Sounds like it can't handle any real load. There's no way I know of
to test this perfectly without expensive test equipment, but I'd say
you've done enough.

Agreed, with a PSU I just verify that the problem follows the power
supply and then ship the thing back.

Thanks Thane and Christopher. I have initiated the RMA process. Hope the
replacement holds up better.

[H] Really simple email questions?

2010-07-12 Thread DSinc

OK. I've followed this LIST for years.
I am still confused about EMAIL.
I know who my current ISP is. I know that they pass EMAIL off to;
Yahoo.com. I know that Yahoo.com has their 'own' restrictions.

ISP: Bellsouth.net
Upstream: ATT.net (???)
Mail provider: Yahoo.com

I only do EMAIL via [what I believe is] a local EMAIL client,
Thunderbird. I think this is now "Eudora" of my past. "Eudora" does NOT
work locally any longer anyway.

I do not like to do EMAIL via WEB PORTAL's. This LIST has convinced me
of a variety of security-related reasons to believe what I now believe.

Am I still very "Old-School?"

Duncan

[H] XP Access (sharing?)

2010-07-12 Thread DSinc
I have rebuild an old machine. It now runs fine w/o BSODS. WinXP pro
SP3. Yes, it does have a [d:\SHARE] folder/directory.

Machine's XPpro seems to run just fine, otherwise.

This client (lib) will NOT let any other LAN client copy/move anything
into ITS' [SHARE] directory. Yet the directory is clearly SEEN from
other LAN clients (?).

I get access denied and read/write access business.
I localize this to some goof on this new client rebuild.
Am I incorrect?

I am willing to shut down the whole LAN ATM, and start again. Willing
to share internal info if necessary.

This client gets freely to the internet.
(~80 Winupdates prove this to me.)

The client clearly sees all other LAN clients.
The client gets to each 'other LAN' client's [SHARE] and freely moves
files {PULL only}.

All clients use the same ADMIN Uname and PW.
All clients have the same working desktops (ME and ADMIN).

What have I NOT done properly?

I am ready to erase and start over! It's only ~80 WinUpdates!
Unless... :)

Best,
Duncan

Disable Simple File sharing most likely.

To disable simple file sharing yourself, follow these steps:

   1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
   2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
   3. Click the View tab.
   4. In the Advanced Settings section, click to clear the Use simple file
sharing (Recommended) check box.

   5. Click OK.

Re: [H] XP Access (sharing?)-#2!!

2010-07-12 Thread DSinc

It seems I need to study "Permissions" more carefully.
My very bad.
Sorry. Forced something!

The client's [share] directory was reset to:
Full Control (checked)
Change (checked)
Read (checked)
and it worked just fine!

was:
Full Control (blank)
Change (blank)
Read (checked)

Still diddling around! Nevermind. I will come back and ask a cogent
question when my home makes sense to me again!

Scary to me, because all my other client [share] directories are:
Full Control (unchecked)
Change (unchecked)
Read (checked)

Duncan

Re: [H] XP Access (sharing?)

2010-07-12 Thread DSinc

Christopfer,
You may be correct. I think I did this already on my User DT. I'll go
check this again, AND, do it to my ADMIN DT also.

Yes, I may have blown past this one
I will go look at this again.
I do recall that [Simple File Sharing] was a no-no with several of my
UpStream apps.

Another check this evening will happen.
Thank you. Appreciate the reply.

I may have fixed this problem. Do not comprehend what/how I did it, however.

The remote (from my other client's] access to this 'new' LAN client's
[share] now seems to work FINE! I like this ATM.

I grumble because I am old and believed I used to understand this. It
appears that I still do not understand what I have done. I freely accept
that I may NEVER KNOW!...(or accept).. LOL! I so hate dealing with
MAGIC I just can not grasp! These machines are just so fast now. It is
a personal problem clearly! My BAD!

Thanks again!
Duncan

Then I must be 'old-school' too. I use Tbird to pull down email from 3
gmail accounts, 2 hotmail accounts, and, uh, yeah, one cox.net account.
The only problem I run into is that hotmail keeps threatening to delete
my accounts because I don't 'log-in'.

I don't think that's very old school...I'm writing this from a local program
(the Apple Mail.app on OSX). Local still has its strengths!

I did, however, stop using my ISP email address. That way when I change ISPs I
don't have to worry about changing my email address as well. Even though I have
a gmail address, I rarely login to the Gmail web interface.

Re: [H] Really simple email questions?

2010-07-12 Thread John R Steinbruner
I use a local email client exclusively at home too, but do use web-based email
when at work or traveling, etc.

As long as Ad-Block is on, it's bearable, and I have to admit, it's handy at
times :)

I have everything set to not delete except on my main Mac's local email client.

So once I access and download email from that 'puter, it does delete items
older than 24 hours from the email server..

Cheers..
