[HCDX] Radio Canada International: 60 Years of Radio Worldwide

2006-03-18 Thread Mike Terry
>From the RCI website:

As we mark the 60th anniversary of Radio Canada International, I'd like to
congratulate and thank all RCI staff-from the service's early pioneers to
its present-day contributors-for their work, vision and passion. I'd also
like to thank Internet users from all over the world who visit our website
each day to listen to our programs, read our reports and consult our global
databank, a formidable research tool containing over 20,000 links to nearly
200 countries.

I invite you to visit our special 60th anniversary section which was
produced by the CBC Archives Website team in collaboration with RCI staff.
It contains a wealth of radio and TV clips-with different selections in
English and French-that look back at the landmark events of the past 60
years on RCI. Journalists like René Lévesque and Peter Gzowski as well as
personalities Andy Warhol and Wayne Gretzky are just a few of the stars of
yesteryear you'll be able to see and hear again. Be sure not to miss this
fascinating walk down memory lane!

Jean Larin
Executive Director
Radio Canada International

At http://archives.cbc.ca/IDD-1-69-1598/life_society/rci/ there are various
archive news features.

In February 1945, the "Voice of Canada" spoke to the world for the first
time. The CBC International Service was founded to broadcast to Armed Forces
overseas in the Second World War. At war's end the radio service focused on
telling the world about Canada in over a dozen languages. Despite budget
cuts and critics who accused it of employing communists or operating as a
government mouthpiece, the service now called Radio Canada International has
persevered. CBC Archives looks back on RCI's 60 years on shortwave.

1.Broadcasting to the world - The International Service of the CBC launches
with an address from Prime Minister Mackenzie King. (Radio; runs 10:57)

2. A signal from home - The shortwave service brings news to Canadians
overseas after the Second World War. (Radio; runs 5:16)

3. René Lévesque reports from Korea - An International Service correspondent
entices the Korean Army to sing for him. (Radio; runs 1:55)

4. Broadcasting behind the Iron Curtain - The shortwave service goes to
great lengths to reach listeners in communist countries. (TV; runs 12:10)

5. Rawhide salutes the shortwave service - Max Ferguson takes a comical look
at the "voice of Canada" on its 15th anniversary. (Radio; runs 19:48)

6. Internal scrutiny and External Affairs - Have there ever been communists
at the International Service? (Radio; runs 9:01)

7. Warhol paints Gretzky - Sports fans and art collectors unite! RCI reports
on a gallery opening featuring Andy Warhol's portraits of the Great One.
(Radio; runs 3:12)

8. RCI responds to China in crisis - Chinese broadcasts are rushed to air
after the massacre in Tiananmen Square. (TV; runs 2:09)

9. On the chopping block - Staff and listeners defend the shortwave service
as extinction seems certain after a cut in funding. (TV; runs 5:57)

10. Last-minute reprieve - A new funding formula gives RCI another year on
the air, but there are no promises beyond that. (Radio; runs 5:43)

[HCDX] Radio Canada International - 60 Years of Radio Worldwide

2005-02-19 Thread Mike Terry
Montreal
February 17 2005

On February 25, 2005, Radio Canada International will be celebrating its
60th anniversary. RCI's history is one
of remarkable successes and rich anecdotes. It's a history worth
discovering... and rediscovering. Did you know that Radio Canada
International
has attracted some of the leading lights in Canadian journalism over the
years, including future Quebec premier René Lévesque and legendary CBC host
Peter Gzowski?

Some might recall that Prime Minister W.L. Mackenzie King set up a
shortwave service during the Second World War to inform and entertain our
troops overseas with programming from Canada. But few people are aware that
RCI also played a key role in promoting Canadian music. After making its
debut
on the international scene in 1945, RCI quickly became an ambassador for
homegrown artists. Many famous names in Canadian music, including Oscar
Peterson and Glenn Gould, made some of their first recordings in RCI
studios.

-
  RCI Today

- RCI produces programming in nine languages.

- More than 300 hours of programming are broadcast each week via
shortwave, satellite and www.RCInet.ca .

- RCI programs are rebroadcast in over 75 countries through its
300 partner stations.

- RCI airs special programming for listeners in Florida and the
Caribbean, featuring the best of CBC Radio One and Radio-Canada's
Première Chaîne.

