I got the driver, an Intel driver with a setup program that removes
the old driver, cleans up and then reinstalls the new driver. The
problem is that something is so screwed up that the new driver will
not install. The driver install will not load the driver wether I use
the setup program or do it manually.

i386 folder alone is not enough to do a reinstall of the OS AFAIK.

JRS was good enough to give me a DELL OEM CD so it looks like that will do it.

any hope of getting it, but I do see the i386 directory on the C
drive. Will that work? Just install from the hard drive with the
key and then online activation... or will I have to call and explain to MS?

I may have to take you up on that offer Chris.

Any dell restore media will work, as long as it has a dell BIOS.
If you want I can backchannel a copy of a restore disk if you need
one. I'm ok with doing that because it will refuse to install on a

Thanks Chris but I think I got this. Just removing the original user
cleared out a lot of cache and downloads that were appearing as
malware. Clamwin ID'd the viruses which allowed me to deal with them.
Then I ran every free scanner I could get until it appeared clean.I
got rid of all the Dell crapware and it is running pretty good now. I
think I will install COMODO free anti virus and firewall and she
should be good to go.

Has anyone ever tried COMODO free VPN software?

Go for the 1GB if cost is a barrier to full 2GB upgrade. Anything less than 1GB is
just not worth running, esp. on a laptop.

agreed but there isn't a disk, that I am aware of. Just the windows
restore with a hidden 5GB partition which I assume is the original image
file. I assume, I'm asking here, that I start up the windows dell
recovery and it it restores the original image file, which means when I
boot up it should ask me for user, registration and password
information, ... unless it takes that from the existing setup... does
anybody know?

Better would be replace original SODIMM for 2GB, the max.

yeah I saw that myself earlier but new DDR is just too damn expensive

Might be interested in that deal

Btw on the subject of laptops, does anyone know the best place to get
replacement batteries for these things (specifically Thinkpads)? The main
extended battery on my T42 is totally dead (I have a T61P too; just using
the T42 in the other room) and I wanted to get a replacement, but not spend
the full price $100 on it, unless that's my only option...thoughts?

You may want to check Dell's site too; I remember looking for possible
memory upgrades for my old P4 desktop and they had 1/2GB upgrade for like
$20-30 bucks (I decided it still wasn't worth it :P) on their accessories
site (and it looked up my service tag and found the exact right components
too btw). GL!

Re-install after wiping it out is best bet for a hassle free setup.

If it's a royalty licensed XP disc, the oembios will facilitate full
activated
install w/o doing an activation. How it will do the install is a function of
being a
"restore disc" or a Dell customized real OEM windows install. Assuming the
latter,
I'd slipstream the disc to SP3, install it, and then use a DVD w/
Autopatcher to do
the rest.

RAM I'd add a 1GB like this:

Better would be replace original SODIMM for 2GB, the max.
