Re: [H] DOCSIS 3.0 - Charter Communications
My Motorola cable modem is about 6 years old if not older. Might be time for an upgrade and I have Comcast overpriced service as well. Thanks for the info. They claim they give 12MB with the basic one, but I've never seen it, and don't know anyone who has except one guy in California who is in one of my vets groups. He, also, has the basic service(first level, I guess). He has Comcast's rental modem, which is ver. 3.0. Jeff Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2010 6:36 AM Subject: Re: [H] DOCSIS 3.0 - Charter Communications I just noticed that this is one of the two modems that charter supports. I know it's mostly an exercise in futility for most people on this list to call tech support. :) Just out of curiosity, how much is the rental charge?
Re: [H] UPS Deals?
Sorry for the delay. Constantly hitting a Surge Protector with surges WILL use it up. Most are sacrificial devices. Each hit grinds down what it will do next time. And the better ones come with lights to tell you when they are gone... If at all possible, this should be handled another way, maybe like a different circuit to isolate the surge farther downstream from the protector or computer. I'm assuming they were plugged into the same wall outlet or something? Rick Glazier From: Hunter, Gary February 18, 2010 10:30 PM Thanks for the advice Duncan. Got my new surge protectors delivered today and guess what. When the Laser printer kicks in the PC no longer turns off :) So I guess the surge protection on the old UPS is not up to scratch :-)

[H] Vista install question
Am I right in remembering that I can use any version of Vista to install any other version? (So I can use a Vista Business CD and if I enter a Vista Home Premium COA number, I'll end up with Vista Home Premium?) T
[H] New Fans!
I am getting ripe to order new 80mm cooling fans for my LAN machines. Most/all of them have been running well for the past 12 or so years. I now have two that have cooling fans with fan bearings going bad. I need 18 80mm fans. !So many choices! I have already decided to buy 9 Noctua NF-R8-1800 fans from Newegg (N82E16835608006). I have wanted to test this brand for the past 3 yrs based on comments here on our List. Yes, these are expensive. But, I'd like to have some practical experience with this vendor. Where I now get really foggy is with the remaining 9 fans. I thought it would be a simple decision of fan bearings. I prefer ball bearings. Nope! Now I have fan bearing choices I just can not picture in my mind. And, 1 choice seems to have some hidden electronics in the wiring that may vary actual fan speed. Hmm. So, I am a bit confused. I have seen the newer 3/4 pin interface and a newer 4/5 pin fan interface. Scary this is 4Me. I own 3-pin cooling fan interfaces! I seek List opinion/suggestion! All my choices are from Newegg. I'll order my Noctua fans now, and, wait for comments, suggestions, and opinions! Thank you, Duncan
Re: [H] New Fans!
I have some of those Noctua fans in the 120mm size in my system. very quiet. I can't comment on bearing quality other than to say they are quiet. That's majorly important to me. On 3/8/2010 2:17 PM, DSinc wrote: Noctua NF-R8-1800

18 months ago I got a bunch of Enermax Marathon 80mm Fan - Magnetic Bearing = $4.55 from Monoprice.com and I really like them. They are magnetic bearing so the fan blades just pull out for easy cleaning, no part to part contact, which makes them quiet. They don't move all that fast but for me they don't have to. w At 11:17 AM 3/8/2010, you wrote: I am getting ripe to order new 80mm cooling fans for my LAN machines. I strongly prefer fans with fluid bearings (FDB). Very quiet, very good durability. I don't know what's good in the 80mm size, but I love the Scythe S-Flex 120mm FDB fans. The SilenX ones are even better, but more expensive. -Original Message- From: hardware-boun...@hardwaregroup.com [mailto:hardware- boun...@hardwaregroup.com] On Behalf Of DSinc Sent: Monday, March 08, 2010 1:17 PM To: Hardware Group Subject: [H] New Fans!
