[HCDX] DXpedition Report from Arctic Lapland

2020-12-04 Thread Mika Makelainen
A couple of weeks ago I returned from DXpedition AIH124 in Lapland, 400
km (250 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, up in the northernmost tip of
Finland.
At the "Aihkiniemi" cabin we have a total of 14 Beverage antennas, each
about 1 km (3,000 feet) in length, all pointing to different directions.
Jim Solatie, a fellow radioaficionado, joined me on this DXpedition.
I've just compiled a report of the expedition, explaining it all, with
photos of the stunning beauty of early winter in
Lapland:http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/aih124report.htm

[HCDX] DXPedition July 29-31, 2015

2015-08-03 Thread Ivo Observer
Dear visitors of the blog,
I spent a few days with my fellow Dx-er Georgi (LZ2GPB) in the remote village
of Patreshko, located in a mountainous region in Central Bulgaria. We did not
have any low-band antennas ready yet but we hang up a single Inverted V dipole
antenna for every broadcast band between 31 and 13 meters. We did record a few
videos and you may find them below. More to come in our forthcoming DXPedition
at the end of August when we will take advantage of full range of antennas,
covering longwave up to 30MHz.

[HCDX] DXpedition Loggings

2009-05-30 Thread Dave Valko

DXpedition at Black Bear Cabins, Cook Forest State Park, PA.
Wasn't very pleased when I found cabin #1 was very near the owners home even
though it was stated that it was at the end. The other cabins were
towards the north. The sloping hill to the northwest was thick with
Rhododendren. The woods were fairly open to the northeast, toward Rt. 36
about 600 feet away. I strung the 315' wire high in the trees over the
cabin road and through the woods towards the large yard bordering Rt. 36.
Coming out to the yard, I was horrified to find a powerline along the edge
of the yard/end of the woods. So I thought it best to double-back the wire
and stay clear of the powerline. Fortunately reception was free of noise
then. Used the RF Systems matching transformer and coax lead-in from the
porch into the cabin. When I tried powering up the laptop (AC), I got nasty
line noise. After trying several different outlets, I found there was no
noise using the outlet in the kitchen. I was able to bring the computer
over to the receiver but it still generated some noise. Speaking of the
computer, they had a wireless Internet access. The computer immediately
found the network, but I couldn't get on-line for some reason. It was
really frustrating. I did eventually get on-line, but only one afternoon.
On a good note, none of the appliances in the cabin generated any noise.
Not much of interest was heard. Can't except much in late May with
thunderstorms around the area.

[HCDX] DXpedition reports on DXing.info

2005-09-30 Thread Mika Mäkeläinen
Curious to know what other DXers around the world are hearing on
mediumwave and shortwave?

Check out the DXpeditions page at http://www.dxing.info/dxpeditions/ -
so far during 2005, a total of 24 DXpeditions from all around the world
have been added on the site with detailed logs, reports and photos. Tons
of fun and informative reports from the scorching Australian sun,
surviving among snakes and alligators, to freezing Arctic winters. And,
surprisingly, vice versa. Winters in Australia can be bitterly cold - at
least when you're DXpeditioning in a tent.

Other recently added resources include a Guide to identifying Japanese
NHK AM stations, complete with audio samples, by John H. Bryant. And
don't forget the latest news from the radio dial at
http://www.dxing.info/news/ (ABC on 7875 indeed by the Australian
military) as well as other new additions to the website at
http://www.dxing.info/about/whatsnew.dx (coins anyone?)

[HCDX] DXpedition to Grayland, WA 11 - 12 June, 2005

2005-06-12 Thread Guy Atkins

One thing you can count on with DXpeditions: there's always something
memorable about each one! Although trans-Pacific mediumwave was an almost
total bust, there seemed to be a propagational magnifying glass on Papua New
Guinea this weekend on shortwave. This was very fortunate, as June 11 was
the special inaugural broadcast and celebration of the new Wantok Radio
Light station in Port Moresby.

