[HCDX] MP3 Recorders

2009-07-18 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
Re. posts from Horacio and Björn:
I have a few iRiver hard drive MP3 recorders that I don't use anymore.They
were very advanced at their day If memory serves me right I have two H-120
and one H-320, all with 20 GB capacity. I also have a few iRiver flash-based
MP3 recorders. All devices have line-in and have been used to record DX.
They are definitely doing their job.

Re: [HCDX] SPR4 Audio Help

2005-11-28 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
Hi Patrick,

I did the same mod when I bought my SPR-4 back in 1979 - and the audio
quality was just as awful. In fact the audio quality was the main reason
I and the SPR-4 parted some 15 years later. Maybe a highpass audio filter
might be helpful - I assume if you can clean up the lowest 2-300 Hz the
audio quality should improve. Should have steep edges though.

Static. Totally normal phenomenon, although a nuisance when conditions

Re: [HCDX] 1629 Hx or spurs and DRM noise on 675 ?

Though I can't say anything for sure, I doubt that NRK-675 was doing DRM
tests at that time.
If it's any comfort, the way conditions were it is ulikely that you would
have heard KBRW anyway; it was almost inaudible even here in the Arctic.

SV: [HCDX] CD Station Reports

2003-06-28 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
I have been using CD's for some time myself, usually burned as Audio CD,
that way the CD can be read on any CD player. I suppose cassette decks are
becoming increasingly rare among station personell while a CD player or a PC
with CD-ROM is practically everywhere.

Have also experienced with sending 1.4MB diskettes with mp3 or wav files
copied to it. Found that the CD solution was better.

John

I have been using CD's for a while along my reception reports. It works
in the same way of the audio tapes but the advantage is that the CD is
flat and lighter than an audio tape.

You always should send a reception report with details (if possible) and
those typical items like frequency, date, SINPO, antenna, receiver,
etcYou should also send a sort of personal letter like "Hi, I am
John, from USA, etc...please find enclosed a CD with the recording of
your transmission along a reception report"...

I got some QSL cards using CD's including Holy Tibet, Burkina Faso, Full
Gospel Church (Canaries), Radio Tanzania (Zanzibar), etc...

Just a last comment. Don't waste your CD's with big stations, I mean,
don't send a CD to Radio Nederland or Radio Japan for example, even
though you can't understand the language. You can easily get a QSL from
these station. CD's (or tapes) should be used in special situations when
you really can't understand the language and the station doesn't have
many resources like someone who can spend some time reading your report
and trying to understand what you mean.

Hi all:

What has been the experience of sending a reception report with a CD
with a file recorded from the actual reception? With the letter, do you
still write out full program details or simply refer to the CD? I am
thinking of giving it a try and hoping to find out what others are doing
first.

Thanks for your valuable DX info, here is something to add to your list:

KJR AM 950 Seattle will be conducting tests from a new transmitter site
today and tomorrow.

The switch from the current main site to the test site will occur in the
9:00 am hour and continue until approx. 3:30 pm, Monday October 27 and
tomorrow, Tuesday.

There will be a minor shift in location, to Vashon, Wa. and a major
shift in directional pattern. Today field measurements on the new DAY
pattern will be made at 50Kw. To see the graphics on the theoretical
patterns and the existing patterns see:

http://www.fccinfo.com/CMDProFacLookup.php

Enter KJR in the search box

The new patterns and site are the ones listed as CP

Testing will continue sporadically over the next few weeks. Mostly in
the daytime without skywave. Some post 11pm adjustments may be made,
however that is usually done with no modulation, lower power, and
without much notice. This may happen tonight (Monday night/Tuesday
morning.)

Feel free to communicate your reception reports or any questions.

Hello!

I would like to buy a minidisc recorder (portable or deck, it doesn't
matter) with the following features:

1) Date/time stamp
2) Long time recording mode (LP4): about 320 minutes
3) Auto Time Stamp (automatic time stamps every xx minutes)
4) On/off timer (capability to automatically switch the recorder on and off
at given times)

It seems to me that 4) is a rare feature.

Does any MD expert out there know of an unit with *all* these features? TIA
for any suggestion!

Yes minidisc interference can be a serious problem with portables. The
important thing is to keep the aerial as far away as possible from the
minidisc and use screened cables, but that will be difficult if you are
using the portable with its built-in telescopic or ferrite rod.

However using communications recievers with a minidisc should not be a
problem. I use an AOR 7030 receiver which actually sits on top of a Sony
JE530 minidisc and find that as long as I use outdoor aerials with screened
coax from the aerial to the receiver, there is no interference at all from
the minidisc.

I've lately found myself becoming more interested in MW BCB DXing. I have
several radios that do okay for casual use, but I'm looking for something a
bit
more serious. On the low end there is frequent mention of the GE Superadio
(which I have) and the CCRadio (which I also have), and I've seen a few
mentions of the newer Tecsun BCL-2000 as a fairly serious contender in this
price range. All of these radios are typically described as pretty decent
for
casual use, but not really sensitive enough for true DXing. On the other
end
of the spectrum I've seen the Drake R8B described as being one of the better
choices for BCB DXing (in addition to just about any other kind of AM
DXing).
Does anyone know of a currently produced radio that would perform better
than
the low end models but cost a bit less than the R8B?

I've seen the Lowe HF-150 mentioned as an excellent BCB DX machine, but it's
out of production and I haven't seen any used ones advertised recently.
(Though
I may not be looking in the right places.)

I'm aware that the radio is just part of the overall equation. For the
moment,
though, that's the part I'd like to address. Any input on this topic will
be
greatly appreciated.

[HCDX] Datong FL-3 - any way to bypass circuit to allow only auto-notch?

2004-02-17 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
I have a couple of Datong FL-3 audio filters. The FL-3 is an FL-2 with the
addition of an auto-notch board.
Since the device itself limits audio recovery to between 250 and 3500 Hz,
I would like to bypass the other functions and use only the auto-notch
function. Do anyone have an idea of how to do this?

[HCDX] Re: Tagalog / Pilipino language ?

2004-02-25 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
Henrik kindly sent me the mp3 file for evaluation. I agree that this is
with little doubt Tagalog/Filipino and the clues point to DZXQ.
Unfortunately I do not find anything that might be interpreted as a
verification. I do know that Finnish DX-er Jim Solatie visited the
station a while ago, and there is a chance that he could shed some more
light to this. Contact me off-list if you do not have his email address.

[HCDX] Re: Funny how no one reports KFNY

2005-02-01 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
I believe KFNY too makes it to Europe on a regular basis - check the
KONG10 log for instance (www.kongsfjord.no) and although I haven't
checked, I am sure that the Swedish and Finnish expedition sites also
have heard this.

They respond to reports too.

[HCDX] Manual for Leader LMV-186A?

2005-05-19 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
I was lucky enough to get hold of a Leader LMV-186A 2 channel AC
Millivoltmeter. It's not really difficult to operate, but there is
supposed to be a user manual available. Anyone out there who can supply
me with a jpg, pdf or paper copy? Leader's home page only has a spec
sheet.

[HCDX] Distorted Arab 1125

2005-07-16 Thread Bjarne Mjelde
Just out of curiosity: Yesterday evening during very auroral conditions I
heard a very distorted (but quite strong) Arab or Arab-sounding station on
1125 (actually the language was impossible to identify...) Any ideas who
this one is? Time was somewhere around 2200Z.
