[H] "?"s showing up in web pages

2008-04-28 Thread Brian Weeden
I've had this problem before and it went away but I never figured out what
caused it. Now it's back. When rendering certain web pages with Firefox
(any version, using 3b5 now) certain characters are rendered as "?" instead
of what they should be, usually apostrophes. The same page renders fine in
IE.

Any ideas?

I get these appearing in emails from my mother. It's not understanding
the character coding or fonts... I guess. I just ignore it.

I suppose. I will say that it worked fine for a number of years but it
may have been corrupted.

No, I have never heard of this AnyDVD.

I've done both so I guess DRM can be safely ruled out.

Interesting. I know Vista was pretty bad. I guess I'll wait for the
early birds to run SP3 before I do but I was looking forward to it,
everything I read basically stated SP3 helped XP run even faster.

Re: [H] DRM or DVD from Hell?

2008-04-28 Thread Greg Sevart
What DRM is included in SP3?

They changed the product activation model to allow you to install without a
key. That's a good move, since it lets you use it in test/demo environments
without a key.

They updated it to work with NAP (Network Access Protection), allowing
organizations to start using NAP to protect their corporate networks without
having to move all clients to Vista.

Kernel mode cryptographic functionality...I suppose that other vendors could
tap into this to strengthen their existing DRM, but it really isn't
something revolutionary.

They disabled many known activation cracks...boo hoo, if you stole the OS,
you deserve a brick, period.

It's yet more FUD coming from people without a clue. The "DRM" in Vista that
most people claim to hate is the protected content path for encrypted high
definition video delivery (which by itself ONLY comes into play if you are
playing back protected content, ala HD-DVD/BRD). It's so tightly integrated
that MS would have had to backport the entire video driver model to XP.
That's an absolutely tremendous undertaking, and is absolutely NOT a part of
SP3. This bullshit probably came from the idiots who claimed that MP3s would
no longer play if you upgraded to Vista...pathetic. I hate DRM as much as
the next guy, maybe more, but let's try to separate the facts from the BS,
can we?

no bricks here please but it figures sp3 is more about WGN then making the
product better, just like Vista.

I wonder about the next generation.

Actually there is another benefit to SP3. If you've ever had to to a clean
SP3 install recently you'll find that you spend quite a bit of time
downloading hotfixes and security updates and rebooting and downloading more
updates. Over 100 I think at the last count.

So SP3 rolls all those up into one and means if you slipstream it into an XP
install CD a much easier and faster install.

[H] Running 3 monitors in Windows XP Pro

2008-04-28 Thread James Maki
I searched and cannot find a definitive answer to the question of running 3
monitors in Windows XP Pro.

I have an Abit IP35 Pro (socket 775) board with two PCI-e x16 slots. One
operates at x16, the other at x4. I am currently running a dual monitor
setup with a DVI 19" 4x3 screen and a vga 15" 4x3 screen connected to a
Sapphire HD 2600 Pro video card. I also have a Westinghouse 42" LCD 1080p
television that I would like to hook up for occasional use to this system.
It is currently attached to my htpc, but I would like to be able to utilize
the extra screen at times for my main system.

Can I add another HD 2600 Pro video card to the x4 PCI-e x16 slot? I plan on
switching the LCD TV to the card on the x16 slot and moving the older vga
monitor to the x4 slot card.

I am not much of a gamer. I recently purchased Call of Duty War Chest
(incudes CoD 1, CoD 1 expansion pak, and CoD 2). I have no problems running
the game on my current system. In fact, it runs just fine on the HTPC
utilizing on-board video to run the 42" LCD. So my video needs are modest. I
would just like to be able to hook up the 42" LCD to my main system on
occasion while maintaining my current 2 panel setup.

Thoughts, suggestions, caveats? All appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim Maki

Rick,

Thanks for the response. I have several additional questions--

1) Do all 4 monitors show up Properties | Settings?
2) Are all the video cards of similar vintage/type?
3) Are you using PCIe (x16 or x4) or a mixture of PCIe, AGP and/or PCI?

Thanks

1 yes
2. I've done it with all from the same mfg & model to a complete mix
3. these were 2-3 year mother boards, I do know it was a mix of AGP & PCI
(I'm no longer working for that company.)

If was going to setup a new system, I would buy:

My internet PC is running two dual head cards. Both Matrox; one AGP and
one PCI.

Thanks for the response. It seems that multiple video cards to drive
multiple monitors is successful.

After finally figuring out the correct search phrase (PCI-E X16 x4
bandwidth) I found several sites that discuss using a pci-e x16 video card
in a x16/x4 bandwidth slots.

Thanks for the help.
