Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?)
I found a supplier in TX IIRC that will send small orders as long as you don't mind paying shipping+h. Problem is, that also doubles the price. (But-OTOH, I moved 25 miles from my old place and I think it is a T-shirt store or something anyway now... Smallest order was (5) special caps for a MB... Rick Glazier - Original Message - From: DSinc Rick, That is pre-zactly what I have seen also. RShack is convenient. No argument. A good commercial electronics supplier that is local can be really tough. clipped

Rick, I have gotten used to the SH doubling the price. It is a cost to me to live in the sticks! LOL! ATM, I can handle it. I would suggest just getting a new router. --Original Message-- From: James Maki Sender: hardware-boun...@hardwaregroup.com To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com ReplyTo: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?) Sent: Aug 1, 2009 7:59 AM Hi all, Tonight I lost my internet connection and notice all the lights on my router were out. It has been really hot and the power adapter was hot. Can I safely assume (yes, I know the what happens when ...) it is the power supply, or must I worry that the unit itself is gone belly up? It is four years old. The replacement adapters are NOT readily available and I wonder if spending ~$30+ for an adapter that may or may not solve the problem is a wise investment. Any insight and/or suggestions? Thanks, Jim Maki jwm_maill...@comcast.net
Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?)
Most likely the adapter is hot because the router fried. If there is a short in the router, the demand for more current will make both get hot. A quick diagnostic would be to smell your router. If it smells burnt, it probably is. Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?)
James, I would first check the router's power brick output with a multimeter. Then, I would do a smell test at the router. If router smells burnt, probably toast and time for a replacement. I might try to dig up another power brick of SAME Voltage and connector polarity. I'd choose Amperage of same to + 500ma. If router comes back alive, old brick is bad. Replace. I use to get my replacements from Digi-Key. Otherwise, could be time to move up to the DGL-4500! (That is my next choice!) As a general rule, I often replace whatever brick comes with whatever with a better version of brick that has a separate grounded AC cord that plugs into the actual brick part. Yes, these commercial/industrial bricks can cost up to $50-$75, but all my replacements/retrofits are going on 10-15 years old and still running strong. Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?)
Duncan, Steve and Zulfiqar, Thanks for the replies. I cobbled together a cord running from the +5 volt of a power supply to the jack and the router came back to life! So the power brick had just given up the ghost. Will now have to find a replacement. Thanks for the input. P.S. I did do the sniff test and the router passed :0) Jim jwm_maill...@comcast.net James Maki wrote: Hi all, Tonight I lost my internet connection and notice all the lights on my router were out. If you can find a right amp and volt multi power adapter at radio shack then you can splice the connector from the original adapter. Otherwise you would have to shell out a lot for the original dlink adapter. --Original Message-- From: James Maki Sender: hardware-boun...@hardwaregroup.com To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com ReplyTo: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?) You will be able to find something under 10 bucks although you may have to go get the right plug from radio shack and solder it on but it is no big deal. This is one reason I never throw away my old adaptors.

Didn't know the shack was expensive for this kind of stuff. After all I am in KSA. ;-) --Original Message-- From: Winterlight Sender: hardware-boun...@hardwaregroup.com To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com ReplyTo: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?) I really need to 2d/Ditto this send! RadioShack has completely JUNK power adapters/Bricks. If you wish to have long time happiness, find a commercial Brick source. I always bought direct from an Electronics Distributor warehouse with counter type store service, and while RS used to have the better/best quality stuff, they were always exactly double on small parts... Re: [H] D-Link DGL-4300 power adapter died (?)
Rick, That is pre-zactly what I have seen also. RShack is convenient. No argument. A good commercial electronics supplier that is local can be really tough. I think I am lucky, finally! I now have a local Electronics Source I can use. I'm not overly crazy about their in-house choices of stuff, but, they will ORDER/Source whatever I ask for.. Certainly not like when I lived in SoCal. We live all over. One size (in this List) does NOT fit all! But, I do know that most List members will do whatever needs to be done within individual geographical limitations, based on suggestions of this List. Whatever!
