IMO large vehicles keep gas prices lower, big oil is not going to live with
lower profits which is what would happen if all cars got 50mph, they would
raise the rates to keep profits the same, we would get 50 mph but would still
cost us the same each year to operate. >:-}

Running more than one AV engine on machine is not advisable. There is no
significant evidence that I've found that running multiple scanners
provides
better protection. But even if it did, the performance degradation on a
machine
running multiple AV engines is significant. Google that one and read

better
virus detection while of the three, Kaspersky has the best Trojan

You should also be careful with which files you copy over. I would say
if your checking email and someone sends you a file and its non
executable that's ok to copy over if you scan it on www.virustotal.com .
You really can't trust a machine that is completely exposed for a
unknown amount of time. But if you have a vmware image that you know is
clean and you start it up and you know you haven't run any rouge
processes then that's a lot more trust worthy. Of course its still
possible you could have been infected with a worm exploiting a backdoor
but chances are very low for that.

Oh by the way vmware has free software for desktops now so everyone
should be running a vmware session for all their other stuff. Maybe even
run a linux desktop and windows in a vmware session.

IMAGINE getting inside the mind of a shark: swimming silently through
the ocean, sensing faint electrical fields, homing in on the trace of
a scent, and navigating through the featureless depths for hour after
hour.

We may soon be able to do just that via electrical probes in the
shark's brain. Engineers funded by the US military have created a
neural implant designed to enable a shark's brain signals to be
manipulated remotely, controlling the animal's movements, and perhaps
even decoding what it is feeling.

15% of the worlds population uses 90% of the worlds consumables.

Why are there poor societies? People live in resource poor places, or
the system of government in the area is corrupt or unable to improve the
quality of life for the citizenry.

Americans are so busy feeding the throw-away consumer treadmill, they
are completely out of touch with the reality of the world situation. And
the marketers (Madison Ave,) are doing their best to keep the wool
pulled over "our" eyes.

I would say that it's not just America, but all "Western" societies.

Kids refusing to go to school because they don't have the latest $250
sneakers. I have a friend who loves Tommy Hillfigure <--SP He only buys
Tommy clothing.

Then that kid is out of style. Tommy Hilfiger has not been "cool" in
quite a long time.

That said, I have had some Tommy clothing that has been through hell and
back. It's held up well under use - probably better than clothes that I
could have bought at Wal-Mart. While the clothing may be "stylish"
oftentimes it is also made better. Something that is a little more
expensive but lasts is better than something cheap but only lasts two or
three washes.

He thinks his "worth" can be measured by his "stuff". Get the right car,
get the girl. Wear the "latest" shirt, you are a success.

Unfortunately right now our society places a high value on image.

You think any other nation does as much for environmental conservation

Re: [H] google search for "failure"

2006-03-02 Thread Al

It's called, "Asleep in the American Dream".

The weather guy on the local NBC affiliate said the other day as they
were discussing something caught on video tape, " I mean, come on. Who
doesn't have a video camera these days?

"I had to email the station head;
http://9news.com/company/contact/mc.asp
and ask,

"What about the thousands of viewers who are struggling to put rice on
the dinner table?". "Where is their video camera?"

15% of the worlds population uses 90% of the worlds consumables.

Americans are so busy feeding the throw-away consumer treadmill, they
are completely out of touch with the reality of the world situation. And
the marketers (Madison Ave,) are doing their best to keep the wool
pulled over "our" eyes.

Kids refusing to go to school because they don't have the latest $250
sneakers. I have a friend who loves Tommy Hillfigure <--SP He only buys
Tommy clothing.

I told him he should be getting paid to "bill-board" their brand, not
pay them for the privilege. He has no idea what I mean But he is
sold. Let me repeat, SOLD.

He thinks his "worth" can be measured by his "stuff". Get the right car,
get the girl. Wear the "latest" shirt, you are a success.

It can't last forever, nothing does. Americans are in for a "balancing"
faze. Our unrealistically high standard of living must come in line with
what the planet can support.

Someday, I hope we learn the difference between compassionate,
responsible capitalism, and blind greed capitalism.

I mean who do we think we are? Are we entitled to cut all the old
growth forrest, extract all the crude oil, etc.. in 150 years, leaving
nothing to our great grand children but debt to China?

Asleep in the American Dream, a nightmare in the making. Correction are
in order and ta king place now. Ask GM.

You could try to use SysIntenals utils to see what is open/accessed:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsFile.html

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html

Also "net.exe" has a file option for listing shared file in use

"net file"

Any pointers appreciated, going in AM. My first thought are to check out the
briefcase and then maybe a office repair.
Thanks

I think the point is that neither side in politics has much to be proud about.

How can I be totally sure they are clean if the AV software is only
60%? Do you have some suggestions for looking at all the processes
on a computer and finding out what they are?

Re: [H] Hardrive failure..

2006-03-02 Thread Stan Zaske
Thats the one I have manufactured Dec. 2004. I recieved my replacement
finally and have my box up and running again but its a refurbished drive
also originally made in Dec. '04 (I could just see through to the
original label).

However, I'm already having problems with it as S.M.A.R.T. disk monitor
says it's ok until I click on the button to give additional IDE drive
information. It just shuts itself down which is the first time I've seen
that from any of the drives I've used it with. I'm going to contact
SmartMon's support guys and see what they say about this weird behavior.
I'm afraid the drive is borked somehow and made it through quality
control with a problem. Jeez, if it isn't one thing...

Yeah, that is bad.

My past Maxtors are still running strong 24/7 (couple of 120, 160 and
200 gigers).
However, I've had two 250GB-16MB buffer drives die on me around the
same time

last December. Needless to say, they've been RMA'ed and sold off. ;)