- Listeners from all over the world participate in RCI phone-in shows.

- RCI broadcasts language courses for the whole family.

- The daily Cyberjournal provides a roundup of the key news stories.

- RCI oversees the Canadian Institute for Training in Public
Broadcasting, which offers radio, television and new-media training
to journalists, managers and technicians in emerging democracies.

- Internet users can listen to live and archived programs in nine
languages at www.RCInet.ca and explore a brand-new databank
containing over 20,000 links pointing to nearly 200 countries.

A Special 60th Anniversary Contest for
18 - to 30-Year-Olds Who Want to Build a Better World...

International Development Week (January 30 to February 5) and the UN-
sponsored International Year of Microcredit 2005 will be marked in an
original
way by Développement international Desjardins (DID) and Radio Canada
International... the two have teamed up to launch Building the Future Now!,
a
major worldwide contest for 18- to 30-year-olds.

What can we do in 2005 to build a fairer, more prosperous, more
equitable
world? Young people around the world will be challenged to answer this
ambitious question in a short essay or illustration, giving them a chance to
win one of two international development education missions organized by DID
in partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Prizes are valued at $15,000, and contestants can enter by visiting
www.RCInet.ca .

RCI has also produced a series of short radio features, consisting of
two-to three-minute interviews with young adults whose lives have benefited
from microcredit. They hail from Africa, Latin America and Asia, and can be
heard on RCI's international airwaves throughout the year.

Relive the best of RCI on CD and on the Web...

We also invite you to visit a special 60th anniversary section of the
RCI
website, jointly produced by the CBC Archives team and RCI staff. It
contains
a wealth of radio and TV clips-with different selections in English and
French-
that look back at the landmark events of the past 60 years on RCI. Judith
Jasmin, Maurice Chevalier and René Lévesque are just a few of the stars of
yesteryear you'll be able to see and hear again. Be sure not to miss this

[HCDX] Radio Canada International,BC Relay Station -- tail wagging the dog?

2003-08-14 Thread mhev
Radio Canada International, BC Relay Station.

http://CBC.am/rci-bc.htm

For covering Australasia, it seems that an HR 4 / 3 / 1 is recommended, at
500 kw. RCI could literally overpower (with respect to DBi field strength)
RNZI or Radio Australia if the proper frequencies were chosen.

-- text --

Technical Note
The city of Esquimalt, BC was chosen as a transmitter site for software
related reasons. The final location for the RCI relay station is not set in
stone, as there are many factors that will affect the final placement of
this relay station. It is expected that Tofino, Bella Bella, Masset or other
coastal BC cities could be chosen for the relay station (s).

The reasons for other sites to be chose are based on the following varibles:

- geography : all sea path to Asia Pacific, a requirement with respect to
reducing transmitter output power requirements

- geology : swampy or near swampy conditions (for high HF reflectivty), near
zero (1 in 750 years) tsunami risk, minimal eartquake / rockfall / land
slippage or any other related geological risks, no tall moutains to
interfere with signal transmission path ...

- electrical : electrisity supply (a 500 kw transmitter needs ~ 1.25
megawatts to run at full power), avoidance of population centres (to comply
with IEEE and EBU recommendations on exposure to EM fields)

- accessability and defensibiliy of transmitter site (s) with respect to
paved roads, useful for staff morale -- nearby urban centres have more
services

- land easily donatable by BC or Federal gouverment, not subject to any
onging first nations land claims processes

Secondary relay station sites : Kitimaat, BC suggests itself for targeting
the Russian Far East, China and other parts of North Asia.

All of these computations assume that an ALLISS transmission system is used.

ALLISS only requires 15 ha per module. One ALLISS module could solve 60 % of
RCI's transmission needs in the Asia Pacific, and Latin American regions.

However, the ALLISS system lacks the directivity of a multi-segmented curtan
array.

A second relay station some distance (100+ kms) away that would possess:

1 x HRS 12 / 6 / 1 (9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 21 mhz) to North Asia
1 x HRS 12 / 6 / 1 (7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 mhz) to Latin America

Such a relay station would increase directivity and audibiliy in these
regions by 12 db or more, when compared to HRS 4 / 4 / 1 antenna systems.
