[H] Macbook
I just got myself a macbook. The 2 Ghz model with 512 MB of RAM. OSX is slow with just 512 MB of RAM, and I was curious if you need dual channel (2 sticks of RAM) to upgrade the system. I want to upgrade to a minimum of 1Gb, but I wanted to make sure if I can stick in one stick of 1 GB RAM. Also in the event that I have to use 2 sticks of RAM, can I just mix and match manufacturers? I have 1 stick of Corsair DDR2 667, and I can't find those anymore in Saudi. Can I just add another stick of 667 from PQI or Kingston with the Corsair? __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [H] Macbook Memory
I'm upgrading the memory in my wife's Macbook from the original 1GB. I wanted to go with 2x2GB but after looking on Newegg, Crucial, and Pricegrabber all I seem to be able to find is 1GB DIMMS. Also, does anyone have experience dropping normal PC DDR ram into a Macbook? Is there something weird about it that requires certain DIMMs? -- Brian Weeden

Just got mine too. Runs great. Agreed on the heat issue. Installed these from newegg: 20-221-043 NBM 1G|GIGA 200 GR2DS8BD-1GB667GI R You need exact pairs or it won't run dual channel. Otherwise, you can mix and match. Just make sure if you are using same sizes, they are identical modules (same fab, production date, etc.). Otherwise you will get system lockups - especially since the video uses system ram. On 6/3/06, Zulfiqar Naushad <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I just got myself a macbook. Re: [H] Macbook
Damn, I just bit the bullet and got myself 2 sticks of 1 GB PQI ddr 667 memory. Install was a breeze, and all I have to say is WOW!!! The improvement over stock is mind blowing. I did notice that be to the increase in RAM the Activity monitor shows less "usage". I also noticed a marked improvement in heat output. My macbook used to burn my nuts off, now it just lightly roasts them. But still, it's one damn hot machine. Can't use it on the lap for too long, it's more of a tabletop style machine. But all I have to reiterate is DAMN!! WOW!!! 2 GIG ram really shines in OSX! --- dex <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Just got mine too. Runs great. Agreed on the heat > issue. I would DEFINITELY agree with this. I just have a lowly 1.5ghz g4 AlBook, and I went from 512 to 1.5gb months ago. Difference is astonishing in terms of speed, responsiveness, everything.. Re: [H] Macbook Memory
The Macbook takes the same memory as a Intel/PC laptop. There's nothing special about it. Brian Weeden wrote: I'm upgrading the memory in my wife's Macbook from the original 1GB. Re: [H] Macbook Memory
AFAIK the macbook may not support 4GB? Or was that the Mac Mini. Either way, Macbook memory = standard PC memory. Just get a corsair valueselect (like I did) and do the uprgrade yourself. It's pretty idiot proof and trust me you'll feel a huge difference from 1 gb to 2 or 4 gb!
Re: [H] Macbook Memory
Figured it out. Macbooks only support a max of 2GB while the Macbook Pros support up to 4 GB Intel chipset they are using but it does seem weird to me that a Core 2 Duo chipset can't handle 4 GB running a 64 bit OS. Maybe that's one of the reasons they justify the Pro. I ordered a couple of 1 GB DIMMs from Corsair for $50. Even with $20 in shipping and duty to Canada it was still better than getting the same thing from TigerDirect (or Apple) for $100. My Inspiron E1505, which is a Core2 Duo, only supports a max of 2GB of RAM. Brian Weeden wrote: Figured it out. [H] Macbook locks up NAT router
Same router I had before - Netgear WGR614 v3 - running fine with 3 Windows XP machines connecting, 2 wired and 2 wireless. Replaced the two wireless machines with a new Macbook. Connects and gets an IP just fine, but with 20 minutes (sometimes 5) the router locks up hard. Activity lights continue to flash but router config page (192.168.0.1) is inaccessible and none of the machines can access the net. Only solution is to do a hard reset of the router which makes it fine for another short while. Googling turns up a whole bunch of people with similar problems with various models of routers but no answers other than the obvious update your firmware: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50591 http://forums.macnn.com/92/networking/325172/d-link-wbr-1310-router-constantly/ http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1286336&page=1 http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-239977.html Anyone else experiencing something similar? I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about networking and can't figure out what the heck could be going on. I am considering pulling out Ethereal to do a packet analysis to see what is going on. Thoughts? -- Brian

Re: [H] Macbook locks up NAT router
I use mine for work so it's seen a lot of different networks. The only problem I've had is at a friends, which locked. I just figured it was his piece of junk. Not sure if it was a Netgear. Most of the wireless nets I connect to are Linksys. -Original Message- From: "Brian Weeden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 17:44:50 To:hwg Subject: [H] Macbook locks up NAT router Same router I had before - Netgear WGR614 v3 - running fine with 3 Windows XP machines connecting, 2 wired and 2 wireless. Hopefully the problem will resolve itself soon - I have one of the new Airport Extremes on order and it should be here in a week or so. Mainly for the draft-N capabilities but also to help fix the lock-up problem and make it easier to enable some of the Apple programs. Things like iChat require a TON of ports to be mapped on a non-Apple router. -- Brian

All the Core2Duo Macs can be firmware upgraded to 802.11N. Apple just released the patch a couple days ago: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/09/update-your-wireless-to-802-11n/ Patch is free if you buy the new router, $2 to download from Apple's site. Re: [H] Macbook locks up NAT router
Supposedly it is related to the Sarbanes-Oxley law passed to help prevent future Enrons. Under SOX, a company cannot claim profits from something before they sell it. Apple sold the devices, counted them as profits, then is enabling more features later on. It is splitting hairs but given how much attention is being put on corporate finances I probably would have done the same thing if I was a lawyer. Besides, it's $2. Re: [H] Macbook locks up NAT router
The argument is that they cheated by claiming the profits from the sale of the devices months ago and didn't actually deliver the capability until now. Granted, that is pretty weak but it is similar to what Enron was doing (claiming profits on deals months or years before they actually were supposed to return money) that noone wants to get the SEC pissed off again.