Walt Salmaniw and I occupied the usual DX Central motel room at Grayland;
we had guest appearances by John Bryant, staying at nearby Grayland Beach
State Park with his wife on the first segment of a 10-day camping/mini
DXpedition trip. The first night, Walt and I kept in touch with John via
GMRS radio transceivers. On the second night of DXing we had the chance to
try out John's new Porta-KAZ antenna alongside the Beverages. Although
designed for mediumwave, the KAZ was a surprisingly good performer on
shortwave, too. It is also a quiet antenna and fits within a small
footprint, suitable for most campsites.

The highlight of the trip for Walt and I was without a doubt the very
impressive reception of 1 Kw Wantok Radio Light, 7120 kHz. At home, both
Walt and I have had reception just above threshold levels. On the DXpedition
we were treated to hours on end of impressive signal levels, which made for
very enjoyable listening and recording for posterity.

On to the loggings, followed by a few trans-Pacific MW catches for
amusement:

AUSTRALIA 2310, 1305-1312, VL8A Alice Springs Jun 11 Discussion of
Australian politics by man and woman. Fair level. Parallel VL8T 2325 (fair)
and VL8K 2485 (poor). On June 12, all three 120 meter band Aussies were much
better, at 1044 UTC; persistent hum noted on VL8K transmitter. (Atkins-WA)

INDONESIA 3945, 1127-1130, RRI Ternate Jun 12 Soft Indonesian pop music to
male announcer with ID at 1130. Only a fair signal, with modest modulation.
Heard somewhat better on June 11. (Atkins-WA)

INDONESIA 4790, 1320-1333, RRI Fak Fak Jun 11 Strong signal of lagu romantik
music; female announcer at 1330 with mentions of Fak Fak. Presumed.
(Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 1737, 1143-1144, KUT, Kutubu Jun 12 CW aeronautical beacon
KUT noted with slow Morse code; fair signal level. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3220, 0938-0943, R. Morobe Jun 11 Tentative. Weak signal of
man talking in Pidgin. Not much to go on, but other PNGs were in at very
good levels during the same timeframe. Old country Gospel music at 0941.
(Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3235, 1145-1201, R. West New Britain Jun 12 Man in Pidgin
language with mentions of Kimbe and Papua New Guinea. Sing-sing PNG vocals
to 1156 announcements. Still playing soft music past 1200. Fair signal at
tune-in, but fading fast. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3260, 0845-0901, R. Madang Jun 11 Male announcer in Pigin
with mentions of 'Papua' at 0846. Bagpipe music (!) at 0850; ad for a brand
of 'fine tuna' at 0857, and more bagpipe music 0858. 'Radio Madang' ID at
0900. Fair to good signal. Noted June 12 with weak, noisy signal at 1052.
(Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3275, 1050-1055, R. Southern Highlands Jun 12 Tentative.
Noisy signal of what sounded like a live church service or transmission from
an auditorium. English language preacher or speaker, but too weak of a
signal to pull out much content. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3290, 1056-, R. Central Jun 12 Central was not heard last
night, but booming in this evening with a very good signal of EZL pop music
and male announcer in English. Conch shell blowing, then Into NBC national
news read by a man in English at 1100. Into a commentary program at 1105 by
a male announcer: 'Welcome to another edition of Around the Provinces.'
Noted parallel to NBC Port Moresby on their alternate frequency of 9675
(4890 absent). (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3325, 0944-0948, R. North Solomons Jun 11 Live or recorded
broadcast of a female representative being sworn-in to a governmental
assembly, and swearing allegiance to the country of Papua New Guinea. There
were many mentions of Bougainville. The programming sounded like a PNG
version of CSPAN. Fair to good signal. Also heard June 12 with a fair signal
at 1058. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3335, 0948-0959, R. East Sepik Jun 11 Nice Melanesian
sing-sing music at tune-in; male announcer in Pidgin 0953 with time check
and mentioning Papua New Guinea twice. ID for 'Radio East Sepik' at 0959. At
1003, the announcer mentioned 'Wantok Radio Light dedication' in the midst
of a Pidgin sentence. Powerhouse signal!. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3365, 1131-, R. Milne Bay Jun 12 Nice to hear Milne Bay
again, as my last log of them was nearly one year ago. Very pleasant PNG
vocals and accoustic guitar at tune-in. Man in Pidgin 1136 with mentions of
upcoming programs, times, etc. Pacific islands flavored music 1139; weather
forecast for Milne Bay 1140. Good signal level initially, but deteriorating
by 1140. (Atkins-WA)

PAPUA NEW GUINEA 3385,

[HCDX] DXpedition Logs - Ocean City State Park, WA - Feb 7-8

2005-02-10 Thread Guy Atkins

OCEAN CITY STATE PARK DXPEDITION - Feb. 7-8, 2005

What a difference a week makes! Seven days earlier, trans-Pacific MW
reception was at the best level since the amazing reception of last
September and October.

A few of us in the Pacific Northwest listen for TP hets or audio from our
Victoria, BC and Tacoma, WA area homes for signs of Asian or Down-Under
signals. Last week we were wishing we were at Grayland or another coastal
DXpedition site, knowing that our good conditions inland were equivalent to
excellent reception at the coast.
I couldn't get away until Sunday the 7th (UTC), and unfortunately the
propagation conditions were degraded due to a recurring sunspot region and
associated geostorms. Still it was an enjoyable trip, with sunny weather and
spectacular ocean sunsets. The DX highlight was morning longpath African
reception on 60 meters lasting far past local sunrise.

Mediumwave was almost entirely DU; the only Japanese station heard was JOAK
Tokyo on 594. All signal levels were modest, without the strong, long
reception that characterizes better openings. On this DXpedition, it was
common for a station to rise above the noise for a half minute or less, and
then fade back into the muck for long stretches of time.

Except for the longpath Africa reception, the tropical bands were below
average. The Papua New Guinea regionals were at low levels on the 7th, and
stronger the next night. However, the weaker Indonesian targets like RPDT2
Manggarai (2960) and RSPK Ngada (2899) were totally absent.

Ocean City State Park is north of the well-known Grayland DXpedition site,
and across Grays Harbor on the sandy, flat Ocean Shores pennisula. Most
visitors head straight for the resorts and casinos of the pennisula, but the
smart ones do their gambling by stringing out a Beverage antenna and DXing!
An empty logbook is cheaper than an empty wallet if things don't work out...

MEDIUMWAVE
-
558 FIJI R. Fiji One, Feb 7 1445 - Low level island music of acoustical
guitar and choral singing; woman announcer in pres. Fijian. Noted parallel
to 639 and 684, all with weak signals. I found it interesting that all three
frequencies began and ended their long fades into the noise at the same
time, and then rose again at 1454. More guitar and choral singing over the
top of the hour. (Atkins-WA)

594 AUSTRALIA 3WV Horsham, Feb 8 1550 - Poor-fair, with woman announcer in
English, and parallel to 738 2NR Grafton. (Atkins-WA)

594 JAPAN JOAK Tokyo, Feb 8 1523 - First and only Japanese MW station of the
DXpedition, in at a poor-fair level. Man and woman with talk in Japanese
interspersed with English comments; seemed to be discussing aviation or
flight. Even without a northwest Beverage, the Japanese and other North
Asian stations are usually heard on a west Beverage antenna also (although
at weaker level) if propagation permits. (Atkins-WA)

639 AUSTRALIA 8RN Katherine, Feb 7 1502 - Two men with talk or interview in
English, talking about movies and taking phone calls. Parallel to 4RN 792.
Fair, and competing with Fiji R. One on the frequency. Also heard 2/8 at
fair level. (Atkins-WA)

639 FIJI R. Fiji One, Feb 8 1505 - Better reception than last night 2/7,
with a fair-good signal on peaks. Beautiful island vocals and instrumentals,
and song introductions by man in Fijian, parallel to 558 and 684. Fiji
giving way again to 8RN Katherine by 1515. (Atkins-WA)

684 FIJI R. Fiji One, Feb 8 1509 - Heard during a brief peak with island
music and male announcer in Fijian, parallel to 639. Poor. (Atkins-WA)

729 AUSTRALIA 5RN Adelaide, Feb 7 1513 - Woman announcer with mention of
'ABC news and sports' at tune-in; advertisement or promo, and then signal
took a nose dive. Poor-fair. (Atkins-WA)

738 AUSTRALIA 2NR Grafton, Feb 8 1544 - Woman announcer with talk in
English, poor level, but clearly parallel to 594 3WV Horsham. (Atkins-WA)

738 TAHITI RFO Papeete, Feb 8 0500 - I checked a number of times for audio
from this South Pacific regular, but never heard more than a strong het.
This is unusual, given the presence of audio from other MW stations in the
South Pacific region. (Atkins-WA)

774 AUSTRALIA 3LO Melbourne, Feb 8 1612 - Fair during very brief peaks, with
man and woman announcers in English. Parallel to 891 5AN Adelaide.
(Atkins-WA)

792 AUSTRALIA 4RN Brisbane, Feb 7 1519 - Aussie-accent announcers in English
with talk, parallel to 639. Fair. (Atkins-WA)

846 AUSTRALIA 2RN Canberra, Feb 7 1525 - Briefly peaking above the slop,
with a male announcer interviewing a woman, apparently about her visit to
Africa. Parallel to 639. Fair signal. (Atkins-WA)

846 KIRIBATI T3K1 R. Kiribati, Feb 7 0950 - Old US country music at tune-in;
female announcer in pres. I-Kiribati lang. with possible mention of
'frequency'. Into log drumming music with male choral vocals. A fair signal,
but it took the inevitable nose dive before the top of the hour. (Atkins-WA)

891 AUSTRALIA 5AN Adelaide, Feb 7

[HCDX] DXpedition in Townsville, North Qld. Australia

2004-11-11 Thread Craig Edwards
Townsville, North Queensland, Australia

DXpedition

Craig Edwards - 'DX Crocodile Hunter'

October 2004

After three productive one night stands during August and September at my
favourite campsite 50 km north of Townsville I figured it was time for an
extended stay. So the wife and I headed off and set up the DX HQ tent on Friday
lunchtime with plans to stay there until Monday morning.

At this later time of the year I decided to camp right on the shore of the
beach as this would give me a 100 metre buffer from the swamp. After all it is
the start of the Crocodile mating season - last thing we wanted was a horny
male croc looking for some action. It was good to move the tent as our normal
spot is normally covered in fallen leaves and considering that death adders
love this habitat and they are now out of winter hibernation, I didn't fancy
coming across any of these critters. My main concern was eastern taipans, I had
to put the EWEs out in sand dune scrubland which they are rather fond of. They
are also active daytime hunters and are too just out of hibernation.

Sunset Day 1

On the first day of high school you used to worry with anticipation. Will I be
able to make friends? Will I get bullied? Will there be any girls who like me?
Akin to this is the anticipation a DXer feels before session 1 of day 1 of any
DXpedition - Is this the right spot? What about the noise? What about
conditions? Does the tape deck work? and MOST OF ALL is the antenna right?
Especially as I'm persisting/compromising by using the EWE rather than the
beverage. Well I was pleased with the early appearance of regulars as soon as
WWV on 2.5MHz started to give some RF, namely the Mexicans on 1570 and 1700 and
KHPY 1670. Having successfully harvested the higher end of the band the past
few one nighters in August and September I headed under 1 MHz. This produced
WWL 870 and some new west coasters for me like KCBS 740, KJRB 790, WBAP 820,
KGET 970 and KFWB 980. But the huge highlight for me was my first ever Alaskan
- KICY 850. I've been trying to land Alaska for years and it's been virtually
impossible from the Coorong or my odd visit to Victoria.

Sunset Day 2

Well low and behold, with KICY putting in a solid signal and even making KOA
tough to log, up pops my second ever Alaskan - KENI 650. Another couple of new
west coasters for me like KFMB 760 and KYAA 1200 rarely logged due to WOAI
being a regular. Managed to add CHMB 1320 which is again rare due to usual
dominance of KCTC. The amazing reception of a North American on a 9kHz split
frequency of KLOK 1170 was not only a sign of good conditions, but also a sign
of the amazing reception to come the following and final evening.

Sunset Day 3

With one night to go I was already satisfied with my haul of new stateside
stations. So I decided to totally focus of the Australian 9kHz split
frequencies to see what might pop up. A few frequencies could be ruled out like
4QN 630 kHz 50kW my local ABC station here in Townsville, 4AT 720 kHz is a semi
local ABC station which can be heard on a midday band scan, 900 kHz was
splatterated out by 4TAB 891 kHz also here in Townsville, 4RO 990 kHz which is
very strong here in the evenings, 1260 4MW just up north in the Torres Strait
Islands and local 4KZ on 1620 kHz. So this only left 810, 1080, 1170, 1350,
1440 and 1530 to monitor which was very manageable. Funnily enough 810 was not
producing any Aussie stations but RRI Merauke of all things at very much
armchair level! Well I'm delighted and still amazed to report that the
remaining frequencies all produced stations which at times totally dominated
the Australians from around 0700-0830 - it was the most enjoyable 1½ hours I
think I've had apart from the breakthrough European morning at the Coorong in
1993. I logged KRLD 1080, KFAQ KLOK 1170, WTOU 1350, unid with FOX on 1440
and KFBK 1530. Just to top the end of the evening off, there was the rare
appearance of east coasters WHAM 1180, WQEW 1560 and WTNI 1640 which I logged
for the first time. Well in 3 nights 21 new North Americans - all in all a top
weekend!

580 0753 KJAL Pago Pago, American Samoa. Christian Experience program, a
regular one this weekend but never very good due NBC PNG splatter on 585 1/10
(CE)

650 0925 KENI Anchorage, Alaska. Well after hearing my 1st ever Alaskan
on the 1st night of the DXpedition, how good is this, my 2nd ever Alaskan on
the 2nd night. Poor with political newstalk then on half hour News Radio 650
KENI ID 2/10 (CE)

660 0820 KTNN Window Rock, AZ. Fair with Midnight Trucking Network show
1/10 (CE)

670 0900 KBOI Boise, ID. Good here with KBOI Ids and Road Star news 3/10
(CE)

740 0828 KCBS San Francisco, CA. Poor with Dr DJ with talk show and 'all
news all the time' ID 1/10 (CE)

760 1030 KFMB San Diego, CA. No sign of usual KGU, 760 KFMB ID and

[HCDX] DXpedition Loggings from OCSP, Washington State USA, Jan. 11-12

2004-01-15 Thread Guy Atkins

I was fortunate to hit a window of decent weather for this 2-night
DXpedition to Ocean City State Park, WA. This park is north of the Grayland
DXpedition location, and across Gray's Harbor from the fishing village of
Westport. See map for location: http://short.uigui.com/524 The previous
weekend, a major snowstorm hit the Puget Sound area and even the coast was 2
to 3 inches deep in snow with temperatures in the 20's. However, within a
couple of days the weather returned to the more seasonal upper 40's
temperatures for the WA coast during the winter.

This was my first DC-only DXpedition in nearly three years, so I spent
considerable time making sure I had all the power cables, connectors, etc.
needed, and that my two deep-cycle RV batteries could still hold a good
charge. (Since the technology boom hit Pacific NW DXpeditions a few years
ago, the total power requirement for necessary equipment g has
skyrocketed.) I fired up my flameless catalytic propane heater to make sure
it still worked, and also bought a new set of foul weather raingear to help
me survive the sideways rain that often blows across the Washington beaches
in winter.

Propagation on this outing was definitely in favor of shortwave, despite
repeated bandscans on mediumwave throughout the DXpedition, looking for
juicy possibilities. Reception mostly favored the Pacific Islands region on
mediumwave, but the countries heard included: New Zealand, Japan, China,
Tahiti, Kiribati, Tonga, Marshall Islands, South Korea, Thailand, and a
Papua New Guinea beacon on 1737 kHz.

I was expecting the usual longpath African reception from the coast this
time of year and I wasn't disappointed. Unfortunately, DX didn't linger long
enough after local sunrise to provide any West Africans other than Nigeria
on 4770.

fanfare again 1636, then mention of 'Saudi' by female and
