Just wait 'til vista comes out and get/build a new machine on that platform.
Then upgrade. That way, you won't have to let your hard earned dollars burn
a hole in your pockets. :)

[H] mem question

2006-10-26 Thread dhs

OK so I have a really old machine. I'd like to think that it might be "PC66"
but now I'm not
so sure. It is EDO ram. NOT SDRAM.

Got some new DIMMS today, but they do not fit. They were/are SDRAM. At least
they are
based on where the notches in the DIMM(s) are. Have RMA needs and is in
process (tomorrow).
They were EDO by chip specs, though.

Does anyone have pointers/links to when/what the JIDEC specs are for DIMMS?
Looking for
the spacing of the locating notches and/or socket specs for the 168-pin pwbas.

I've forgotten way too much. I apologize. Just want to get a very OLD
dinosaur to run
W2K/SP4 @512MB, which mpc.com tells me is possible.

I need to retire from this hobby.. One day maybe!
Thanks,
Duncan

The first EDO were on SIMMS = Single Inline Memory Module = FPM (Fast Page
Mode) and EDO (Extended Data Out) that improved the speed of FPM. Most
earlier EDO SIMM boards you could run either FPM or EDO SIMMS, but you were
advised not to mix them. EDO SIMMS have to be run in pairs.

Next came EDO DIMMS and then SDRAM DIMMS

Sounds like you have EDO SIMMS. You can buy these on Ebay up to 128 X 2 =
256 but rare. Most were up to 64 X 2 = 128.

This makes me think back to the first time I ever ordered RAM for my PC, a
AST 486DX33 in 1993. 4 megs of Samsung FPM for about 160 dollars.

2006-10-26 Thread dhs

WinterLight,
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Excuse me.
I do know just what I have.
They are not SIMMS.
They are DIMMS. 168 pins. Notch spacing is the important part!
No, I do need EDO DIMMS. With 168 pins, AND, the spacing twixt the center
notch and the edge notch to be correct. It's that 0.050 inch that counts for
everything. I hope to get there. I may even have to go ECC to get there.
Shucks. ... :)
Yes, I do understand the history. To bad this old blaster can not take RIMMs,
plain old SDRAM DIMMs, or DDR DIMMs. Just too bad. I'll march on.
Thanks,
Duncan

Re: [H] mem question

2006-10-26 Thread Harry McGregor

Hi Duncan,

EDO dimms came in two versions, both 168Pin. You could have 3/3.3 volt,
and 5 volt EDO dimms.

Finding EDO dimms over 64MB can be hard, and over 128 MB without being
registered ECC (both must be supported by the chipset). Most chipsets
of that time could only address 64mbit chips, which resulted in a 64MB 8
chip dimm or 128MB 16 chip dimm.

What chipset is on the board, and how many slots? Does it have both
72pin simm slots, and one or two dimm slots?
