My experience with Wine and Winsock is that if the problem is with Winsock, don't use Wine. The native Winsock and WSock32 dlls do not work with Wine. Also, the builtin Winsock dlls do not work very well in anything except Win98 mode. I made an incorrect assumption that TransGaming (a variant of Wine) worked better.
