track kestrels. Andrew says that each kestrel 's tag is
coded so that each can be recognized even though they are on the same
frequency. At any rate if you want to remember the song Bird is the Word by
the Trashmen, the video is on youtube. There is also a Simpsons' episode
featuring the song. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

As is well know: The Bird is the Word. The Motus Tracking System which tracks
Kestrels in Massachusetts (As per the article in the latest Massachusetts
Wildlife Magazine,No.3,2023) as well as other species of birds and animals
elsewhere is on 166.380 mhz (Western Hemisphere), 150.100 mhz (Europe), and
151.500 mhz (Australia). These frequencies were supplied by the Bing AI. The
article states there are two frequencies being used in MA so I don't vouch for
the accuracy of AI. At any rate you can read about Motus at Motus.org. Bill

[HCDX] SMC Petition (conclusion)

2023-07-25 Thread Bill Smith
Realistically, SWLs have no economic or political influence and it is even less
compared to the financial industry. Short wave broadcasting, sad to say, is
considered a remnant of a bygone era super ceded by the internet and the
computer. If (THE BIG IF) the technology advocated in this petition ,and there
is quite a lot of technology being advocated,, actually works as it is supposed
to, there is little to worry about except brief bursts of noise which are not
harmful interference. The report does state that over years of testing not
one verifiable interference report was received. Verifiable is defined among
other things as getting the call sign of the interfering station. Getting an
ID on a frequency agile brief burst of data of an unknown mode of transmission
does not sound like an easy thing to do. Thanks to Arthur and Zack for their
comments. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

[HCDX] SMC petition (continued)

2023-07-23 Thread Bill Smith
Topic: Co-existence (page 19) says co-channel interference could occur at some
times and places, but is sufficiently limited to enable preventing of harmful
(harmful is in italics) interference, provided licensees are granted multiple
2-25 band frequencies . . . and licensees use frequency – agile techniques.
Footnote 50: defines harmful interference as interference which endangers a
radio navigation service or of other safety services, or seriously degrades,
obstructs, or repeatedly interrupts a radio service operating in accordance
with (the ITU) radio regulations. So what they are warranting is no harmful
interference if they get what they need. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

SB QST ARL ARLB015
ARLB015 Commercial Interests Petition FCC for High Power Allocation
on Shortwave Spectrum

The ad hoc group "Shortwave Modernization Coalition" petitioned the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow data communications
on multiple bands within the HF 2 - 25 MHz range with up to 20 KW,
including in bands immediately adjacent to spectrum allocated to the
Amateur Radio Service. This group appears to represent high-speed
stock trading interests.

The FCC has assigned it RM-11953. Comments are due by July 31, 2023,
and reply comments by August 15.

While the petitioners exclude the amateur bands, high power
operations on immediately adjacent bands are proposed. The ARRL is
reviewing the petition.

A copy of the petition can be found in PDF format at:
https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/1042840187330/1 .

Azores FM stations were heard this morning (June 21, 2023) in Mashpee, MA. I
presume by K4NBF, Bryce Foster. This was noted on DX Maps. I was listening on
87.7 mhz at the time and heard nothing. The morning started out with SSB
stations from Europe being received on 50 mhz (6M). I talked to F4EZJ and F4ARU
in France and heard EA (Spain) and CT (Portugal). Others did better. All the
while my FM receiver was tuned to the Azores on 87.7. For the record I am 92

QSL from CYA373 for a 40.680 mhz logging on Jan. 16, 2023. CYA373 is the
Canadian experimental call of VA2CY one of a very few authorized on 40 mhz.
Canada authorized even fewer than the USA. Located on Orleans Island in the St.
Lawrence Seaway. Apparently, 40 mhz will not become an amateur band here. It
never seemed to be promoted by the ARRL or mentioned in their publication.
Best source of information for 40 mhz and a lot of other esoteric frequencies

[HCDX] 40 MHz experimental band USA

2023-05-29 Thread Bill Smith
According to Tom, WM2XEJ in GA, the FCC is not renewing his experimental
license leading to the demise of the 40 mhz band in November. He has hopes 40
mhz will be incorporated in the Part 15 rules as per the 22M or 13 mhz band.
The FCC only licensed a very few stations on 40 mhz anyway. The rest of the
world will struggle on without us. Further scuttlebutt(Via EI7GL) has Belgium
authorizing use of 40 mhz. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA

[HCDX] FM DXing Season

2023-05-16 Thread Bill Smith
As in previous years I have begun to monitor the FM band in an attempt to hear
Europe. The primary focus is on the Azores station, Pico da Barrosa, 87.7 mhz,
which has previously been heard in Newfoundland, Ontario, and MA (not by me).
Most recently was 2021 This station runs 30kw. An alternative is Iceland on
88.0 mhz which also has been heard in MA(again not by me) and NJ. I am using a
Yaesu FRG-9600 receiver and a 10 ele FM Yagi up about 20 feet on a 800 foot ASL
hill. Hopefully, this will be a good FM season, although it has been several
weeks since I have even logged a station at 40 mhz. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA
