Not sure about actual data backups, but google mirrors their data around the globe. Multiple data centers would have to go down for them to lose your data. You might lose access to it if you are normally routed to a data center that goes down, but they can reroute you to another one in another country and still have your data there.

This is actually a reason that one of the better known colleges did not migrate to google apps, google wouldn't give them a list of countries their data would be stored, instead just a short list of countries it would NOT be stored.
