Just install from the hard drive with the key and then online activation... or will I have to call and explain to MS? I may have to take you up on that offer Chris.

Christopher Fisk Thanks Chris but I think I got this. Just removing the original user cleared out a lot of cache and downloads that were appearing as malware. Clamwin ID'd the viruses which allowed me to deal with them. Then I ran every free scanner I could get until it appeared clean.I got rid of all the Dell crapware and it is running pretty good now. I think I will install COMODO free anti virus and firewall and she should be good to go. Has anyone ever tried COMODO free VPN software? m

Well it's a Dell, order replacement media from them would be my guess. There are other "ways" of getting what is legitimately supposed to be with the laptop. Go for the 1GB if cost is a barrier to full 2GB upgrade. Anything less than 1GB is just not worth running, esp. on a laptop. Just the windows restore with a hidden 5GB partition which I assume is the original image file. I assume, I'm asking here, that I start up the windows dell recovery and it it restores the original image file, which means when I boot up it should ask me for user, registration and password information, ... unless it takes that from the existing setup... does anybody know? Better would be replace original SODIMM for 2GB, the max. yeah I saw that myself earlier but new DDR is just too damn expensive right now, hell I just paid 22 bucks for 2GB of DDR2 for my Thinkpad,...which is why I inquired for used, and she doesn't really need it as much as it would just make things run smoother

You may want to check Dell's site too; I remember looking for possible memory upgrades for my old P4 desktop and they had 1/2GB upgrade for like $20-30 bucks (I decided it still wasn't worth it :P) on their accessories site (and it looked up my service tag and found the exact right components too btw).
