Just a question regarding RFPI, ignoring all the opinions and ranting
regarding the politics of the station. Is RFPI still on the air, does anyone
know when, or if, it will be going off air? I'm not interested in the
politics of it, just rather saddened that we will probably be losing yet
another SW station.

Thank you very much for your comments Thomas.
 I have tried 3390 kHz but I haven't heard anything yet. I haven't tried
 10330 kHz yet.

I just made a mistake about 5040 kHz. It should be AIR Jeypore, not
Kolkata.
I got the wrong information from the ILG list but both Passport and TBL
(Tropical Band List) says that 5040 kHz is Jeypore.

[HCDX] Re Huge Aurora

2003-06-01 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)
Whilst this is not strictly broadcast information, I think the following is
interesting.

The aurora caused widespread blackout up here at 52N, the ham dx cluster was
going mad with spots from all over Europe, West Eu working East Eu and even
Russia on 2m. I only operate up as far as 6m but even on my indoor dipole I
was able to hear Au signals from Scotland and Poland (none worked though).
This was around 2330-0030z. Now for the odd part, At the same time as the Au
event on VHF, I found very enhanced conditions on 80m (3,5MHz). 80 was wide
open to Asia and South America, in fact in over 20 years of operating on HF
I have never heard such strong signals from Brazil on that band. I worked a
Brazilian who was peaking to 10dB over 9 here on my vertical. I was only
using 50w (he was running 700w and a folded dipole) at the time. 40m also
showed enhancement, but to a lesser degree. Signals to North America,
however, were very poor and much weaker than usual (as I would have
expected). Strange phenomena to be heard together. Not sure what caused the
enhancement to South America, I can only guess that it was something similar
to greyline propagation, and that the edge of the area of increased
absorption somehow channelled the signals through with very little
absorption/attenuation.

 Hi Bogdan,

Seems as though the aurora has been stirring things up in the Southern
Hemisphere too. Yesterday, shortwave propagation above 7 MHz was hopeless
with lots of fluttery signals.

During last evening Fri 30 May, there was an E Skip opening between
Wellington, NZ and New South Wales, Aust. There were strong signals, strong
enough for a picture to form behind the local stations on Ch1 (45.25mHz)
and ch 2 (55.25mHz).

This afternoon sat 31 May, I checked on the Shortwave bands and found
strong signals up to 21MHz, There was also a lone ham on 10 metres.

Last night around midnight the whole of the Southern Horizon was a reddy
colour which I think was an Aurora. Not having seen the Aurora Australis
before, what I saw could have been street lights.

 Paul

[HCDX] Re CRI using Brazil.

2003-05-29 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)
Well according to the HFCC, for what it's worth, CRI do indeed use Brazil as
a relay:

CRI 0100 0200 1234567 14,16 9665 250 BRA B 300303 261003 D RTC
CRI 0300 0400 1234567 10-12 9665 250 BRA B 300303 261003 D RTC

As you can see this information is supposed to be 'in date' and supposedly
correct. Getting detailed information from CRI regarding sites and relays is
not that easy. According to HFCC, CRI uses transmitting facilities in the
following countries:

China, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Spain (1 transmission from 0200-0400 on 9690),
France (ISS), French Guiana, Mali and Russia.

I hope this clears up where the confusion is coming from.

 Hi Bob,

With regards to CRI relay sites, ILG have recently updated their A03 sched
list, but also, you may like to check out www.eibi.de.vu/ where you may
find
 several relays listed from Brasil.

 '73 RAO Robin
 aka [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sorry for the apparent problem I have caused in asking this question. The
basis
of my question is from a confusing comment on page 481 of the 2003 WRTH and
I
quote:
in reference to China Radio International, Relayed via: CRI Exchanges
transmitting facilities with R. Canada Int, R. France Int, R. Exterior de
Espana
and V.O.Russia, also relay facilities in Brazil, Cuba and Mali.

I can only assume the RFI facilities means France and/or French Guiana.
Cuba, OK
there are a good number of transmissions from there to the US. Mali is to
Asia.
So that leaves the Brazil relay.

Maybe I should direct a query to CRI themselves and see if this is a WRTH
typo
or if they really have something down there.

[HCDX] ChromaSound

2003-01-29 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)
An interesting and useful piece of software if you own a PC with a soundcard
is ChromaSound. This uses the power of the pc as an external audio dsp
filter for your receiver. The filters are fully customisable and you can
save your own filters. It offers AGC and auto notch features. I use this
program when listening to the Grundig Satelit that is next to this pc, and
it really does help with the majority of signals (especially on SSB and CW
as the filters in the satelit are quite wide-the ChromaSound ones go down to
100Hz with -60dB skirts. There is one drawback, however, the software takes
a finite time to process the audio data which leads to a time delay of about
1-200mS. This is fine on a stable SSB or broadcast signal, but if you are
trying to tune in a CW signal it is really difficult. The only answer seems
to be to turn off the filter (which you can do from the software), tune in
the CW and then switch it on. trouble is that you might not be able to hear
the signal without the filter! You can download a demo copy of the software
from the Silicon Pixels website. Just thought I'd pass that on as I think
it's a great way to use the soundcard for something other than decoding and
transmitting data modes :)

[HCDX] MW Loop improvements

2002-11-21 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)
Hi all, some of you are building my Hula Loop MW antenna and I thought I
would share an improvement I have made. The improvement is to the design of
the FET preamplifier. Initially the design had a high/low gain switch but I
found this to be limited in use so I looked for a way to vary the gain
rather than to have it switched. My initial design incorporated a variable
resistance in the supply line which worked well, but even though the preamp
only draws just over 8mA it still generated a fair amount of heat. After 2
years of use I found that this heat dissipation in the variable resistor had
caused it to become very sticky and stiff to turn (the usual methods of
cleaning failed to restore proper operation). After many experiments, I have
found that removing the high/low switch and putting a 10k variable resistor
in parallel with the 330 ohm resistor and connecting the wiper to the
common point of the switch gives excellent gain control (i.e. a signal can
be increased from zero on the meter up to s9.). The other advantage is there
is very little heat dissipation through this resistor. Sorry for the long
winded explanation. I will update the circuit diagram shortly to reflect the
changes.

Nice to see HCJB's web site is up to date, you can even download the B01
schedule. Do they not want listeners?

[HCDX] TWR Swaziland

2002-10-07 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)

Thought this info from TWR Swaziland might be interesting.

We have 3 X 100 kW short-wave transmitters and 1 X 50 kW MW transmitter.
The station is fully automated. We receive programming via microwave link
from Manzini office 35 km away. Manzini plays out from satellite receivers,
studio and computer recorded material.

Info regarding the Swaziland Commercial Radio station. The two shortwave
transmitters are no longer on the air. Only the 50 kW MW transmitter. It
is running on low power as the Power Supply filter capacitor blew and they
have borrowed some spare, lower voltage ones that TWR had, just to get the
1377 KHz, MW transmitter going again. This MW transmitter is only on the
air in the evenings and early morning.

[HCDX] KIMF - does it exist yet?

2002-09-21 Thread Sean \(G4UCJ\)

Does anyone know the current operational status of KIMF in New Mexico? I
have found a sked (well a tentative one) but contact details are lacking. I
have an email address for, I think, the owner/operator but it went
unanswered (interestingly it didn't bounce). The last report I read was for
a site visit in August and nothing was to be found, not a mast or anything.
So is KIMF going to be on the air soon? thanks for your help!!
