Just as way of an update, I bought two USB repeater cables from Newegg
at $10 each and had to use both, but I'm now up and running.  Webcam
resolution still sucks.  Additional note, I found that I had a bad
cable.  It'll work fine with a mouse, but won't work with a webcam.
Found that a little strange

IP cameras can be had for around $50 these days so you'd only need to run some 
cat5. Either than or go wireless camera (usually more money and less secure)

There are network cameras that are limited to 100 meters.
